Lipscomb closes majority of dining options due to staffing issues

Lipscomb announced Tuesday morning that campus dining is experiencing “industry-wide” staffing issues due to COVID and the national labor shortage. “Many industries across the country are experiencing staffing shortages due to labor availability and health concerns. Unfortunately, from time to time these challenges also affect the Lipscomb community,”said the university in an email to students. “This week, Sodexo, our partner that operates and staffs Lipscomb Dining operations, is experiencing a staffing shortage across their Nashville operations which has an impact on the number of employees who are available to staff the various dining locations on our campus.” Toss, Blue Coast Burrito, Au Bon Pain, Chick-fil-A and Creekstone will be closed for the foreseeable future. Lipscomb also warned students that open dining establishments are likely to experience longer than normal wait times. This story is developing. Lumination will continue to update you on the dining closures. ...
Lipscomb students explore different cultures for WOW Week

Lipscomb students explore different cultures for WOW Week

Lipscomb’s campus experienced a whole new world this week. Sponsored by Lipscomb’s intercultural development department, the second annual Welcome to Our Worlds Week celebrated different cultures on campus. “This week is to encourage camaraderie amongst students and kind of get them out of their comfort zone,” said Mariah Lester, vice president of Kappa Iota Theta. KIT’s talent show kicked off the week showcasing performances from mimes to dancers. Tino Liu, a freshman who performed a Jason Mraz mashup, said that there was one thing that united all cultures during the week. “It’s really all about spreading love,” said Liu. “Everyone needs a little bit of love, so spread it.” WOW week also put a spotlight on flags from around the world outside the student center. Thursday afternoon food trucks lined the Allen Arena mall so that students could try food from different cultures. “It’s cool to see different kinds of food on campus,” sophomore Karli Whitson said. “It brings people out and about on campus.” The trucks brought in the community and broke up the normal food court options. “I am slightly overwhelmed with all the choices, but it’s exciting to have options,” senior Matt Brown said. “I was going to eat at Au Bon Pain, but then I saw food trucks, so that’s a nice change of pace.” Other activities for the week like live music, fashion and dancing allowed for unusual opportunities for students. “It [WOW week] helps students get engaged in the community and helps them learn about the different cultures at Lipscomb,” Lester...

Lipscomb community celebrates Au Bon Pain grand opening

While traveling several years ago, Lipscomb president Randy Lowry ran across an Au Bon Pain and wanted to bring it to campus. That idea became a reality at the cafe’s grand opening this Tuesday. “We finally got to the point of having the place, having the time, having Sodexo’s support and having this little French cafe,” Lowry said. The grand opening of Au Bon Pain brought in a wave of students to the newly renovated portion of the Student Activities Center. Festivities included free food samples, games like corn hole and spike ball and a raffle for Predators tickets, food coupons, reusable cups and more. The cafe has been popular since it opened on limited hours last week. “It’s a perfect location for folks to be able to come over and spend some time relaxing in the dining area,” said Wolcott Fary, Sodexo general manager. “In conjunction with the Student Activity Center, it’s a powerhouse punch.” Au Bon Pain offers a wide variety of options including hot and cold sandwiches, pastries, coffee, soups and salads, plus a large seating area for students to socialize or do homework. “It’s very popular,” junior Lindsey Lang said. “The salads are on point, so they’re really delicious, and so far the pastries I’ve had are pretty good.” Lang said the wait to get her sandwich one day was long, but it was worth the wait. Sophomore Zack Eccleston said he loves the new cafe and bakery. “I love that it’s actually kind of a full service restaurant at Lipscomb, and it’s really, really good,” Eccleston said. One popular item among students is the reusable cup. Once...

Students anticipate opening of health-conscious chain Au Bon Pain

After six months of construction, students are able to see major development of the Au Bon Pain cafe located in the Student Activities Center. This healthy sandwich and pastries shop was first set to open in fall 2014, but due to changed plans and measures required by the Metro Codes Department, the opening date was delayed to spring 2015. Walls and lighting fixtures have been put into place in addition to a new door that will lead to an outdoor patio. With changes being made rapidly, Au Bon Pain could open its doors to students after spring break. “The most important part of our service is that we hope to satisfy the needs of all the students, and we are excited to get Au Bon Pain up and running,” said Elizabeth Coburn, VP International Franchise Operator for Au Bon Pain. An employee in the SAC, junior Melissa Kromer, said that despite the setbacks most students are looking forward to seeing the completed space. “Everyone is excited to see what the new cafe will have to offer,” Kromer said. “Since the area used to be used mainly as an additional work out space, students have been eager at the time that has been spent constructing this building.” For the health-conscious gym-goers and the occasional night class student, Coburn said that the restaurant’s food will be satisfactory for everyone. “Since it is in the SAC we will have lots of food to choose from,” Coburn said. “We will have healthy options and other options. There will be ready made sandwiches but also sandwiches and salads that the students will be able create from scratch.” Along with sandwiches and...
