GLUTEN-FREE FRIDAY: Where to find the best gluten-free doughnuts in Nashville

GLUTEN-FREE FRIDAY: Where to find the best gluten-free doughnuts in Nashville

12 South’s Five Daughters Bakery gets my vote for the best gluten-free doughnut in Nashville. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention their glorious Paleo Crusher doughnuts in a Gluten-Free Friday post. These are the things of legend, basically, and I love them very deeply. There are many wonderful things about Five Daughters: The convenience of their 12 South location, the quality of local non-GMO (genetically-modified) ingredients used in all of their products, and the fact that it’s family-oriented. For us gluten-free folks, arguably the best part is that they craft DELICIOUS paleo doughnuts. Yes, craft. These are no ordinary doughnuts. They’re not even ordinary gluten-free doughnuts. They are also grain-free, dairy-free, and refined sugar-free, making them significantly lower in carbohydrates than most doughnuts, and, as a result, much less guilt-inducing. And, perhaps most importantly, they taste great. Let’s be real: gluten-free baked goods have come a long way. Sadly, there are still the occasional “flops” like sweetener-less, grain-free blueberry muffins or gluten-free cupcakes that don’t quite taste like anything. Praise God for Five Daughters Bakery, a company that gets gluten, grain-free and paleo baked goods right! Five Daughter’s Paleo Crusher doughnuts are moist, flavorful and perfectly sweet. The Paleo diet, inspired by the supposed diet of cavemen, doesn’t allow any gluten or grains. As a result, people on paleo diets often bake with nut flours, like almond flour, starch flours or tapioca flour, in place of typical gluten-free grain blends. Five Daughters’ Paleo Crushers use a blend of almond, tapioca and coconut flour in the base of their paleo vanilla doughnuts. For sweeteners, Five Daughters uses honey and maple syrup...

Family Weekend tips and tricks

There are already a record number of people on campus, and this weekend there will be several more. With Family Weekend here the same time as Cowboy Show, we have some tips for those coming in to visit. Parking: When you find a place, take it. No need to try and find a better one. On Lipscomb’s campus, an open spot, is the best spot. Food: Don’t be afraid to eat on campus. We have sushi, Chick-fil-A, Blue Coast Burrito and the cafeteria. Plus, The parents will be a meal a day this weekend. However, if you want to venture off campus, there are several options such as Carraba’s, Cheesecake Factory, Pei Wei, Athens, Burger Up and a lot more other places right in Green Hills. Traffic: Prepare for delays, trust me. Hillsboro road is one of the worst roads in America – and I am not joking. Traffic is terrible in Green Hills, but once you get where you are going, it’s totally worth it. We hope this helps, and if it doesn’t maybe this week’s Nashville Spotlight can help you out. Please upgrade your...
Burger Up Review

Burger Up Review

Want to try a new restaurant that isn’t too far from campus? Look no further than a mile down 12th Avenue  and you’ll find Burger Up. Now, don’t get me wrong, burger places like Five Guys and Cheeseburger Charley’s are good, but sometimes it’s nice to switch it up and try something different. Burger Up is more than a big hunk of beef, though. The trendy restaurant also has something for the health conscious out there too, offering up turkey burgers and black bean burgers. One of the most enjoyable aspects of Burger Up is the homey atmosphere and friendly servers. You don’t feel out of place and uptight like you might would at some “classy” restaurants. This modern-rustic restaurant with exposed brick and wood cladding is the perfect setting for a date, business lunch or family dinner. The servers at Burger Up interested me because they all put off an artistic vibe and were rocking the “hipster” look. Most of them wore deep v-necks and skinny jeans, including my waitress, Natalie Bryd. “I moved from Alabama to Tennessee to pursue the music thing,” Bryd said. “Most people think we are all trying to be hipsters, but 80 percent of us that work here are musicians.” Now, let’s get to what really matters — the food. Even though Bryd has worked at Burger Up for 2 ½ years and suggested The Woodstock, the most popular burger, I ordered The Marathon with truffle fries. The Marathon is a quinoa and black bean burger topped with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and cilantro lime crème fraiche. The truffle fries are tossed in mushroom...
