The Buckeye State just couldn’t handle the Lipscomb Bisons softball team in the Courtyard by Marriott-Brentwood Purple and Gold Challenge this weekend at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium. After struggling the previous weekend, Lipscomb proved they could face adversity head on and make changes that need to be made. Lipscomb took the field on Saturday morning beating Akron 3-2. In the circle, junior Tanner Sanders had a personal game high with 10 strike-outs. Akron’s pitcher Erin Seller received the loss, making that her second of eight decisions for the year. With a total of three stolen bases, junior Brittany Elmore set a new personal single-game high and a team individual high. The team had a total of five stolen bases, with senior Gracey Aguirre and freshman Abby Fenichel both contributing. “My job on the offensive end is to get on base,” Elmore said. “While I’m on base it’s to put myself in the best position for my team to score me. Stealing bases is part of the process. I’m happy that I can contribute to my team in that way. I always push myself to do more to help the team in any way possible.” Later in the day, Lipscomb faced Dayton, keeping them scoreless. The Bisons finished the game up with a 3-0 win over the Flyers. The records continued to stack up for the Bisons as junior Kelly Young pitched her way to the win by striking out 11, making a new personal and team game high. The Lipscomb softball team won two games on Saturday to advance to the final day of the NCAA Knoxville Regional on the University of Tennessee’s campus. The Lady Bisons will have to beat the Tennessee Lady Vols twice on Sunday to advance to a super regional. Lipscomb eliminated Charleston Southern in the first game on Saturday. Freshman infielder Mimi Cartwright doubled to score sophomore infielder Brittany Elmore to give the Lady Bisons a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Elmore scored on junior infielder Paige Neely’s single up the middle. Lady Bisons had a 2-0 lead in the sixth. Charleston Southern tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom on the sixth. Lipscomb would strike again in the seventh off a solo homerun from senior infielder Kristen Sturdivant. Pinch runner Jordan Abell scored on freshman outfielder Dee Baddley’s single to give the Lady Bisons the 4-2 lead. Charleston Southern failed to score in the bottom of the seventh. Senior pitcher Ashley Anderson picked up her 20th win giving up six hits while striking out four. Lipscomb had a rematch against Virginia Tech in game two on Saturday. The Lady Bisons bats did not disappoint. Lipscomb recorded 12 hits and scored 12 runs. Senior infielder Haley Elliot hit two homeruns and had six RBIs. Junior outfielder Brianne Welch had a triple and an RBI. Senior infielder Bridgette Begle recorded a three hit game with an RBI. Elmore and Neely both had two hits. Elmore earned two RBIs. By Bridgette Begle and Erika Thornsberry With temperatures dropping into single digits in recent weeks, spring sports have seen little time outside on their fields, courts and courses. Tennis, golf, baseball and softball are being forced to share time inside as the winter weather continues to blow through. Senior golfer MacKenzy Carter says, “Being inside creates a disadvantage for us because we can’t actually hit off of real grass. The indoor mats and nets don’t allow us to actually see the ball flight and judge distance.” Golf uses the nets on the side of the court in McQuiddy while baseball and softball share time in the upper levels where the pitching mounds and two hitting cages are located. “Going from the field to a tiny space with only two cages limits space for the team to work together,” said sophomore softball player Tanner Sanders. Sanders is a pitcher for the Lady Bison and goes on to say, “The lighting inside [McQuiddy] is terrible. Therefore our pitchers cannot pitch live inside the cages. Not to mention we will also need a lot of work on defense before season begins which isn’t possible if we are inside.” Tennis is missing its outdoor courts because of the role that natural elements play in their game. “The biggest difference between indoor and outdoor tennis are the sun, the wind and the temperature,” says senior Stuart Tierney. “Outdoors you have to play with the elements.
