On Saturday night, Lipscomb’s four seniors were just two consecutive FGCU points away from never seeing the NCAA tournament in their college careers. In the fifth set, FGCU’s Erin Shomaker gave the Eagles a 14-13 lead to set up match point. All the Eagles had to do was collect the next point, and that would have been ballgame. But then three of the Bisons’ seniors aided in a 3-0 run that ultimately gave the Bisons the win Saturday evening. Senior hitter Megan Kuper tied the game on kill, and senior blocker Sami Rubal assisted with a block after that. And then it was senior defensive specialist Ashley Maher who set the ball up for junior hitter Garret Joiner, who rocketed it past FGCU libero Dana Axner near the back endline for the game-winner. The ASUN named Rubal the tournament MVP, and Dilfer and senior libero Alyssa Zwolensky received All-Tournament team honors. It will be the eighth NCAA tournament appearance in Lipscomb history, all of which have come under 18-year head coach Brandon Rosenthal. Lipscomb first advanced to the tourney in 2007. The Bisons have won the ASUN championship seven times (they received an at-large bid in 2014). ESPNU will air the selection show at 3 p.m. CT. The Division I volleyball tournament will be played in Omaha, Nebraska. Rubal and Kuper led the way with 14 and 13 kills for Lipscomb, while Joiner followed up with 12. Freshman Delaney Dilfer once again had an impeccable evening setting the ball, as she accounted for 50 assists after garnering 53 the night before. After having their weekend series postponed, Lipscomb Volleyball was finally able to play their second conference opponent of the season, the UNA Lions, in the first game of their two-game series, where Lipscomb won 3-0. Due to delaying these games, the second game of the series will be played in Florence, AL Tuesday night. Lipscomb started and finished hot Monday night winning both the first and third sets by commanding margins of 12 and 13 points, however, in the second set, the Lions kept it close falling only by 3 points, 22-25. The Bisons are now 3-0 in conference play after sweeping Liberty on the road two weekends ago and 6-1 overall. The Bisons currently sit in second place in the ASUN behind Kennesaw State, who is 6-0 in conference play this season. Leading the way for the Bisons in kills were outside hitters freshman Kamryn Bacus with 15 and senior Megan Kuper with 13, and assisting them were freshman setters Brooke Phillips with 22 and Delaney Dilfer with 17. For the Lions, freshman Kamryn Parsonage led UNA in kills with 7. Lipscomb hopes to stay on their hot streak as their busy schedule continues. This week alone the Bisons still play three more games finishing off this first two-game series with North Alabama and then another two-game series against Bellarmine at home before returning to Florence next week for the second two-game series against the Lions. After a crushing defeat on Friday night, Lipscomb was still looking for their confidence in round 2 of the home series matchup against FGCU. With a little spurring for the Bisons the first half still started off similarly to how their previous contest finished up, stunted on offense. Luckily for Lipscomb, the Eagles looked cold at the start of this matchup too, and only 19 points were scored in the first 10 minutes of the half. The defense was at a maximum to start off this ballgame. Midway through the first half though Lipscomb seemed to finally find their energy after a technical foul called on FGCU the Bison’s held that momentum into the half with a nine-point lead. And for the first time all weekend, the Bisons looked to have the energy and chemistry that was lacking Friday night. One of the most standout performances of the night for the Bisons came from Freshman Will Pruitt. Pruitt saw his most minutes in a conference matchup so far with 18 coming off the bench. Down the stretch of the 2nd half as well, he seemed to be the pacesetter for Lipscomb. Lipscomb held upon their strong defense going into the second half but saw their lead shrink down with a scoring drought midway through the second half. In the second half, they saw a fancy Pruitt finish at the rim, and some more needed energy on offense to keep their lead at two. Lipscomb came off of a split last weekend with UNF and looked poised to bounce back against the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, but the Bisons were unable to stop the Eagles who outplayed Lipscomb in the second half and won by a score of 79-69. With an 11-0 run to start off the game for Lipscomb, things looked optimistic in the first half. However, from there, FGCU went on a 19-4 scoring run that had them up midway through the first half by four. The Bisons managed to claw their way back towards the end of the half with a three-pointer from sophomore guard KJ Johnson, free throws from senior guard Romeao Ferguson and hustle plays from senior forward Parker Hazen. With the late surge in the first half, Lipscomb found themselves ahead 36-32 going into the halftime break. With a fairly even first half from the conference foes, the question was who would pull ahead in the second half. As Lipscomb has been struggling to hold leads in recent matchups, the Bisons were hoping to break the trend with some reliable defense for the second half. Out of the gates, things were neck and neck. Both teams battled for the lead, but once the Eagles took the lead with 12:36 in the second half, they wouldn’t look back. Lipscomb tried to hold on, closing the lead back to three with six minutes remaining in the contest, but then with back-to-back 3’s from FGCU, the game became out of reach for the Bisons. Lipscomb nailed a season-high of threes and shot 51.4 percent from the floor tonight, defeating the Crowley’s Ridge Patriots, 97-60. It was a game full of season highs, college-career debuts and first-time starters for the Bisons. Freshman guard Will Pruitt and freshman forward Luke Howard made their collegiate debuts tonight. Pruitt finished the game with eight points, six rebounds, and four assists. Howard with five points and eight rebounds. Freshman forward Ed Eubanks scored on a drive, making those the first points of his career. Sophomore guard Carson Cary made his first-career start and score 13 points. And freshman guard Tommy Murr scored a career-high 12 points. From the moment the Bisons came out the gate, they hit — starting the first half with an 8-0 run completed by Cary, senior forward Parker Hazen and senior guard Romeao Ferguson. The Bisons finished the first half with a score of 50-27. Early into the second half, Cary stole one from the Pioneers and slammed it in for the Bisons, then Hazen swatted the ball again from the Pioneers, Cary retrieved it and passed it to Ferguson, scoring again for the Bisons. A little later into the second half, freshman guard Tanner Shulman hit a three for the Bisons and pushed their lead to the highest of the night, 72-39.
