After losing its opener last week, the Lipscomb men’s tennis team practiced hard in preparation for the second match of the season. The Bisons’ efforts pulled through today and gave them a 7-0 win over Austin Peay University. The Bisons (1-1) took charge of the doubles play and won the doubles point, which started Lipscomb off with a lead against Austin Peay. Playing on the first line, Victor Chaw and Pablo Caffarena began their match with a lead against Austin Peay’s Almantas Ozelis and Anton Damberg. They refused to let the Governors duo catch up to them and kept scoring point after point until they pulled out the Bisons’ first win of 6-2 in doubles. “Me and Pablo are playing fantastic doubles,” Chaw said. “We have an amazing energy every point. I don’t think there’s any pair in the nation that plays with more intensity than us, and that’s why we dominate so much in doubles.” Francesco Tacconi and David Skrabut, playing on third, were leading but were unable to finish their match when Jorge Ortegon and Pedro Uribe, on second, won their 6-2 set against Timo Kiesslich and Jacob Lorino, clinching the doubles point for Lipscomb. Chaw also said that he thinks the Bisons have to improve matches week-by-week. “[The Bisons] aren’t really where [we] want to be…yet,” Chaw said. “If [we] keep improving the little stuff, by conference time [we] will be a very solid team but have to put in the work week-by-week.” With the aggressiveness and competitiveness that played out in doubles, the Lipscomb Bisons carried those emotions over to singles play. By Bridgette Begle, Brianne Welch and Cory Woodroof Students with Saturday classes or exams should prepare for tomorrow’s lectures and tests, as Lipscomb University is continuing business as normal. In an email sent to the student body, Assistant Vice President of Communication and Marketing Kim Chaudoin wrote that, as the university continues to watch the weekend’s weather reports, all Saturday events will continue as planned. “As you may be aware, winter weather — including ice and freezing rain — has affected areas in the western part of Tennessee,” Chaudoin wrote. “We continue to monitor the weather patterns as it relates to the Nashville area. “The latest update from the Nashville bureau of the National Weather Service is that we can expect rain and temperatures in the mid 30s through early evening. Tonight a mixture of rain and sleet is possible and will move out around midnight, with lows dropping into the mid-20s. Saturday will be cloudy with lows in the mid-30s with the possibility of rain. “As a result of this updated weather forecast, university offices, classes, exams and other events will operate on a normal schedule. Students and employees are expected to follow their normal schedules and routines.” A winter weather advisory has been issued for Davidson County from 4 p.m. Friday until midnight. Chaudoin notes that in the event of inclement weather, the university will follow the schedule disruption policy. No one knew for sure when the game would end. However, when it finally did, the Bisons were victorious. In the 67th meeting between the two teams, the Bisons were able to squeeze out a 104-101 victory against Austin Peay State University. It did not come easily, though. The game was tied 11 different times, and the largest lead by any team was nine points. That lead was part of an early first-half run by the Bisons. The largest APSU lead was seven. The Governors held a steady lead for most of the second half with a few ties here and there, but the Bisons could never get on top and steal the momentum away from them. That all changed when APSU missed two consecutive free throws with under seven seconds left, followed by senior Josh Slater taking the ball from one end of the court to the other for a game-tying layup. The score at the end of regulation was 87-87. Those 87 points were the most allowed by Lipscomb this season, and Coach Scott Sanderson let his players know that. “Obviously we needed to get a stop,” senior center Adnan Hodzic said. “They are a great team with great forwards that can penetrate, and we just had to get one stop and the game was ours.” The Bisons got that stop. An early miss by Austin Peay let the Bisons take an early lead when Hodzic scored the first points of overtime.
