While there is still plenty of 2014 left to go, there has been one point of conversation that has dominated social media and beyond this year. “Who/what would be on the Mount Rushmore of (fill in the blank of a group of people, places or things)?” We here at Lumination have begun to ponder this very question about of the men and women who lead our classrooms at Lipscomb University every day, and we need your help. Who would you place on the Mount Rushmore of Lipscomb professors? Over the next two weeks or so, we would love for you to chime in with your four picks. The four professors who receive the most votes will fill in the four faces! If you’d like, you can offer a short blurb on why you chose the four professors that you did to be included in the post of winners. For example: I choose Dr. W, Dr. X, Dr. Y and Dr. Z for the Mount Rushmore of Lipscomb professors. Dr. Z is a friendly, energetic teacher who always impresses with her brilliant lectures and in-class demonstrations. She always is eager to help any students with problems they may have, and she even has a box of cookies on her desk for students to enjoy throughout the day. Lipscomb’s Department of Business presented its Entrepreneurial Pitch contest this week for students to present their business ideas to local entrepreneurs. Dr. Joe Ivey reported a great turnout at the preliminary Monday night competition, as well as a good showing at the Wednesday night finals. “The students have some extremely good ideas this year,” said Ivey. “We’re going to give these students some opportunities to win prizes, and we hope they’ll use these prizes to fund their ideas.” Students presented ideas ranging from a housing development powered by alternative energy to a website called dormads.com, which functions like an on-campus Craigslist. Bethany Hertrick won the non-profit category with her “international doll” idea, and Nate Underwood won the for-profit category with his food truck park. Each finalist received a cash prize, with both of the first place winners receiving $1,000 to put toward their business endeavors. “Basically, a food truck park will help solve the problem of connecting the customer to the truck,” Underwood said. “I want to do that through an actual location that food trucks can buy into with a membership fee.” Underwood said he also wants to have a web service that will allow the customer to preorder food and walk past the line to the front of the truck to pick up their order. Eight different entrepreneurs and businessmen from around Nashville judged the contests. The multicultural club Kappa Iota Theta is once again presenting Stomp Fest to the Lipscomb student body and this year the competition is expected to be fierce. This will be the second Stomp Fest that Lipscomb has had on campus and hopefully will become a tradition every year. Each social club will have the opportunity to represent their club with one of the greatest forms of creating sound with voice, hands and feet: stepping. Stomp Fest was inspired by the 07’movie Stomp the Yard, a definite go and see movie. This is a step competition that not only makes a social club look good to its peers, but also a time where the social club builds stronger relationships with each other. Stomp Fest is quickly approaching and those involved have practiced long hours almost every day to sound as one unit making one sound. Each group has at least five minutes to stomp, dance (some might say choreograph) and perform a skit to the judges and the student body in Collins Alumni.
