Jesica Beaty, a former sports writer for Lumination, now has a new beat: Major League Baseball wife. Beaty, a 2015 journalism and new media alumna, married her high school sweetheart and Belmont alum Matt Beaty. Matt played baseball for the Bruins and for the last few years has made his way up through the Los Angeles Dodgers’ minor-league organization. Jesica and Matt have been married for two and a half years. After the two got married, Jesica left her full-time job as a managing editor with The Aransas Pass (Texas) Progress and Ingleside Index to follow Matt. The couple has moved around quite a bit. Currently, the Beatys reside in Oklahoma, home of the Triple A Oklahoma City Dodgers. Matt was drafted by the Dodgers in 2015 and has played in the Rookie, Single A, Double A and Triple A leagues. Matt was added to the Dodgers’ 40-man lineup back in November. This year the Dodgers used one of his options and sent him to the minor league during spring training; this allows him to be called up and down at any time this year. Matt was called up by the Dodgers earlier this month for a game against the San Francisco Giants. “It was about 12:30 at night, and the Triple A manager called Matt,” Jesica said. “I was so excited for him and just so excited it was finally happening.” During that game, in his first at-bat in the major leagues, he got a hit and his first RBI. Thanks to an error from the Belmont catcher in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Bisons won the Battle of the Boulevard 10-9 on Tuesday night at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. Sophomore Hunter Hanks scored the winning run for the Bisons after freshman Tyler Brown put the ball into play, forcing Belmont catcher Alec Diamond to hurry his throw. The ball sailed past the first baseman giving Lipscomb the victory. The hit by Brown was his first walk-off of the season. “I was honestly caught in the moment,” Brown said. “It was my first walk-off, and I had a great time. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates.” Brown was the designated hitter for the Bisons, but that didn’t cause him to feel any more pressure than normal during hit at-bat. “It is my role on the team this year,” Brown said. “I had to stay calm and do my job.” Belmont jumped on the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning, but Lipscomb answered with three runs. The Bisons scored two runs in the bottom of the third with a big hit from senior Jonathan Allison. Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand called a double steal that brought freshman Michael Gigliotti home from third. Lipscomb scored two more runs after sacrifice flies from Allison and Gigliotti. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bisons scored two runs on a sacrifice bunt from redshirt freshman Allan Hooker and an RBI single from freshman Jeffrey Crisan. The Lipscomb baseball team lost the second game of the Battle of the Boulevard 13-3 Tuesday night at E.S. Rose Park in Nashville. The Bruins scored eight runs in the first two innings, and Lipscomb did not get on the board until the third inning. Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand told athletics that the Bisons struggled to come back after the rough start. “When you get down early in the game, it’s deflating for the whole team,” Forehead said. “We got off to a bad start and nobody is trying to figure it out any quicker than the players and the coaching staff.” Redshirt sophomore infielder Adam Lee got an infield single in the third to start things. Junior infielder Mike Kote hit a triple to score Lee. Redshirt junior outfielder Josh Lee hit a sacrifice fly to score Korte. Lipscomb would score one more run in the fifth off an RBI single from freshman infielder Hunter Hanks. Hanks went 2-for-4 at the plate. Adam Lee went 2-for-3. Belmont’s junior infielder Matt Beaty earned six RBIs with a triple that plated two runs as well as a three run homerun. Junior Chase Cunningham got the win for the Bruins giving up two earned runs and two hits. Redshirt freshman Dalton Curtis took the loss for the Bisons giving up five earned runs and three hits.
