Most know Nashville for its rich music history, but a recent report has named this city the second-most vibrant art community in the nation. The National Center for Arts Rresearch report is based off of three things — art supply, demand and the level of government support. “The numbers are only the start of the story, not the end,” NCAR director Zannie Voss said on NCAR’s blog. “Each city in our report is unique in what makes it a vibrant community for the arts. Our intention in developing this report is to stimulate conversation about what makes a city vibrant in the arts and how arts vibrancy varies across cities.” It is because of Nashville’s diverse cultural opportunities that it was ranked ahead of New York, Boston and San Francisco. Stroll down lower Broadway to hear a mixture of country and honky-tonk music. Turn the corner to be just steps away from some of Nashville’s premiere music and performing arts venues, like the Ryman and TPAC. Art galleries and coffee shops are also easy to come by in this culture-rich city. To keep up with Nashville’s growth as an art community, The Frist Center for the Visual Arts hosts camps, family days and educational programs. The Frist also hosts a College Night every Thursday and Friday for students to create or simply do homework in the museum setting. Another event that sets Nashville apart is its monthly art crawl. Art galleries throughout the community host receptions and openings during the first Saturday of every month. The festive event takes place on Fifth Avenue North and admission is free. In a small art studio behind Elam Hall, Lipscomb senior Savannah Lampley works diligently in her art studio. Savannah was chosen to represent Lipscomb’s Inaugural Artist-In-Resident. With this honor came the opportunity to display her art at the Art Crawl – every student’s dream. When it comes to her studio, Savannah understand that there is no wrong or right when it comes to her art, but that she needs to embrace every aspect of it that she can. Thought Savannah is graduating in May with a Studio Art degree, she hopes that future students will open their hearts and minds to their passions. OPEN gallery, the first local art gallery run by university students, is a step toward making a stamp in the art world for Lipscomb’s art department. The gallery will showcase more than Lipscomb students’ art. Students are going beyond Lipscomb and Nashville to find artists. Mariel Bolton, a senior studio art major, said they are looking “anywhere we can find someone that we really appreciate their work.” Bolton and six other art majors serve on the student board that operate OPEN gallery. She said the board’s goal is “to find work that is new and innovative that Nashville is not used to seeing.” The first exhibition on Sept. 1 was called “The Rehearsal” and featured artist Joel Parsons, whose work includes sculpture, installation and performance. Parsons performed a piece from his Ballet Projects. Associate Professor Rocky Horton said he thinks the gallery will help Lipscomb art students compete on a higher level in the Nashville art scene. But that’s not all. “OPEN will allow Lipscomb art students to gain valuable experience in the business side of the art world,” Horton said, adding that it “will allow students to gain experience curating exhibits, selecting artists and acting as managers and operators.” The gallery is located in the Arcade, which is on 5th Avenue North in downtown Nashville.
