Journalism students take home AP college journalism awards

Several Lipscomb journalism students took away 2015 Tennessee AP college journalism awards at the John Seigenthaler Center on Saturday.  Lipscomb received nine awards in the competition. Lipscomb’s AP award winners include: Patrick Carpenter — 3rd place, Best Radio Sports Coverage/Program Brianne Welch, Cory Woodroof and Erin Turner — 2nd place, Best Online Multimedia Package Haleigh Ker — 2nd place, Best Radio Specialized/Topic Reporting Cory Woodroof — 3rd place, Best News Story Jamin Craig and Sarah McGee — 3rd place, Best Radio Newscast Janice Ng and Brianna Langley — honorable mention, Best TV Newscast Erin Turner — 3rd place, Best Online Multimedia Journalist Cory Woodroof — 2nd place, Best Online Multimedia Journalist Brianne Welch — 3rd place, Best TV...

Communication and journalism students win big at SEJC

Several Lipscomb communication and journalism students took away Best of South awards at the Southeast Journalism Conference in Atlanta, Georgia last weekend. Lipscomb took home 13 awards in the competition, which included representatives from more than 30 universities. Ernie Banks remembered for love of learning at Don Meyer Evening of Excellence

Ernie Banks, known as “Mr. Cub,” died Friday night at 83.  The Baseball Hall of Famer spent his 19-year MLB career with the Chicago Cubs, hitting 512 home runs. The legendary baseball player shared some of his wisdom with Lipscomb during the sixth annual Don Meyer Evening of Excellence. Here is former Lumination Editor-in-Chief Cory Woodroof’s story about Banks’ message last April. Baseball great Ernie Banks advocates learning, friendship at Don Meyer Evening of Excellence Just because someone is king of his craft doesn’t mean he’ll ever stop learning, and for one of sports’ most respected and successful individuals, learning is something that never ceases. At the sixth annual Don Meyer Evening of Excellence, Baseball Hall of Famer and legendary Chicago Cub Ernie Banks taught all in attendance at Allen Arena the values of the learning process. “I’m just a learning person,” Banks said. As a part of the event, attendees got the chance to learn a little bit about Banks’ past, hear about his interactions with some of baseball’s great players and take to heart some of the wisdom he shared in a conversation with Jonathan Seamon. Banks, 83, is one of baseball’s most admired individuals. An icon in Wrigley Field on Chicago’s north side, the man beloved as “Mr. Cub” has amassed a large number of honors. Not only is he a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. His Cubs’ jersey number was retired and there’s a statue in his honor at Wrigley Field. Welcome back, fellow Bisons! We’re excited to be back in full swing this spring semester. We were very sad to lose previous Editors-in-Chief Cory Woodroof and Logan Butts, but we are very excited to see where they go in the near future. For now, my name is Erin Turner and I am the new Editor-in-Chief. It is such an honor to follow in the footsteps of Woodroof, Butts and many other wonderful editors. I’m looking forward to carrying on the excellent work that they all did, and I’m very eager for our staff to grow. I’m so excited to share our new staff updates; we have some wonderful talent joining in on the fun. Janice Ng will continue her position as News Director of the Lumination News broadcast. Along her side is Assistant News Director Brianna Langley. As for the radio side of things, Haleigh Ker will continue her position as Program Director and Thomas Jones as Sports Director. For the website, Brianne Welch will continue her great work as Managing Editor, while Jesica Parsley and Erika Thornsberry continue their positions as co-Sports Editors. Following in my steps is Chief Staff Photographer Sam Webb. We have also recently brought on Lana Sydenstricker, who is our new Social Media Manager. We are looking forward to all the fun and excitement that this semester will bring.
