The Lipscomb men’s tennis team beat Ball State 4-3 Saturday evening while the women’s tennis team lost to Columbus State 5-2. Despite cancellations and freezing temperatures, both the men and women pushed hard and played their game indoors. The men’s team came from behind to get its win against Ball State. The Bisons’ top seed, freshman Rob Mitchell, took a 6-1 and 7-5 win at the beginning of singles. The three spot, freshman Philippe Courteau won 6-4 and 7-5. A big win for the Bisons came from sophomore John Tougher. Tougher won in three sets, 6-3, 3-6 and 6-3. In the women’s match, Columbus started by taking the doubles point against Lipscomb. Junior Danielle Kinnen and freshmen Hannah Gamage were able to win one point in the doubles matches out of three. The singles matches were up and down for each team, but two of the Lipscomb ladies were able to pull out a win. Sophomore Laura Kent secured Lipscomb’s first singles point by winning two quick-paced sets in a row, 6-3 and 6-2. Senior Jenny Borck also played an aggressive singles match that landed with a win 6-3, 4-6 and 10-6. “I started off slow, but I ended up holding it together and coming back both times and pushing through on the ten-point tiebreak,” Borck said. Borck played against a quick-paced competitor that led both the sets, but she was able to come back and take the point. “She was a really good matchup for me because I am really consistent and she is also really consistent,” Borck said. “She likes to mix up her shots and so do I....

The fall sports teams are off to a great start this semester. Here is a recap on the games that have already been completed so far. Volleyball The Lipscomb volleyball team opened up the 2014 season with a 2-1 record at the Kansas Invitational. Friday Aug. 29 started with a disappointing season opener, losing 3-1 to No. 23 Creighton. Junior Brittany Estes recored her first career triple double in the match with 12 kills, 12 digs and 10 assists. Junior Bri McCombs led Lipscomb with 19 digs. Senior Lauren Ford added 18 digs. The big win came later that night against No. 22 Kansas. The Lady Bisons were down 2-0, but rallied back winning three sets in a row to get the 3-2 victory. The win was the first for the program over a ranked opponent. Lipscomb took set three 25-14, set four 26-24 and set five 15-12. Senior Jewell Dobson had a match-high 20 kills. Estes notched a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. McCombs recorded a match-high 20 digs. Coach Brandon Rosenthal earned his 200th win after the Lady Bisons defeated Utah Valley 3-1 on Aug. 30. Lipscomb won the first set 25-23, third set 25-17 and fourth set 25-15. Estes had 10 kills in the match, and earned a spot on the All-Tournament team for the invitational. Ford recorded a match high 15 kills. McCombs led the team with 14 digs. Junior Molly Spitznagle’s hitting percentage was .562 in the match with 10 kills. Neither rain, wind nor cold weather can keep the Bisons from competing and succeeding. The Lipscomb Track & Field team competed in the two day Vanderbilt meet this past weekend. Vanderbilt, The Ohio State, Belmont, Austin Peay and Alabama A&M all took part in the meet. “This was the best meet we’ve had at Vanderbilt since I’ve been at Lipscomb,” Coach Bill Taylor said. “Traditionally, for some reason, we’ve struggled for the most part at this meet.” Setting the stage on Friday was Dani Walker winning the Invitational 1500 meters and setting a new school record with a record time of 4:21.34. Right behind her was Madi Talbert, who moved to No. 3 on Lipscomb’s all-time list. Ki’Ana Christy has really been excelling during this outdoor season. She has broken her jumping record for the second week in a row by jumping 11.36 meters. Setting her own personal record was Jazmyne McGill. She threw 38.09 meters in the hammer and in shot recorded 11.38 meters. Del McSpadden also found success in the hammer throw with a throw of 39.08 meters. Tucker Peabody found himself on the podium winning second place in the 200 meters with a 21.03 time. Peabody also came in second in the 100 meters crossing the finish line with a time of 10.55 “It’s very challenging to do the events in bad weather,” junior April Terry said. “In the rain it’s so easy to fall and slip.
