Who would be on the Mount Rushmore of Lipscomb Sports Figures?

In the past few months, there was a craze among media outlets and just people in general to make a “Mount Rushmore” of everything, whether sport, entertainment, profession or just about anything else you could think of. The premise is fairly simple; you just have to come up with the four most prominent figures of the group of your choosing for a so-called Mount Rushmore of (fill in the blank). Lumination even took a stab at it with a Mount Rushmore of Lipscomb Professors. Inspired by all the discussions of ranking current and historical notable figures, something I love to do, I decided to make a Mount Rushmore of Lipscomb Sports Figures. There are a few rules I came up with to help narrow down the field of nominees: 1. No current athletes can make the final list of four people. Despite the great success of our current athletes, it would not be fair to include a player whose Lipscomb career is ongoing. 2. Current coaches are eligible for the list, but only if they have coached for five or more seasons. 3. Only one coach or athlete from a single sport is allowed on the final list of four. Otherwise, you could have a single sport taking up half of the spots. Now, on to the list. The first spot should be obvious. Don Meyer: Basketball coach, 1975-1999 The late, great Coach Don Meyer was not only one of the pillars of college sports at Lipscomb, but he was also integral to the college basketball community throughout the country. Meyer’s team went 11-19 during his first season with...

[Video] Former Bison Adnan Hodzic encourages peers to follow Christ

Adnan Hodzić, former Lipscomb basketball star, graduated last May and went on to extend his basketball career in Germany. He returned to his alma mater to give his spiritual testimonial about how exactly Jesus Christ changed his life forever. After the testimonial, Lumination Network sat down with Hodzić who has changed so much in seven short months, not just physically but spiritually. Please upgrade your browser Hodzic plays professionally for the German BBL club Walter Tigers Tübingen and was given a week off during the league’s All-Star Day break. “I learned this year to really lean on the Lord,” Hodzic told LipscombSports.com. “He blessed me. I’m a firm believer in Christ. I see him working in my life. I give all the glory to him, man, because he’s helped me and without him I don’t know where I would be now going through all the struggles that I did at the beginning of the season.” When asked about his plans for the future, Hodzic offered only one specific goal. “My goal is to just keep following the path that God wants me to be on,” Hodzic said. “I don’t really think much outside of that because when you start looking at that kind of stuff it can add stress to you. … For me, I’m just looking at this season playing as hard as I can and then the offers will come next season.” “And where God takes me, he takes me,” Hodzic continued. “I figured that that way is the most stress-free, most enjoyable way to play the game instead of thinking, ‘I gotta put on a performance....

Lipscomb overcomes 18-point deficit, beats Belmont 73-64

Respect, bragging rights, an undefeated record and an entire boulevard were at stake on Tuesday night when the Battle of the Boulevard went down inside Allen Arena. Coming off of a big win against USC Upstate, the Bisons had all the confidence in the world that they would be able to improve since the last time they faced the Bruins. The Bisons lost that game 88-52 less than two weeks ago. With the deck stacked against them coming into the game and for much of the first half, the Bisons were able to rally from an 18-point deficit with 24 minutes left in the game. “For the first 16 minutes, we were not very good,” Coach Scott Sanderson said. “We didn’t do anything we wanted to do offensively and defensively. I was extremely aggravated at our players.” In the last four minutes of the first half, the Bisons started their run. Trailing 38-20, the Bisons cut it to 40-31 with an 11-2 run that re-energized not only the team but the fans as well. Luckily for Sanderson, the Bisons did not stop their scoring when the half ended. The Bisons came out red-hot and outscored their cross-town rivals 42-24. “To come back from an 18-point deficit says even more about the resiliency of our players,” Sanderson said. “But it is one game with nine more games to go. We have 32 days to keep getting better until March gets here.” After the game at Belmont earlier this month, some questioned if Lipscomb center Adnan Hodzic was outmatched by Belmont big men Mick Hedgepeth and Scott Saunders. The Bosnian native...

Bisons win thriller in OT versus Austin Peay

No one knew for sure when the game would end. However, when it finally did, the Bisons were victorious. In the 67th meeting between the two teams, the Bisons were able to squeeze out a 104-101 victory against Austin Peay State University. It did not come easily, though. The game was tied 11 different times, and the largest lead by any team was nine points. That lead was part of an early first-half run by the Bisons. The largest APSU lead was seven. The Governors held a steady lead for most of the second half with a few ties here and there, but the Bisons could never get on top and steal the momentum away from them. That all changed when APSU missed two consecutive free throws with under seven seconds left, followed by senior Josh Slater taking the ball from one end of the court to the other for a game-tying layup. The score at the end of regulation was 87-87. Those 87 points were the most allowed by Lipscomb this season, and Coach Scott Sanderson let his players know that. “Obviously we needed to get a stop,” senior center Adnan Hodzic said. “They are a great team with great forwards that can penetrate, and we just had to get one stop and the game was ours.” The Bisons got that stop. An early miss by Austin Peay let the Bisons take an early lead when Hodzic scored the first points of overtime. Hodzic went on to score six more in OT to lead the Bisons to the win. “I am just playing my role,” Hodzic said. “I have told...
