Lumination wins big at journalism conferences

Spring has been full of honors for Lipscomb journalists and Lumination Network. Honorees from the Lumination staff attended the Southeast Journalism Conference in February and the Society of Professional Journalists Region 12 conference at Lipscomb this past weekend to receive their awards. The Southeast Journalism Conference (SEJC) held its 25th annual convention in Troy, Ala. on Feb. 19, 2011. The conference was a learning experience for the students as well as a competition. Twenty professional journalists from magazines and newspapers around the country judged entries submitted prior to the conference. The SEJC judges named 126 of the 331 applicants the “Best of the South.” Three Lumination Network writers were honored at the conference, as well as the overall website being named the seventh best college website amongst the 33 eligible schools in the area. Lumination’s managing editor Hunter Patterson, a junior journalism major from Waverly, Tenn., was awarded second place in the category of Best Multimedia Journalist. Rachel Carden, a junior multimedia production and journalism double-major from Smyrna, Tenn., placed ninth in the News Reporter portion of the competition. Carden was extremely pleased with the level of hospitality that Troy University showed the conference attendees, as well as how well manicured the campus was upon their arrival for the event. The final honoree from Lipscomb was junior multimedia production major Ryan Malone, from Wellington, Fla. Malone snagged fifth place in the College Journalist of the Year category, and is multimedia manager for Lumination Network.   As for the most recent event, the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Region 12 conference was held at Lipscomb University. Ragtime still gaining honors months later

Three months after its opening, Ragtime and its cast are still receiving recognition. New director, Mike Fernandez, has revamped the drama department since his arrival. The theater department has grown from only three majors, four years ago, to over thirty current majors. This growth led to what senior American studies major from Memphis, Matt Raich, feels is safe to say “Lipscomb’s best and biggest production ever.” Seth Jones, a senior and vocal music education major from Rhodesdale, Md., says he is excited to see Lipscomb adding to its music-related programs. “After all, in Music City we should at least seek to be musically excellent,” Jones said. Ragtime featured a very large and diverse cast. Because of their exceptional performances, several actors and the entire production were nominated for various competitions. Tyler Ashley, a sophomore and musical theatre major from Nashville, and Caleb Pritchett, a junior and double acting and directing major from Franklin, Tenn., were both nominated for what Pritchett refers to as the “Heisman of college theater,” the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship. As a part of this nomination, over 200 nominees competed in Tampa, Fla. Pritchett was also nominated for Best Actor in a Musical (Non-Professional) by Broadway World and came in third in the voting. “As an actor, when you can make someone feel a strong emotion, it makes you feel good and affirms that what you’re doing on stage has a purpose and the audience is actually getting something out of it,” Pritchett said. Raich and fellow Ragtime actor Luciano Vignola have also been recognized for their performances and will be attending the Southeastern Theatre Conference...

Six Lady Bisons, coach earn postseason awards

The Lipscomb Lady Bisons’ domination of the Atlantic Sun Conference continues. Sophomore pitcher Whitney Kiihnl was named conference Player of the Year and was the unanimous choice as conference Pitcher of the Year by a vote of A-Sun coaches and sports information directors. Lady Bisons coach Kristin Ryman, who has guided the Lady Bisons to the A-Sun regular season championship, was named A-Sun Coach of the Year. She also won the award in 2008 when the Lady Bisons tied for the regular season title. Kiihnl has a 28 wins overall and is 11-0 in A-Sun games. She has five shutouts, including a perfect game against Austin Peay Feb. 26. She was a five-time A-Sun Pitcher of the Week this season. “I am so happy for Whitney,” Ryman said. “She has put together an unbelievable year both in the circle and at the plate. I couldn’t be more proud of her. “With as many good players as we have, she still stands out. I think she is very deserving of both awards, and I think it is cool that the coaches in the A-Sun think the same way. Whitney is truly one of the most well-respected players in our league. I think the most exciting thing for us is that we get her for two more years.” She has been the leader nationally in NCAA Division I in earned run average for most of the season with a .71. Kiihnl also doubled as a designated player this season, batting .361, fourth highest overall in the A-Sun. “She has done it all for us this year,”  Ryman said. “She is obviously...
