Lipscomb students get excited for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

Students have shown a great force of excitement as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” approaches its opening day. During Star Wars week, Lipscomb has had everything from Star Wars-themed shirts in the bookstore to a spray-painted Star Wars Bison. Although many claimed the Star Wars story ended with “Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi,” George Lucas sold Lucasfilm Ltd. to The Walt Disney Company, which then proceded with production on the new film in 2013, and a huge casting call that followed. “I’m excited to see if Disney royally messes it up or not,” junior Carson Lassiter said. “I’m excited to see what they do with the villains and the Empire.” Junior Caleb Finley said he was also excited to see where other characters end up. “I’m most excited to see the character development within Han Solo and Princess Leia,” Finley said. “[I’m also excited to] find out the mystery behind where Luke Skywalker ended up.” Speculation is amongst other students as well. For many, it’s part of the fun — guessing what’s going to happen within the story of the new movie. “I hate to ruin this, but Luke is going to be the villain,” junior Phillip Moore said. “Also, no Jar Jar.” Lucas’ Gungan character Jar Jar Binks is mostly despised amongst the fanbase, and the hate for him is voiced on campus as well. A theory by Reddit user Lumpawarroo popped up amongst the Star Wars community. It’s a very detailed theory that supports the idea of Jar Jar Binks being an evil Sith collaborator. Finley said he’s seen the theory. “We obviously already...

Student uses theatre to connect with local actors, professionals

For senior Andrew Johnson theatre is more about connecting with others and expression of technique rather than just being in the spotlight. Johnson transferred from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville during the second semester of his freshman year and will graduate from Lipscomb this December with a BFA in Theatre Acting. Entering the Lipscomb Department of Theatre presented opportunities for him to cultivate his acting skills as well as make many connections. “Considering I brought nothing to the table to start, being surrounded by a lot of really, really good contacts has been good for me,” Johnson said. “Just getting to do shows has been huge, including the push to go do stuff outside of the department.” One of those contacts is Steve Feldman, who worked on Sesame Street for several years. Several other contacts are fellow students, whom Johnson has spent countless afternoons with, hanging out in the University Theatre on campus, working on shows or performing with the group “Self-IMPROVment.” Johnson became president of the improv troupe in May 2015 after the former president, Austin Hunt, graduated. Johnson has been a part of the group for about a year and believes it to be a “stress reliever.” Junior Nelson Tilley, a member of Self-IMPROVment, said he believes Johnson to be a good leader. “Andrew is a wonderful person to work with,” Tilley said. “He really emphasizes ‘Hey we’re a group; we’re a team.’” Johnson has also performed in several plays, both in the department and with Nashville theaters. Most recently, he portrayed a “tragedian” for the Nashville Repertory Theatre’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. The show proved to be difficult with his schedule and...
‘Star Wars’ trivia night brings fans to The Well

‘Star Wars’ trivia night brings fans to The Well

Proud Star Wars fan and junior software engineering major Charles Humphreys took home a box-set of all six Star Wars movies Monday night after a trivia game held at The Well Coffeehouse. “When it comes to the questions, I’m kind of like a straight-up, hard core fan, and they’re not really difficult,” Humphreys said. The Student Activities Board organized the event in celebration of the upcoming movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. “A big reason we did it was to do a big kick-off party for our ticket sales,” student activities director Louis Nelms said. Lipscomb’s SAB bought 510 tickets for the anticipated blockbuster, and Nelms believed that trivia night at The Well would encourage buyers. “We like to do it over at The Well because it allows us to include one of our neighbors in our community,” Nelms said. “Sometimes students want to get off campus, and this is an easy spot to do it.” Students set up a table with Star Wars shirts, mugs and other memorabilia for consolation prizes. What really brought students in was the grand prize — a box set of all six movies. The game proceeded with Nelms asking questions over a speaker system. Students would write down their name, the points they were betting and their answers on sticky notes to hand in. Some of the categories were “Names,” “Quotes” and “Droids.” The student with the most points at the end of the game won. Nelms began with simple questions such as “What planet are Wookies from?” Other questions were more difficult for students, including “What was the name of the only rebel pilot...

Padrino’s Pops provides tasty treats for passers-by

The Lipscomb community gets a new icy treat next door with Padrino’s Pops. The new paletas shop opened next to the Copper Kettle on Granny White Pike in March. “My family made Popsicles 25 years ago,” said Lorena Cantu, owner of the shop. “We want to make something fresh here in Tennessee.” Cantu wishes to follow her father Geronimo, who started making paletas, also known as Popsicles, in 1978. By following his footsteps, Cantu creates paletas made with fresh fruit daily. There are several choices to choose from once you walk into the colorful store. There’s two different types of paletas, cream or water based. A chalkboard menu is hung on the right wall and lists all the flavors that are available, from strawberries and cream, banana and even cucumber. Another specialty Padrino’s Pops provides is the Agua Fresca, a water and fruit drink that’s heavily popular in Mexico. “It’s like a smoothie without all the heavy cream,” said Lipscomb student Virginia Lodholz, who tried a sample of Piña Colada Agua Fresca. “It’s refreshing.” Cantu wishes to expand the love of the paletas and Agua Frescas. “We want to cater, and we want to open franchises,” Cantu said. “This is our first one, but we want to open more popsicles in Nashville and in other cities.” Visit their website for more...
