Senior night for the Lipscomb women’s soccer team did not go as planned as they were shut out by Northern Kentucky Friday. Lipscomb attempted more than twice as many shots as NKU, but in the end had nothing to show for it, resulting in a 2-0 loss. Prior to the game, the Lady Bisons honored their three seniors: Karli Crosby, Baylee Linnell and Brittany Rupple. With conference tournament implications on the line, the stakes were very high. NKU’s Aubrey Muench opened the score in the 30th minute to give the Norse a 1-0 lead, then scored again in the 49th minute to seal the win. The Purple and Gold finish the regular season with a 10-6-2 record overall and 4-2-1 in conference. As it stands now, the Lady Bisons will likely head into the Atlantic Sun Tournament as the No. 2 seed, and will have a first round bye before taking on the winner between the No. 3 seed Jacksonville and No. 6 seed Kennesaw State. The two weekend, single-elimination tournament begins next Saturday, Nov. 1, and will conclude Sunday, Nov. 9 at Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Meyers, Fla. The Lady Bisons soccer team defended their home turf with a 1-0 victory against the Catamounts of Western Carolina University Friday night. Throughout the first half, the Lady Bisons kept the tempo high and their opponent on their heels with aggressive play that created many scoring opportunities, but score at the half remained 0-0. In the second half, Lipscomb showed great defense, and yet had a problem with offensively. The tempo picked up even more, with many close calls from both Lipscomb and Western Carolina. But, the results of the second half only matched what came from the first with both teams remaining scoreless at the end of regulation. With 10 extra minutes added for overtime, Western Carolina raised the intensity level, creating an onslaught of attempts to score and end the game. However, they were turned away with the determined defense of the Lady Bisons and sophomore goalie Anna Buhigas, who kept the show going. With the first additional 10 minutes ending up scoreless, there was a second 10 minute period added on. Both the Bisons and Catamounts were landlocked and could not find their way into the back of the net, until senior Baylee Linnell found fellow senior Brittany Rupple who then scorched a shot into the upper left corner of the goal past the outstretched arms of the Western Carolina goalkeeper Carly Tinstman. The Lipscomb women’s soccer team, with the encouragement and support of a new coaching staff, has planned its first spring break mission trip to El Salvador. The team will serve and share the Gospel with indigenous communities and knit a stronger bond between themselves. Assistant coach Chris Klotz has been in direct communication with the mission staff of Sports Outreach Institute, and they have set the trip to begin on March 15. Between now and then, Klotz will be leading team meetings and preparing the hearts and minds of players to accept and embrace the challenge. During a mission trip meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 20, Klotz asked the team to meditate on and pray about Biblical passage Romans 12, which tells Christians to become a living sacrifice for God, serving humbly with joy, faith and sincere love. “There is something very significant that happens to the culture of a team when they are focused on serving others,” Klotz said. “Through building relationships, experiencing a much different culture and realizing that God is bigger than the bubble we live in, it is my prayer that our team would become more unified in the purpose God has for us — to love Him and love others.” “I decided to go on the trip because I wanted to embrace this amazing opportunity God has provided – to travel to an area that isn’t as fortunate as we are here and to show His love to children that have been put in difficult living situations,” sophomore defenseman Brittany Rupple said.
