GMA Dove Awards to return to Music City, Lipscomb community

Christian music artists, fans and community members will return to Music City this fall to unite for the 46th Annual GMA Dove Awards show, “Better Together.” “Since 1969, the GMA Dove Awards has honored the outstanding achievement and excellence of our music community,”  GMA executive director Jackie Patillo said in a press release. “We hope to bring much more light to our mission with this year’s ‘Better Together’ theme as we focus on unity, diversity and creativity and come together during this exciting time in our industry.” The awards show will be held under Lipscomb’s roof in Allen Arena for the third consecutive year on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The Gospel Music Association now calls Lipscomb home after holding the awards show in Atlanta. Most may know Nashville as home of country music, but it is now a hub for the Christian music industry as well. On Wednesday, Aug. 12, a press conference was held at which award nominations were announced and Mayor Karl Dean spoke about the importance of music in Nashville’s community. “Not only do we get to celebrate the diversity of the music in Nashville, but we also get to celebrate the fact that hundreds of music fans will be traveling here in October and they will get to see our city firsthand,” Dean said. “Music is one of the top econmic drivers we have. It is the city’s DNA and it is who we are.” Dean described the music industry as Nashville’s “econmic engine,” with 215 million people listening to Christian and Gospel music each month, for example. “Lipscomb, along with other campuses, is a huge part of the boom we’re...

Lady Bison basketball released the competitive 2014-2015 schedule on Aug. 20. The highlight of the schedule for fans will be the game on Dec. 7 against the Tennessee Lady Vols at Allen Arena. “Hosting Tennessee at home is exciting,” red-shirt junior Danay Fothergill said. “We want to look at it as just another game. We want to use our advantages to be competitive and just have fun.” The regular season tips off Nov. 14 with Georgia Southern and Nov. 16 against Wright State. Both non-conference games will be played in Allen Arena. The highly anticipated Battle of the Boulevard matchup will be played Dec. 2 at Belmont. Before ending the non-conference schedule, the Lady Bisons will travel to Ohio to face Xavier on Dec. 20. After the Christmas holidays, Lipscomb takes on Georgia Tech in Atlanta Dec. 29. On Jan. 5 in Allen Arena, Trevecca will be the last team the Lady Bisons play before Atlantic Sun Conference play begins. Taqueria del Sol impresses on first visit with excellent cuisine

Taqueria del Sol, the new restaurant in 12th Avenue South, has certainly got my vote.  The Atlanta-based restaurant opened for the first time in Nashville on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The name of the restaurant makes the diner think of of truly authentic Mexican cuisine, but that is not entirely the case.  While Taqueria del Sol is known for fantastic Mexican food, there are some delicious nontraditional items that are much more prominent. The first thing the waiter said to me when suggesting foods to try was that I should try the turnip greens.  Now, I had never had them before, and turnip greens did not sound like they would taste good with a taco, but I gave it a shot.  I was not disappointed.  The turnip greens were spectacular!  I make a point of emphasizing them because these turnip greens have been listed as one of the “100 Food You Absolutely Must Try Before You Die” according to Bon Appetit and Garden & Gun magazines. Another menu item that was especially delightful yet different for a Mexican restaurant was the shrimp corn chowder.  I have never seen corn chowder as a Mexican dish, but either way, it was absolutely the best thing I tasted.  I recommend this dish whenever you visit. Onto some more dishes — tacos and burritos.  Taqueria del Sol has some specialty tacos.  For example, I had the Memphis taco.  It is simply a taco that consists of pulled pork, barbeque sauce and cheese (if you ask).  I loved it. The burritos were also fantastic.  Several different sauces are offered for the burrito.  They offer somewhat...
