Student passion expressed through resurrection paintings

The paintings done in Bison Square during resurrection week are a Lipscomb tradition, but for senior Shelby Smith there is more to enjoy than just the paintings. The tradition began during her freshman year when she didn’t even think she was supposed to be involved. “I actually thought they had the wrong person when Jake [Burton] asked me to do it,” Smith said. “I was like, ‘I’m not an art major. My last name’s Smith. You may have the wrong person.’ I was a freshman so I was second guessing everything.” Smith said she quickly realized that she loved doing the paintings — so much that she has done it each year. One of Smith’s favorite parts of participating is getting to interact with the student body in the square. “I paint once a year, for this,” Smith said. “When I’m out in the square people start talking to me, which is one of my favorite parts, which is funny because I’m an introvert, but I like getting to see all the people I know and meet new people who just come up and say nice things.” Four painters, including Smith,  gather in the square at Lipscomb each year during the week of Easter to paint what this time means to them. Campus Ministry chose the 2015 theme to be “Journey to the Cross.”  “The theme has something to do with [the paintings] every year,” Smith said. Smith said that in past years, she, along with campus ministry, have normally chosen artists just from people they knew, but this year they widened the search. “This has been the easiest year, because as I’ve come back to...

Men’s and women’s tennis fall short in opening conference matches

While most Lipscomb students were on spring break, the men’s and women’s tennis teams were hard at work starting Atlantic Sun Conference play. The men’s tennis team started off their spring break with a strong 6-1 win over the University of North Alabama on March 18 at home. The Bisons won two of the three doubles matches to get the winning point, and in singles action, the Bisons dominated. Sophomore Rob Mitchell, freshman Alejandro Manzanares, freshman Philippe Courteau, junior John Tougher and freshman Thais Minet all won their singles matches outright. Following the dominating performance over North Alabama, the Bisons looked to take the momentum into their first conference match against the University of North Florida on March 19. However, the men fell short in their first conference outing. The men lost 4-1 with the only singles victory coming from Mitchell, and the team did not win a doubles point. While the men were busy with their week, the women’s team was just as hard at work. The women started off the week on March 17 against Western Kentucky hoping to get a win before conference play, but the team fell short, losing 4-3. The Lady Bisons hoped to make a quick turnaround from the loss when they also took on UNF at home on March 19, but they fell 4-0 to the Ospreys. Freshman Hannah Gamage and junior Danielle Kinnen won the only point for the Lady Bisons. The duo won their doubles match 8-0, and the Lady Bisons did not win a singles point. Both the men and women are back in action on Saturday, March 21. The women travel to...

Track and Field to open outdoor season with first ever home meet

The Lipscomb track and field team has anticipated hosting Belmont in a home meet for some time, and now it finally gets to do this Friday as the outdoor season kicks off. The track and field Battle of the Boulevard is historic for the Bisons because it is the first home meet the team has ever hosted. “I think it’s a good idea that we have a home meet, and I’m kind of excited, being a senior, that it is the first home meet that we have ever hosted,” senior sprinter Kenny Smith said. Even though running at home is exciting for the team, they said there are still a few factors they feel uneasy about. Smith said that the team’s motivation could be higher. “It’s hard [to get motivated] because some people aren’t taking it as seriously as it should be taken, like a normal, big track meet,” Smith said. “We’re not really looking at this meet as a meet, we’re looking more to it as practice, which is never good going into a meet — thinking of it as practice when you should be thinking of it as a meet — as competition.” Regardless of the team’s degree of motivation toward the meet, the team is excited since it is the first outdoor meet of the season. At the end of the indoor season, the Bisons showed some success. Sophomore Wayne Newman set the Lipscomb and Atlantic Sun record for the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.95 seconds, and Madi Talbert, Sally Larson, Barbara Lee Ball and Paige Stoner dominated the 5000m. “I think we ended on a...

Baseball sweeps La Salle in a powerful offensive weekend

The Bisons baseball team finished out a three-game sweep of La Salle with a 7-5 victory Sunday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L Marsh Stadium. In the final matchup between the two, the Bisons took a 3-0 lead in the first inning before clinching the 7-5 win, and continued to score throughout the game. The Bisons produced at the plate all weekend even with different lineups. The series opener took place Friday afternoon, when the Bisons took the 8-2 win. In the game, redshirt freshman Allan Hooker took advantage of his first start of his college career. Hooker finished with three RBI’s and a two-run home run in his first career at-bat. The Bisons finished the day with 12 hits. Senior Ian Martinez-McGraw came away with the win. On day two of the weekend, Lipscomb pounded La Salle with a 13-5 victory. Hooker had another stand-out day for the Bisons as he led the team with four RBI’s and went 3-for-3. The Explorers jumped on the Bisons with a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but Lipscomb responded in the fourth inning, and never looked back. Head coach Jeff Forehand said that he is most proud of the fact that his players are having quality at-bats. Freshman Michael Gigliotti finished the day 4-for-6 and junior Chucky Vazquez finished 2-for-5. Senior pitcher Nick Andros started the game for the Bisons and pitched 4.2 innings. Transfer Kyle Weller came in relief and finished the last 4.1 innings. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Bethune made his first appearance of the season for the Bisons during Sunday’s final matchup. Bethune, finished the day 2-for-3 and was the...

Molly Spitznagle shares hand lettering art with Lipscomb, Nashville

What started out as a fun team bonding activity has turned into a small hand lettering art business for junior volleyball player Molly Spitznagle. “This summer we as a volleyball team had a lot of off time, and we all are here in the summer, so we had this thing called art club,” Spitznagle said. “We would do it and Jewell Dobson and I just kind of stuck to it.” Spitznagle credited senior Jewell Dobson for helping her get started in hand lettering. Once she got her start over the summer, she kept at it, and now does different kinds of lettering on canvases. “A lot of them are like Bible verses or quotes or sayings. I’ve done some name canvases for rooms or something like that, but they’re mostly lettering quotes.” The initial idea didn’t involve making any money, but it slowly turned in to a fundraising outlet to raise money for her yearly mission trip to Honduras. “I wanted to find a way that I could fundraise for myself, and I really enjoy art and painting and lettering and stuff like that, so I thought that I could make money off of canvases,” Spitznagle said. “It’s really popular right now, so it’s kind of expanded from there and blown up.” Now that Spitznagle has raised enough money for her mission trip, she has other plans for the canvases. As an athlete, it is hard for her to find time for a job to make spending money, so she decided to share her talents with the public. “I’ve just kind of tried to make it into a little side...
