The men’s basketball team faced off against Jacksonville in Allen Arena with hopes to pull out a win to end their 3-game losing streak. The Bisons fell short to the Dolphins in overtime 89-85, their record now 7-13 being 8th in the ASUN Conference. Despite the hard loss, Coach Lennie Acuff had nothing but positive words for his team. “It was a tough loss,” said Acuff. “I thought they played really really well, you have to tip your hat to them. Lipscomb may have beaten Kennesaw State in an extra inning 4-3 victory Friday night, but the Owls answered back in the final two games of the series at Ken Dugan Field in Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. The first game of the series came with a walk-off win for the Bisons courtesy of senior Josh Lee. Lee hit the walk-off double in the bottom of the tenth inning. Freshman Jeffrey Crisan had an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, and senior Jonathan Allison had two RBI’s in the bottom of the first and third. Lipscomb was hoping to carry the momentum from the first game into the rest of the series. In the second game on Saturday afternoon, the Owls answered back, defeating the Bisons 4-3. Senior Mike Korte had two RBI’s in the second and seventh innings. KSU had three runs scored in the fifth due to RBI’s by Alex Liquori and Grant Williams. An error by Lipscomb second baseman Korte also contributed to the Owl’s scoring. Liquori had an RBI single in the top of the eighth for the Owls. Junior Chucky Vazquez tried to get something going for Lipscomb in the bottom of the ninth by hitting a solo home run, but Lipscomb could not tack on any more runs. The Bisons were looking for a better result in the final game on Sunday. The final game of the series resulted in a 12-5 Owls victory. KSU scored runs in the first, second, fourth, sixth, and eighth innings. The most productive inning for the Owls came in the top of the fourth, where they scored four runs. Thanks to an error from the Belmont catcher in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Bisons won the Battle of the Boulevard 10-9 on Tuesday night at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. Sophomore Hunter Hanks scored the winning run for the Bisons after freshman Tyler Brown put the ball into play, forcing Belmont catcher Alec Diamond to hurry his throw. The ball sailed past the first baseman giving Lipscomb the victory. The hit by Brown was his first walk-off of the season. “I was honestly caught in the moment,” Brown said. “It was my first walk-off, and I had a great time. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates.” Brown was the designated hitter for the Bisons, but that didn’t cause him to feel any more pressure than normal during hit at-bat. “It is my role on the team this year,” Brown said. “I had to stay calm and do my job.” Belmont jumped on the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning, but Lipscomb answered with three runs. The Bisons scored two runs in the bottom of the third with a big hit from senior Jonathan Allison. Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand called a double steal that brought freshman Michael Gigliotti home from third. Lipscomb scored two more runs after sacrifice flies from Allison and Gigliotti. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bisons scored two runs on a sacrifice bunt from redshirt freshman Allan Hooker and an RBI single from freshman Jeffrey Crisan. The Bison baseball team returned home from the Dominican Republic with a stronger sense of appreciation for what they have and formed bonds with one another that they believe will carry on into the season. The team served together on their first all-team mission trip where they renovated a local sandlot field. The guys built dugouts, put up a backstop, leveled the playing surface and spruced up the field. They worked from Dec. 12 to Dec. 19 alongside a pastor named Michel. When the team wasn’t hard at work they had some free time to kill. “When we weren’t working, we spent a lot of time playing with the kids in the local community,” senior Josh Lee said. Senior J Hwang talked about the impact simply spending time with the kids had on him. “The biggest impact for me was the relationship that I got to build with the community and the teammates that I went with,” Hwang said. “I spent a lot of time with the kids, just hanging out hours after hours even though I couldn’t speak Spanish.” Lee said he was most impacted by the lifestyle the people of the community lived, and the joy he saw in their lives. “The biggest impact the trip had on me was how happy and appreciative the people in the community were, especially the kids,” Lee said. “They have very little, but you wouldn’t know that because they never stopped smiling while we were there.” Not only did the trip impact the individual players on the team, but it also helped the team form strong bonds with one another....

Former Lipscomb Bison baseball player Caleb Joseph’s journey to the majors has seen stops in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and Arizona since he was selected in the seventh round of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft. On Wednesday night in Tampa, Joseph made his MLB debut for the Baltimore Orioles against the Tampa Bay Rays. Joseph, who replaced usual starter at catcher Matt Wieters, batted 0-3 on the night. Joseph has spent the last seven years playing baseball in various minor leagues with great success since his playing days at Lipscomb. Last season alone, Joseph was named to the mid-season and post-season Eastern League All Star Team and took home the honors of Eastern League MVP and Home Run Derby champion. Joseph finished the season with a batting average of .299 with 22 home runs and 97 RBIs. At Lipscomb, Joseph was a key contributor to Lipscomb’s first Atlantic Sun championship and subsequent NCAA Tournament appearance. In the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, he homered in the Bisons’ upset win over the Georgia Bulldogs. Joseph is the third Bison to have played in the MLB, joining current Colorado Rockies pitcher Rex Brothers and current Colorado Rockies assistant coach Bo McLaughlin. McLaughlin played for the Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves and Oakland Athletics in his MLB career. Joseph’s brother, Corban Joseph, also made a MLB appearance for the New York Yankees in 2013.
