Padrino’s Pops provides tasty treats for passers-by

The Lipscomb community gets a new icy treat next door with Padrino’s Pops. The new paletas shop opened next to the Copper Kettle on Granny White Pike in March. “My family made Popsicles 25 years ago,” said Lorena Cantu, owner of the shop. “We want to make something fresh here in Tennessee.” Cantu wishes to follow her father Geronimo, who started making paletas, also known as Popsicles, in 1978. By following his footsteps, Cantu creates paletas made with fresh fruit daily. There are several choices to choose from once you walk into the colorful store. There’s two different types of paletas, cream or water based. A chalkboard menu is hung on the right wall and lists all the flavors that are available, from strawberries and cream, banana and even cucumber. Another specialty Padrino’s Pops provides is the Agua Fresca, a water and fruit drink that’s heavily popular in Mexico. “It’s like a smoothie without all the heavy cream,” said Lipscomb student Virginia Lodholz, who tried a sample of Piña Colada Agua Fresca. “It’s refreshing.” Cantu wishes to expand the love of the paletas and Agua Frescas. “We want to cater, and we want to open franchises,” Cantu said. “This is our first one, but we want to open more popsicles in Nashville and in other cities.” Visit their website for more...

SGA President Hunt shares SGA’s hopes, plans for year

One of Lipscomb’s Student Government Association’s aspirations is to help create an energized campus atmosphere every year. To SGA President Andrew Hunt, this year will hold plenty of exciting opportunities for LU students. “I feel like it is our responsibility to make sure students have a good experience,” said Hunt, a Corporate Management senior from Centerville, Tenn. “We are going to provide events . We want people to have fun, but we want to provide spiritually uplifting opportunities and academically challenging opportunities, too.” SGA is partnering with Residence Life and the Student Activities Board to bring bigger and better events to students on campus. Among this year’s anticipated events are Lipscomb’s annual Paint the Herd, a fall concert and a spring concert. “We can have a whole lot more events [if we partner with Residence Life and SAB],” Hunt said, affirming that the events can be of better quality with the partnership. “In the end, it’s not about if this is a SGA event,” Hunt said. “It’s about students having the opportunity to do this because SGA had a part in it.” Students can be looking forward to this semester’s fall concert with Dave Barnes, which will be on Oct. 1 in Collins Alumni Auditorium at 7 p.m. The spring headliner will be announced at a later date. First wave of off-campus dining locations revealed

The first list of off-campus dining locations was revealed Friday afternoon by Lipscomb Dining via their Twitter account (@LipscombUDining). The list included the Subway on Granny White Pike, the Sweet Cece’s on Hillsboro Pike, the Copper Kettle on Granny White Pike, The Well Coffeehouse on Richard Jones Rd., the Pizza Perfect on Granny White Pike, the Which Wich on Richard Jones Rd., the Kalamata’s on Portland Ave., the Sunset Grill on Belcourt Ave., the Nomzilla Sushi on Villa Pl. and the Jam Coffeehouse on Wedgewood Ave. It was indicated that more restaurants and locations will be added soon . Lipscomb Dining adds extra hours, off-campus possibilities for fall semester

Lipscomb Dining has cooked up a few new offerings for the fall, including the addition of an off-campus mean option and extra hours for dinner.  General Manager Wolcott Fary revealed that the dining hall will be adding extra hours to the schedule, meeting the request of many late-dining students. “Extending hours in the dining room: it hasn’t happened yet, but it will happen this fall,” Fary said. “The dining room will stay open an extra 30 minutes and will now be open every Saturday.” The dining room will now be open 7 days a week, and normal hours of operation will be from 7:15 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The long-talked about off-campus dining option is also now a reality, with the first wave of restaurants being commissioned for the fall. “Starting this fall, you’ll be able to use your Bison Bucks at certain local restaurants within a five-mile radius of the school,” Fary said. “The off-campus solutions team with Sodexo are in the process right now of going to more than 35 local restaurants to contract with them each individually to see if they want to become a part of the program. Each contract will be different, and there’s some outlay for the restaurants to become part of the program. Each restaurant will have to decide on its own whether it feels like it can get enough business to support the cost of maintaining the program.” No restaurants can be absolutely confirmed at this time, but Fary disclosed a few of the restaurants on the list, including Copper Kettle, Subway, The Cheesecake Factory and Nero’s Grill. Meal plan changes include redistribution of flex, unlimited meals

Students who complained about leaving too many flex dollars unspent at year’s end along with a survey that showed a desire for more options are in part responsible for Sodexo’s big changes planned for the new school year. “It was actually a collective decision,” said Wolcott Fary, Sodexo general manager, explaining that the changes “came partially from a survey that was done last year…the result being the addition of unlimited options and redirecting of the flex money and adding the dining dollars to get to a point where you had more options…that most likely would fit a broader range of students.” Students who are willing to sacrifice some of their flex dollars can sign up for one of three “Bison All Access” meal plans, which offer unlimited meals in the dining room along with flex dollars in the amount of either $400, $200 or $0, with the cheapest option. “The unlimited meal plans give students more flexibility in the dining room, thinking that the dining room is the primary usage area, and that’s where they’re going to take the bulk of their meals,” Fary said. “The dining dollars then, in place of the flex, give the students the opportunity to supplement their late hour needs for food and their Saturday needs for food when the dining room would either be closed, after hours, or typically on Saturday’s is not open at all.” Elizabeth Wilson, Sodexo’s marketing coordinator, said students, university officials and Sodexo were displeased with the old system which left students with too many unspent –and wasted – flex dollars at the end of the year. “That was...
