Before the 52nd annual Dove Awards began Tuesday night, performers and nominees arrived at Lipscomb’s own McQuiddy Gym. The artists arrived with their guests, wearing their best attire, as hundreds of students and other onlookers gathered to watch. After checking in, the artists were guided inside McQuiddy to the red carpet. Cameras flashed and questions were directed to artists such as LeCrae, Lauren Daigle and for KING & COUNTRY. Zach Williams brought along his two children, and Jenn Johnson, a lead singer of Bethel, made an appearance in a stunning green dress. Another fashion standouts were Pastor Mike Jr. in a satin teal suit. He is known for his music with hits such as “I Got It” and his passionate sermons. He talked about his emotions that came up from being back on a college campus. “I just feel like a college kid all over again,” Pastor Mike said. “I’m excited to be here.” His advice to Lipscomb students: “Take advantage of college and begin to grow your gift and become how God calls you to be.” In an interview with Ellie Holcomb and two other members from the recent Faithful project, it was referred to as “a memorable evening.” Holcomb shared her excitement for the 12-song collaboration album made to address how God speaks to women. A real surprise on the carpet was an appearance from Miss Tennessee, Tally Bevis. For the second time this season, Lipscomb men’s basketball has swept a conference opponent. Much like Friday night, the Bisons used a strong second-half performance to take down ASUN bottomfeeder Kennesaw State 77-63 in Allen Arena. Lipscomb is 15-10 and 9-5 in the ASUN and sitting at third place, while Kennesaw State has already clinched the No. 9 seed and will participate in a play-in game in the ASUN tourney. Four Bisons dialed in double-figure nights, with graduate transfer Romeao Ferguson leading the herd with 24. Sophomore guard KJ Johnson scored 20, freshman guard Will Pruitt had 18 (a career-high), and redshirt-junior center Ahsan Asadullah posted 12. Pruitt’s performance was most notable. A local 6-3 guard out of Mount Juliet, Pruitt was making his second consecutive start and just his third overall this season. Don’t be surprised if the Bisons keep him there, as he cashed in on the opportunity by going 6-of-7 and 5-of-6 from range while leading the team with seven rebounds. The Owls’ top two scorers this season were their top two scorers Saturday night. Leading scorer and junior guard Spencer Rodgers led the way with 21, and second-leading scorer and freshman guard Chris Youngblood followed suit with 12. Nobody else cashed in double digit points. Offensively, Lipscomb played a dismal first half. Lipscomb led 12-6 with 15:50 left in the first half before giving up a 14-2 run that lasted for over nine minutes. The Lipscomb University women’s basketball team took on the Stetson Hatters Saturday afternoon in Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons won, 58-54. This win continues the Lady Bisons’ win streak at home. The win was the first for the Lady Bisons over Stetson at home since 2010. On Jan. 23, senior forward Taylor Clark became the 10th lady bison to score 1000 points in her career, joining the Lady Bisons 1000 point club. Clark added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Bisons’ win tonight, while freshman guard Jordan Peete was the leading contributor with 15 points. The Lady Bisons came in hot from the arc shooting threes to take a lead over Stetson, 34-26 in the first half. Peete went on a run early in the 4th, pushing Lipscomb’s lead to double digits in the final quarter. The Lipscomb women’s basketball team has won a combined six conference games over the past two seasons. After falling in its first two ASUN games last weekend, Lipscomb got its first in an 84-72 home opener over Division I newcomer Bellarmine. It was the kind of balanced performance you’d dream of if you’re a head coach: all five starters for the Lady Bisons (4-5, 1-2 ASUN) scored in double figures. Lipscomb also went 16-of-32 from downtown. Junior guard and Hendersonville native Jane Deason tabbed a team-leading 15 points, while senior forward Taylor Clark had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sydney Shelton, Jalyn Holcomb and Casey Collier all brought in 14 points apiece. Bellarmine (0-6, 0-1 ASUN) just joined the conference this year after making the leap from Division II, where it made 16 NCAA tourney appearances. The Knights actually scored a season-high 72 points on Sunday, with senior guard Tasia Jeffries setting a new career-high with a team-leading 25. Bellarmine also shot 46 percent from downtown after averaging less than 20 percent of three-point makes all season long, but the Knights could not overcome large deficits throughout the game. Lipscomb’s 32 first-quarter points made Bellarmine’s day difficult from the get-go. The Lady Bisons led 21-7 with 3:58 left after Shelton connected from downtown. Bellarmine used a timeout at that point to try and slow Lipscomb’s momentum. The Knights would eventually narrow the deficit to 25-14 with 1:29 to go in the first quarter but were down by 15 heading into the second. Lipscomb’s Halloweek is having to endure COVID-19 regulations, but the majority of the events that Lipscomb has come to love and know are still happening. Normally, dodgeball would be in the courtyard of Fanning Hall. COVID-19 forced Lipscomb to consider different venues for the event before deciding to change the location to Allen Arena. “The decision was purely based on COVID protocols,” said Lipscomb’s Director of Community Life Kelvin Kelley. “We knew that this is a big part of the Lipscomb Student experience and wanted to ensure that it could happen, even if it looks a little different.” Just because the event location has changed doesn’t mean that the protocols have either. Lipscomb will follow the latest COVID-19 protocols at the event to ensure that no one is able to catch the virus at the event or for it to spread. Allen Arena is a much bigger location than the likes of Fanning Hall so there had to be an extra level of caution, but it’s nothing that can’t be handled. “We will have a contract tracing,” said Kelley. “Also, we will add temperature scanners to entrances. Everyone also has to RSVP for tickets within Allen Arena and must sit in the seat they have reserved.” Unfortunately due to COVID, one thing that has to be changed is the number of people that will be able to attend this event. SGA will allow for 300 people to attend this event via the reservation of tickets. The number of teams that are allowed for the event is currently at 16 teams.
