The Lipscomb track and field team continued an excellent season this past week with three Bisons competing at the NCAA East Preliminaries. Junior Gemikal Prude and sophomores Colin Dempster and Madi Talbert traveled to Jacksonville for a chance to earn a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Finals. On Thursday, junior Colin Dempster set a new school record in the 400 meters with a time of 47.23 seconds. Dempster broke his own school record of 47.29 which he set during the Atlantic Sun Championships. Although he broke the school record, Dempster did not qualify for the NCAA Finals. Friday saw Talbert finish fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:08.21, good enough to send her to her second straight NCAA Outdoor Finals. Her time set a new school record as well. Prude, no stranger to national competition, became the second Bison to qualify for the Outdoor Finals on Saturday with an eighth place finish in the high jump thanks to a 2.14 mark. The spring semester may have ended two weeks ago for most students, but for spring athletics things have now just started to wrap up. For anyone that is a Bison fan, what an amazing spring it has been for all the athletes. The Lipscomb track and field team completed their Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships in Jacksonville, Florida, May 16 and 17th. Much like the whole year, many Bisons found success. Madi Talbert received first place in the 3000-meter race. Talbert finished with a time of 10:28.76 making her the record holder in the A-Sun outdoor 3000 meter, but it did not stop there for Talbert as she finished with the gold in the 5000 meters. Freshman Sally Larson also received first place in her 10,000 meter event. April Terry was covered in bronze as she threw the shot put 13.10 meters and the hammer throw with a distance of 50.29 meters, both for third place finishes. “I didn’t feel ready the week before the meet. I prayed and meditated, asking God to help me with my attitude,” April Terry said. “In the hammer, I fouled my first two throws and threw a short throw to get into the finals. The same happened in shot. I had to trust that God was going to work it out and believe that I could do it.” “This meet taught me about trusting God and about prayer,” Terry said. “When I look at the two metals that I won, I just have to give thanks to God.” Also, receiving third place was Kevin Floyd who cleared 4.63 meters in the pole vault. The Lipscomb men’s golf team capped a successful season with a fifth place finish in the 2014 Atlantic Sun Men’s Golf Championship. The Bisons overcame a 12 stroke deficit in the final round of action on Tuesday to leap Jacksonville for fifth place, the highest finish in the A-Sun tournament in school history. “We work processing things that we do on the golf course, and we’ve been working on those stringently for the last four months,” head coach Will Brewer said. “I think our team rose to the occasion. We all kind of sold out and believed in what we were trying to do, and it came together that last day. “We talked about moving up to the fifth spot potentially. 12 shots is a lot, but we felt like if we played well and they didn’t play quite as well then we could do it. Fortunately it worked out,” Brewer said. Finishing in the top five of a conference with six of the nation’s top 100 teams took a great overall team performance from Lipscomb. Head Coach Will Brewer was proud of how the team performed in the tournament. “We set some goals this year, and we accomplished most of them,” Brewer said. “We wanted to finish in the top three to five in the conference, and with six teams ranked in the top 100, we knew that would be a challenge. Fortunately we kept getting better and better as the season went on. “I’m very pleased with our program, and where we are right now. Before the semester becomes too overloaded with events and calendars gets completely booked, Lumination would like to offer a handy guide to all of the events coming up during the fall semester. September looks to bring a full slate of men’s and women’s soccer games. Pledge week also kicks off in September as Bid Night took place Sept. 12. Some of Lipscomb’s most anticipated events begin in October starting with the Tau Phi Cowboy show on Oct. 5, Paint the Herd on Oct. 30 and Haunted High Rise scaring students on Oct. 30. The women’s volleyball schedule kicks into high gear during October as well. Lipscomb’s annual Dodgeball tournament will start November off with a bang. The men’s basketball team will open up their season against Belmont with the Battle of the Boulevard against rival Belmont on Nov. 8, followed by the women’s Battle less than a week later on Nov. 14. Everything from sporting events across all sports to special Student Activities Board sponsored events, to usual favorites like Wednesday Night We Eat are taking place throughout the next few months, making Lipscomb’s campus a busy place.
