Senior night for the Lipscomb women’s soccer team did not go as planned as they were shut out by Northern Kentucky Friday. Lipscomb attempted more than twice as many shots as NKU, but in the end had nothing to show for it, resulting in a 2-0 loss. Prior to the game, the Lady Bisons honored their three seniors: Karli Crosby, Baylee Linnell and Brittany Rupple. With conference tournament implications on the line, the stakes were very high. NKU’s Aubrey Muench opened the score in the 30th minute to give the Norse a 1-0 lead, then scored again in the 49th minute to seal the win. The Purple and Gold finish the regular season with a 10-6-2 record overall and 4-2-1 in conference. As it stands now, the Lady Bisons will likely head into the Atlantic Sun Tournament as the No. 2 seed, and will have a first round bye before taking on the winner between the No. 3 seed Jacksonville and No. 6 seed Kennesaw State. The two weekend, single-elimination tournament begins next Saturday, Nov. 1, and will conclude Sunday, Nov. 9 at Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Meyers, Fla. The Lady Bisons soccer team defended their home turf with a 1-0 victory against the Catamounts of Western Carolina University Friday night. Throughout the first half, the Lady Bisons kept the tempo high and their opponent on their heels with aggressive play that created many scoring opportunities, but score at the half remained 0-0. In the second half, Lipscomb showed great defense, and yet had a problem with offensively. The tempo picked up even more, with many close calls from both Lipscomb and Western Carolina. But, the results of the second half only matched what came from the first with both teams remaining scoreless at the end of regulation. With 10 extra minutes added for overtime, Western Carolina raised the intensity level, creating an onslaught of attempts to score and end the game. However, they were turned away with the determined defense of the Lady Bisons and sophomore goalie Anna Buhigas, who kept the show going. With the first additional 10 minutes ending up scoreless, there was a second 10 minute period added on. Both the Bisons and Catamounts were landlocked and could not find their way into the back of the net, until senior Baylee Linnell found fellow senior Brittany Rupple who then scorched a shot into the upper left corner of the goal past the outstretched arms of the Western Carolina goalkeeper Carly Tinstman. The fall sports teams are off to a great start this semester. Here is a recap on the games that have already been completed so far. Volleyball The Lipscomb volleyball team opened up the 2014 season with a 2-1 record at the Kansas Invitational. Friday Aug. 29 started with a disappointing season opener, losing 3-1 to No. 23 Creighton. Junior Brittany Estes recored her first career triple double in the match with 12 kills, 12 digs and 10 assists. Junior Bri McCombs led Lipscomb with 19 digs. Senior Lauren Ford added 18 digs. The big win came later that night against No. 22 Kansas. The Lady Bisons were down 2-0, but rallied back winning three sets in a row to get the 3-2 victory. The win was the first for the program over a ranked opponent. Lipscomb took set three 25-14, set four 26-24 and set five 15-12. Senior Jewell Dobson had a match-high 20 kills. Estes notched a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. McCombs recorded a match-high 20 digs. Coach Brandon Rosenthal earned his 200th win after the Lady Bisons defeated Utah Valley 3-1 on Aug. 30. Lipscomb won the first set 25-23, third set 25-17 and fourth set 25-15. Estes had 10 kills in the match, and earned a spot on the All-Tournament team for the invitational. Ford recorded a match high 15 kills. McCombs led the team with 14 digs. Junior Molly Spitznagle’s hitting percentage was .562 in the match with 10 kills.
