Lipscomb’s Lady Bisons cross-country team, which for a couple of weeks has been able to savor the A-Sun championship, now must turn the page and be ready for Saturday’s NCAA South Regional at the Harry Pritchett Course in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Regardless, they take a load of pride into the event. After the A-Sun title race, coach Bill Taylor had a big smile on his face. “We’ve had the best four weeks of practice I’ve ever seen. I gave each of them a plan to be successful and they followed it,” he said. Of course they didn’t have any time to slack off that work. Still, while they are moving on, these young women can reflect on their winning experience of that day of A-Sun glory. “Remember your ‘I wills,’ remember the sweat and tears you have put into this season. Remember your teammates and most of all remember to believe in yourself, because if you do that you are capable of anything.” This was what Amanda Twigg, a junior history education major from Cumberland, Md., said to a few of her teammates minutes before the 2011 A-Sun cross-country conference championship race started. Moments later the runners were off, running a race they will never forget. That Saturday morning, on their home Vaughn’s Gap course at Percy Warner Park, they won the 2011 Atlantic Sun title, with an accumulated score of 53 points, defeating defending champion North Florida by 16 points. Lipscomb cross-country runners say their work this season really paid off at the Atlantic Sun championships, but that they want to do even better in the future. Sophomore marketing major Priya Pappu expressed the team’s constant forward-thinking after its highest finish ever in the conference championship races in Spartanburg, S.C. “No matter how great we do individually or as a team, being the kind of people we are, we will never be completely satisfied,” Pappu said. Lipscomb placed second out of 11 teams. A fourth-place finish in 2008 was the highest previous finish for the Lipscomb team. The LU runners were: freshmen Alex Newby, Danielle Walker, Tessa Hoefle and Cortney Thomas; sophomores Shelby Marvel, Pappu, Ashton Fisher, Isaiah Greer, Tim Muller, Mike Yang, and Geoff Musick; and juniors Ashley Lehman, Louisa Van Batavia, Cathrine Beals, Hunter Hethcoat and Benton Reed. The A-Sun field included Belmont University, Campbell University, East Tennessee State University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Jacksonville University, Kennesaw State University, Lipscomb University, Mercer University, University of North Florida, University of South Carolina Upstate and Stetson University. “We constantly critique ourselves instead of simply being happy with our performance,” Pappu said.”We have an outstanding team that gives their all 100 percent of the time. Our season is not over; I just know that we will have our best race of the season at regionals this weekend.” Muller said that this wasn’t the boys’ best race. “It wasn’t the guys’ team’s day,” Muller said. “Bad races are just that–bad races. MACON, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun Conference recently concluded its annual fall meetings of athletics directors, senior woman administrators and faculty athletic representatives on the campus of Mercer University. Among the issues the membership approved were sites for future cross country and volleyball championships and format changes for the softball, soccer and tennis championships. The membership awarded future championships to Belmont, for cross country in 2011 and to Lipscomb, for volleyball, in 2011 and 2012. Belmont served as host of the 2004 Cross Country Championship and the meet returns to Nashville for the first time since Lipscomb hosted in 2007. Lipscomb will host volleyball for the first time but the event will return to Nashville for the third time since 2005. Belmont hosted in 2005 and 2006. Three tournaments will undergo changes to their respective formats. In softball, byes will be awarded to the top two seeds, beginning with the 2011 event at USC Upstate. Men’s soccer will return to a single-weekend event, to be played on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at a pre-determined location – beginning in 2011. Starting in 2012, the tennis championships will move to a Friday through Sunday format instead of the current Thursday-Saturday style. The conference announced new initiatives that will launch throughout the year, including an online store that will debut later this month, a renewed agreement with ASunPhotos.com, the creation of a new in-house marketing position, fresh championship marks and a monthly newsletter.
