Lumination’s 2014 Dove Awards preview: Worship Song of the Year

On Tuesday, Oct. 7, the title of Worship Song of the Year will be awarded to one of five songs at the 45th Annual Dove Awards in Allen Arena. Because churchgoers praise God with these songs every Sunday, Worship Song of the Year is more personal than many of the other categories. Because worship songs are a way for Christians to express themselves to God, they are an extremely important part of Christian culture The nominees are as follows: “Future/Past” performed by John Mark McMillan, written by John Mark McMillan “Lord I Need You” performed by Matt Maher, written by Christy Nockels, Daniel Carson, Jesse Reeves, Kristian Stanfill, Matt Maher “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” performed by Hillsong United, written by Matt Crocker, Joel Houston and Salmon Ligthelm “Open Up The Heavens” performed by Meredith Andrews and the Vertical Church Band, written by Meredith Andrews, Jason Ingram, Stu G., Andi Rozier and James MacDonald “The Only Name (Yours Will Be)” performed by Big Daddy Weave, written by Benji Cowart “Oceans” seems to be the favorite in this category as it has been nominated for Contemporary Christian Performance of the Year, Pop/Contemporary Song of the Year and Song of the Year. In addition to these accolades, Hillsong United has been nominated for Artist of the Year. The song’s powerful message and immense popularity should earn it a win in this category. The 44th annual Dove Awards is happening Tuesday night in Allen Arena. To prepare you for the evening’s festivities, here are some of the nominees for Song of the Year category, awarded to songwriters and publishers. “10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord),” artist Matt Redman, writer Jonas Myrin This seems to be a church favorite. I don’t think there has been one church I have gone to this year that hasn’t used this song during worship. “The Proof of your Love,” artist For King & Country, writers Ben Glover, Jonathan Lee Australian-born, Nashville-based brothers Luke and Joel were named by Billboard as one of the “New Artists to Watch” for 2012. “Take me to the King,” artist Tamela Mann, writer Kirk Franklin Mann is a recipient of the 2011 Dove Award for Traditional Gospel album of the year. Her song “Take me to the King” topped U.S. Billboard Gospel Song charts for weeks straight. It was also nominated for a Grammy. “Whom Shall I Fear,” artist Chris Tomlin, writer Ed Cash Tomlin is a multiple Dove Award recipient. “One Thing Remains,” artist Kristian Stanfill, writer Brian Johnson I visited a church in Atlanta across the span of several months. This song was the staple worship song. I didn’t complain. Last year, Michael Neale’s “Your Name is Great” won the Dove Award for the then-titled Worship Song of the Year. Who will win this year’s newly named category? Another group of performers join Dove lineup

Just when the preforming lineup couldn’t get any bigger for this year’s Dove Awards, it has. Needtobreathe was added to the mix for the awards set for Oct. 15 in Allen Arena.  The South Carolina-based band joins Big Daddy Weave, Kristian Stanfill, Michael W. Smith, TobyMac and other big-name Christian artists as performers in the 44th annual Dove Awards. Needtobreathe is a multiple-Dove Award winner, including a 2012 “Group of the Year” award and won two other awards last year for their song “Slumber” and for their album The Reckoning. Among the added artists, Andy Mineo, Dailey & Vincent, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, The Isaacs, Karen Peck, KB and Trip Lee are scheduled to preform as well. Bone Hampton was also announced as a presenter. He joins Joyce Meyer, Lecrae, Mandisa, Pastor Rick Warren and others previously announced. New performers and presenters set for 2013 Dove Awards

Another round of performers and presenters are set for the 2013 Dove Awards, which are set to take place in at Allen Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 15. The line-up of performers continues to grow with the addition of Big Daddy Weave, Captial Kings, Colton Dixon, Jason Crabb, Kristian Stanfill, Rhett Walker Band and Tasha Cobbs. These artists will perform alongside the previously announced artists Gaither Vocal Band, Michael W. Smith, Tamela Mann and TobyMac. New presenters Brandon Heath, Candace Cameron Bure, David Mann, Joyce Meyer and Montell Jordan have been added to the show in addition to previously announced presenters Dr. Bobby Jones, Isaac Carree, Jaci Velasquez, Lecrae and Pastor Rick Warren. Former Dove New Artist of the Year winners Jamie Grace and Chris August will be hosting the pre-show ceremony.
