USC Upstate takes down Lady Bisons at senior night

The Lipscomb women’s basketball team was left in the dust during the second half, as USC Upstate powered over 76-67 Wednesday night in Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons put up a strong lead through the first half, but the Spartans proved to be too much for Lipscomb as they stole the court during the second half. The game got off to a fast start, with both teams moving up in points rapidly. Just four minutes into the game, senior Danay Fothergill shot two three-pointers. Fothergill scored 24 points in addition to seven rebounds and four assists in her final career home game. “Fothergill has been very strong of late,” Lipscomb head coach Greg Brown said. “She played with a lot of poise. We did a good job of getting her the ball in rhythm, and she made the shots. She was active on the boards, and got four assists as well. It was a good all-around game.” As the back and forth game continued, Lipscomb remained in the lead. “I liked our energy and effort – I thought those seniors came out and gave great leadership [and] played very hard,” coach Brown said. Momentum slowed down into the second part of the first half, but Fothergill powered down the court, scoring 13 points in the first half. Lipscomb was leading 27-24 at halftime. The Lady Bisons continued gaining momentum into the first part of the second half, leading by five points. Junior Ashley Southern shot a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, also adding four assists. Fothergill and Southern scored a combined 46 points, but that didn’t keep the Spartans from rallying....

Lady Bisons winning streak ends with loss to FGCU

The Lady Bisons winning streak ended at three as they fell to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles 71-49 Thursday evening in Allen Arena. While it was a slow start for both teams, the Eagles held the Lady Bisons to 19 points in the first half. Neither team was able to score in the first five minutes of play. Lipscomb struggled to find holes in the Florida Gulf Coast defense. The Lady Bisons also struggled to free up Ashley Southern for layups down low. Even with Southern’s struggles, she still managed to lead Lipscomb with 12 points. Head Coach Greg Brown talked about the importance of having three players score in double figures. Brown said that freshman guard Emily Eubank played a dominant role in the game, scoring 11 points. “Emily had great poise and composure,” Brown said. “It was good for her, as a freshman, to handle one of the best teams in the league.” Junior shooting guard Alex Banks also scored in double figures, with 10 points. Banks was productive from the field as well as at the free throw line. She shot four for five from the field and was perfect from the foul line. The Eagles came into the game with only two losses and were considered to be the thirtieth best team in the country. Gulf Coast’s leading scorer was Whitney Knight, who scored 18 points. The Eagles also had a strong defensive during the second half, in which they only allowed 30 points. The Lady Bisons would have liked a better outcome, but Brown said the team can build off of what they learned. “We were close on rebounds,” Brown said. “We also...

Former players speak on influence of legendary coach Don Meyer

The greatest lessons the late coach Don Meyer taught his players had nothing to do with how to play the game of basketball. Although they did learn countless strategies, schemes and tips for the game from Meyer, the most important lessons he taught his teams dealt with how to perform off the court. “Coach Meyer didn’t just influence me when it came to basketball, he influenced everything in my life,” former Bison Alan Banks said. “He influenced the way I do business. He even influenced the way I raise my kids.” Banks played at Lispcomb from 1978-1982 and has a daughter, upcoming junior Alex Banks, playing for the Lady Bisons’ basketball team “My daughter will hear something Coach Meyer said, and she will say that my dad tells me that all the time,” Banks said. Meyer first became known across the country for his impressive 923 wins totaled throughout his prolific career. However, the legendary coach stuck in people’s minds because of the life values that he instilled in his players. “He’s affected probably every area of my life,” former Lipscomb basketball player Wade Tomlinson said. “It would really be hard to narrow down to the best piece of non-basketball advice that he gave me because there were so many. But, mainly I guess for me, when bad things happen to you, look to help other people. I lost a son early on, and Coach Meyer did the service. He helped me out through a tough time.” During his 24 years at Lipscomb, as well as during his stints with Northern State and Hamline, Meyer took struggling programs and...

Lady Bisons battle but fall short to Kennesaw State Owls

A battle took place tonight in Allen Arena as the Lady Bisons returned home to take on Kennesaw State University after being away during the Christmas break. The Lipscomb Women’s Basketball team is 0-3 in conference after tonight’s 82-78 loss to KSU. Kennesaw scored the first points of the game, but did not regain the lead until the 11 minute mark in the first half. After that point in the game, the Lady Bisons struggled both offensively and defensively. At the half, the Owls led 45-36. Lady Bison Assistant Coach John Wild said the team needed to change some aspects of the game to be successful in the second half. “We’re doing a bad job defensively just being active,” Wild said. “I think if we can get some touches and deflections and that sort of thing, it may take them out of rhythm.” The Lady Bisons had a shooting percentage in the high 60’s during the first half, but went downhill during the second half. As the first half wore on, Lipscomb struggled with rebounds and down low in the paint.  One of the Lady Bison’s strongest players, forward Ashley Southern, had a hard time in the second half getting beat down low. The Lady Bisons did not give up and fought back for a lead. Redshirt Sophomore Danay Fothergill played in her first home game tonight and made herself known. Fothergill fouled out of the game at the end of the second half after scoring 18 points and winning seven rebounds. In the second half Coach Greg Brown and the Bisons began pressuring the Owls much more. Some...

Lady Bisons give it all they’ve got in OT loss to Morehead State

Allen Arena has been an exciting-yet-heartbreaking place for basketball in the past few days.  After the men’s basketball team nearly pulled off a big win over Belmont, the women’s basketball team opened their season in similar style, nearly topping their own Ohio Valley opponent. Despite a standout afternoon for redshirt sophomore Ashley Southern, the Lady Bisons fell in overtime 82-77 to the visiting Morehead State Lady Eagles. The Lady Bisons started off strong with two three-pointers from junior Sara Bliss, but Lady Eagle difference-maker Terrice Robinson began to put her own points on the board, giving Morehead State a brief lead. Soon after, Lipscomb took control of the first half, leading at halftime 33-25. The game looked to be far from the Lady Eagles’ reach when the Lady Bisons went up 47-33 with around fifteen minutes on the clock, but some key arch buckets from Robinson got Morehead State right back in the game. Lady Eagle Shanice Parker sunk a three at the 11:41 mark that that had the Lady Bisons’ lead down to four. The Lady Bisons began to once again distance themselves from Morehead, going up 57-49 at the eight minute mark, but more clutch play from the Lady Eagles allowed them to catch up to Lipscomb, taking a small lead as the final minutes ticked away. The Lady Bisons refused to call it quits, though, keeping the margin low for the Lady Eagles. With 19 seconds left, Robinson scored a layup that put Morehead up by 3, but a last-second three from Bliss sent the crowd into an uproar and the game into overtime. Though overtime...
