The dedication of Smith Stadium had the Lipscomb softball team hitting their stride, winning three in a row this weekend against the Mercer Bears at Draper Diamond. The softball stadium was officially dedicated to Michael Smith and his son Derek Smith, who are owners of Rio Grande Fence Company. The Smiths are heavily active in the softball program, giving the university one of the best fields in the Atlantic Sun Conference, if not nationally. The field was dedicated to the Smiths after the 9-1 blowout win against Mercer on Saturday afternoon, and right before the 5-4 win that took eight innings to get it done. Their streak continued on Sunday when they hosted Mercer for the third and final game, and after trailing 1-0, they forced extra innings yet again and senior infielder Kelsey Cartwright drove in the winning run. “Well, yesterday, [Mercer’s pitcher] was jamming me a lot, so I was expecting more in, but the pitch before was out,” Cartwright said. “Thankfully, Paige [Neely] got on to even give me the opportunity, but they came back again with the outside, and I was able to luckily get a hit up the middle.” Neey, the junior infielder who scored the winning run, also contributed heavily on both sides of the ball all weekend for the team. She said both sides were needed in each win. “Their team definitely kept us motivated, Neely said. “They were scratching and clawing, and we just had a motivation to not let them win and that went from defense to offense.” The weekend sweep puts the Lady Bisons at 34-9 overall and 14-6...

March Madness may be over, but because of Ty Osman II, the ball has not stopped bouncing just yet. March 2013 marked the first of what will now be the annual Ty Osman II 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament, and the time has come around again to host the second annual games. This is an event to honor a young man who lost his life in a car accident in 2012. Ty Osman II is a former Harding student and member of Woodmont Hills Church of Christ, and to honor Ty and his family, Woodmont has invited everyone, both students and adults, to gather in fun competition on Saturday, April 12, in Allen Arena starting at 8 a.m. Ty’s father, Ty Osman, expressed his appreciation for the event. “It’s really an honor to us,” Ty Osman said. “We didn’t put it together, but someone put it together for us because they knew he loved basketball.” The event is free of charge, and all the donations will go to benefit Donate Life Tennessee. Several lives have been impacted since the passing of Osman, as he was an organ donor, and seven people are now using his organs. To encourage others to become donors, the Ty2 Foundation is hosting this second annual tournament to help the legacy of Ty live on. The battle is on at Dugan Field this weekend as the Bison baseball team prepares for a rivalry game against the Bears of Mercer University. The Bison’s enter the weekend 10-2 in the conference which matches the Bears’ conference record of 10-2. The first place battle begins on Friday night at 6 p.m. and continues again on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Dugan Field. Bisons head coach Jeff Forehand is excited about the opportunity for his team, and says he wants this series to have record attendance. “Home is one thing, but having a crowd and support behind you is another,” Forehand said about the big weekend ahead. “We have good crowds most of the games, but this is one I just thought we could have a chance to break the record, get some people out there,” Forehand said. “It’s supposed to be a nice weekend, so [we’re] just challenging all the students to wherever they’re going to be, bring whatever you’re doing and bring it out to the field.” Mercer has been a well-coached team for several years now and is constantly flirting with the Top 25 polls. The Bisons, on the other hand, are 19-4 in their last 23 games, and Forehand says the practices this week have been the most intense that they have had all year. Fill your bellies with laughter Wednesday night as Lipscomb’s theatre department puts on their student-led improv show at 6:30 in the University Theatre. For those who don’t know what improv is, performer Nelson Tilley described it similar to the hit TV show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” The troupe calls themselves “Self Improvment.” The other student leaders are Casey Edwards and Austin Hunt, and they are joined by Tilley. Majority of the performers in the group are in the theatre department, but they do have a few performers who are not. “The show is free first off; who doesn’t love free stuff?” Tilley said about Wednesday’s performance. They do take donations at the door, and all the money goes to charities around the community. The show is full of clean humor, and Tilley said he welcomes all students, faculty and staff to come by and watch the performances as they put on a family-friendly show. “We’re just a student-led group trying to spread some happiness by making people laugh and just enjoy their days,” Tilley said. “Come with ideas and come be entertained.” For those who are unable to attend tonight’s performance, Tilley said they will be doing another show on Thursday, April...

“Roll With Me” evens out the Singarama playing field after its win of the Staging Category Award at the Saturday matinee of Singarama’s On Fire. The “Drop” group won the Theme Category Award on Thursday, and the “Stop” group won the Music Category Award after Friday night’s performance. Alex Shumate, the director of the “Roll” group, thought this win was much needed. “It feels really good,” Shumate said after the win. “We’ve worked really hard, and we feel like we have a great show, and we feel like we’ve been waiting for a win, so it felt really good to get one. “I feel really good and really confident in our show, and I feel like we have a lot of things going for us.” The grand finale of the 51st annual Singarama takes place Saturday in Collins Alumni Auditorium at 7:30.
