The summer of 2014 has reached the halfway mark, and Nashville has had its full share of sports news in May and June. Here is a recap on what you may have missed. Lipscomb Baseball: Former Lipscomb baseball stars Rex Brothers and Caleb Joseph have been performing well in the MLB. Joseph, who was called up to the majors on May 7, hit his first home run on June 22 against the New York Yankees. After coming very close to making the MLB All Star team last summer, on June 14 Brothers became the first pitcher in Colorado Rockies history to pitch an “immaculate inning,” which means he struck out three batters on only nine pitches in the inning. Rex’s younger brother Hunter was drafted by his brother’s team, the Rockies, in the 30th round of the 2014 MLB draft. Brothers is currently pitching for the Grand Junction Rockies of the Pioneer League. Former Bisons Chris Nunn and Josh Smith are also currently playing in the Minor Leagues. Nunn is pitching for the Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League, while Josh Smith is suiting up for the Louisville Bats of the International League. Lipscomb Track and Field: The Lipscomb track and field team continued their run of success from the fall semester into the spring and concluded their triumphant run through the summer thanks to appearances at the NCAA Nationals by Gemikal Prude and Madi Talbert, as well as participation in the NCAA East Preliminaries by Prude, Talbert and Colin Dempster. The Lipscomb track and field team continued an excellent season this past week with three Bisons competing at the NCAA East Preliminaries. Junior Gemikal Prude and sophomores Colin Dempster and Madi Talbert traveled to Jacksonville for a chance to earn a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Finals. On Thursday, junior Colin Dempster set a new school record in the 400 meters with a time of 47.23 seconds. Dempster broke his own school record of 47.29 which he set during the Atlantic Sun Championships. Although he broke the school record, Dempster did not qualify for the NCAA Finals. Friday saw Talbert finish fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:08.21, good enough to send her to her second straight NCAA Outdoor Finals. Her time set a new school record as well. Prude, no stranger to national competition, became the second Bison to qualify for the Outdoor Finals on Saturday with an eighth place finish in the high jump thanks to a 2.14 mark. The spring semester may have ended two weeks ago for most students, but for spring athletics things have now just started to wrap up. For anyone that is a Bison fan, what an amazing spring it has been for all the athletes. The Lipscomb track and field team completed their Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships in Jacksonville, Florida, May 16 and 17th. Much like the whole year, many Bisons found success. Madi Talbert received first place in the 3000-meter race. Talbert finished with a time of 10:28.76 making her the record holder in the A-Sun outdoor 3000 meter, but it did not stop there for Talbert as she finished with the gold in the 5000 meters. Freshman Sally Larson also received first place in her 10,000 meter event. April Terry was covered in bronze as she threw the shot put 13.10 meters and the hammer throw with a distance of 50.29 meters, both for third place finishes. “I didn’t feel ready the week before the meet. I prayed and meditated, asking God to help me with my attitude,” April Terry said. “In the hammer, I fouled my first two throws and threw a short throw to get into the finals. The same happened in shot. I had to trust that God was going to work it out and believe that I could do it.” “This meet taught me about trusting God and about prayer,” Terry said. “When I look at the two metals that I won, I just have to give thanks to God.” Also, receiving third place was Kevin Floyd who cleared 4.63 meters in the pole vault. Success has been something that Lipscomb Track & Field has had a taste of this year and it’s 2014 Indoor Atlantic Sun Championship was no different. The indoor conference championship was held at the JDL Fast Track in North Carolina this year. The men finished with their best ever in third place beating their old record of finishing in fifth. The women finished fifth, tying their best ever. Junior Kenny Smith is a member of the 4×400 relay team that picked up first place at the meet and is a veteran when it comes to the team’s success. “I feel that every year the team fights more and more for each other. When I say that, we fight for every point we can get,” Smith said. “This season the men’s team got the most points we have ever got. It shows we are going in the right direction.” Smith, along with Tucker Peabody, Brian Gentry and Colin Dempster are the men’s 4×400 meter relay team. A team effort led to a time of 3:18.57. For the second year in a row, Peabody won the 200 meter dash and came in second place in the 60 meter dash. Two stand out freshman are Wayne Newman and Christian Freeman. Newman earned the 1st place title in 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.07. Freeman placed 3rd in the men’s 500 meter and 2nd in the men’s 300 meter. The Lipscomb track and field team is making their presence known after having just three indoor meets so far, they haven’t wasted any time breaking records this spring. Saturday, the Bisons competed in the TSU invite. The meet was not scored overall, but there were several individual victories. For the close-knit Bison team, individual records are celebrated throughout the team as if the whole team accomplished the goal. “Our team has so much love for each other,” Junior thrower April Terry said. “We support one another, and I think that’s a big reason for our success.” The meet started off on a good note for the Bisons. Senior Dani Walker began by taking first in the women’s mile and later on would take second in the women’s 800 meter. Annika Backlund, only a freshman, broke the indoor record in the women’s vault as she cleared 3.41 meters, and then with her next attempt cleared 3.56 meters winning the event. April Terry is yet again breaking records. She broke the indoor weight throw record with a throw at 16.92 meters. “I think our team is going to do wonderful this year,” Terry said. “We have a very talented freshmen class with a lot of talented returners to go with it.” Junior pole vaulter Kevin Floyd won the men’s pole vault with 4.32 meters, and freshman high jumper Sarah Wagner broke the record for women’s high jump with a jump of 1.63 meters.
