Softball takes one of three from Stetson in weekend series

The Lipscomb softball team won one of three games in this weekend’s series against Stetson at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium.  The Lady Bisons took game one of the series Saturday 10-3. Stetson scored three runs in the first inning, but Lipscomb responded with four runs. Junior infielder Baylee Williams hit a sacrifice fly to score junior outfielder Brittany Elmore for Lipscomb’s first run of the game. Freshman catcher Abby Fenichel hit a double to score Lipscomb’s third and fourth runs in the first inning. Senior outfielder Brianne Welch led off the sixth inning with a solo home run. Senior outfielder Gracey Aguirre hit a two-run home run with two outs in the sixth to round out the Lady Bison’s scoring in game one. Senior infielder Paige Neely had three hits and two RBIs. Junior Kelly Young pitched seven innings, giving up just four hits with 10 strikeouts. Stetson took game two on Saturday 4-0. Lipscomb only managed to get three hits from Neely, Fenichel and sophomore infielder Mimi Cartwright. Stetson scored all four runs in the third, including a home run from Demi Meza. Junior Tanner Sanders pitched seven innings, giving up six hits with five strikeouts. Stetson took the series in game three on Sunday 6-3 in eight innings. The Lady Bisons scored one run in the first and second inning. Young took a no-hitter into the sixth. Stetson rallied late in the sixth inning, starting with a solo home run from Brittany Hawn. Another home run from Stetson’s Amanda Grimaldo in the seventh pushed the Hatters ahead 3-2. Lipscomb responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore Becca Dean scored...

Bison hoops defeat Northern Kentucky in A-Sun quarterfinals

The Lipscomb men’s basketball team is heading to the 2015 Atlantic Sun Conference semifinals after defeating Northern Kentucky 76-73 in overtime at the quarterfinals Tuesday night in Regents Hall. The Bisons led by three points in the last 14 seconds left in regulation with a chance to make the lead five at the free throw line. Both free throws were missed, but Northern Kentucky’s Tyler White hit a three to tie the game at 68, sending the game into overtime. White hit another three in overtime to put the Norse up 73-70. The Bisons responded with two free throws from sophomore guard J.C. Hampton and graduate student Chad Land, as well as a jumper from sophomore guard Josh Williams to seal the win. Senior forward Martin Smith led the way for the Bisons with 13 points. Williams added 12 points. Northern Kentucky finished with the overall record of 13-17. Lipscomb improved to 14-16. Lady Bisons earn first conference win of the season

The Lady Bisons earned their first conference win over Kennesaw State 79-61 Saturday in Allen Arena. Junior Ashley Southern posted a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Danay Fothergill followed with 18 points. Sophomore Chandler Cooper added 16 points. Lipscomb led 35-26 at halftime and never looked back. The Lady Bisons maintained the lead the entire second half. Southern scored 16 of her 26 in the second half. The Lady Bisons created 17 points off of Kennesaw State turnovers. The coaches were very pleased with how Lipscomb responded to the game plan put into place. “We put in the game plan to get the ball to Ashley [Southern] in the paint,” assistant coach Courtney Locke said. “Our girls did a great job of executing that game plan, as well as the game plan on the defensive end.” Kennesaw State’s Deandrea Sawyers scored 24 and grabbed nine rebounds. Kennesaw State fell to 13-5 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic Sun. Lipscomb improved to 6-11 overall and 1-2 in the A-Sun. Bisons lose 72-60 to Missouri

Freshman guard Nathan Moran scored 17 points in the Bison’s 72-60 loss to Missouri this Saturday in Allen Arena.  Sophomore guard Josh Williams added 11 points and seven rebounds. Lipscomb led 35-33 at halftime.  The Bisons were unable to hit a basket in the final 9:33 of the game. Missouri’s Johnat Williams III scored 16, while Keith Shamburger added 15. Missouri’s record improved to 6-7 overall. This loss was the first the men’s basketball team in 2015. Lipscomb’s record fell to 5-9 overall. Williams leads the way in Bisons’ defeat over Austin Peay

The Bisons defeated Austin Peay 69-63 during the last game before their winter break Sunday night in Allen Arena. Sophomore guard Josh Williams led the way for the Bisons, scoring 21 points. Three other players put up double digits, including sophomore forward Brett Wishon with 14, senior forward Malcolm Smith with 11 and freshman guard Nathan Moran with 10. Austin Peay’s Chris Freeman scored 15, and Chris Horton scored 13 points. Austin Peay dropped to 4-8.
