Lipscomb baseball takes weekend series against Georgetown

The Lipscomb baseball team took home the weekend series against Georgetown after a 4-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. After dropping the first game 8-5 on Friday night, the Bisons bounced back on Saturday afternoon to claim an 8-3 victory. With the win on Sunday, Lipscomb improved to 17-8 on the season and 2-1 against the Hoyas in the all-time series. Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand gave credit to Georgetown and said that this non-conference win should help the team heading into conference play. “Georgetown has a solid team; they are scrappy and hard to play against,” Forehand said. “This was a good series win for our club with conference play just a week away. Hopefully we can continue to build the momentum.” Several players contributed to win on the offensive end led by senior outfielder Jonathan Allison who went 3-for-3, including two RBI and one run scored. “We are beginning to expect that from Johnny [Allison] every time out,” Forehand said. “Hitting is difficult, but he is really swinging a good bat right now. When we get runners on base, everyone looks forward to him coming to the plate. He is producing every week, so hopefully he can continue that.” On the mound, junior right-hander Denton Norman held the Hoyas in check. He gave up just one run and four hits in eight and one-third innings of work. “It was a solid performance for Denton today,” Forehand said. “We always talk about how the starter can’t win us the game, but he can put us in a position to win, and that is exactly what we got from him...

Lipscomb baseball sweeps Quinnipiac in weekend series

The Lipscomb baseball team swept the games against Quinnipiac this weekend at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium.  Though the weekend got off to a rainy start, the Bisons won 5-0 in Friday night’s game. The Bisons brought their record 10-5 Saturday night when they won 9-4. As the rain cleared Sunday, the Bisons took a 3-1 victory. In Friday’s rainy matchup, neither team scored until the fifth inning, where the Bisons took the lead with two runs. Senior pitcher Ian Martinez-McGraw allowed only three hits from the Bobcats in eight scoreless frames. Freshman center fielder Michael Gigliotti made a leadoff double into left field just before running home to score in the sixth inning. In the seventh inning, the Bisons evened out the score with two insurance tallies. Lipscomb scored five runs in Friday’s matchup, marking the first time the Bisons have won without scoring seven runs this season. The Bisons returned to the diamond Saturday afternoon, where the Quinnipiac Bobcats took the lead with runs in the second and third innings. But Lipscomb responded with a two-run frame in the home half of the third. To get the Bisons’s offense started, senior second baseman Mike Korte and junior first baseman Adam Lee scored back-to-back solo home runs. Lipscomb took its first lead in the fourth inning after senior left fielder Jonathan Allison drew a lead-off walk. In the bottom of the fifth the Bobcats created a small rally after Mike Palladino knocked a two-out single to right. The Bisons responded taking the lead with a four-run frame. Lipscomb added its final run in the eighth inning. The clear sky and sun brought out another win...

Baseball team excited to find new identity in 2015 season

Leading in to the 2015 season, the Lipscomb Bisons baseball team will focus on the current team and not get caught up on last season’s success. The Bisons made it to the conference championship game in the 2014 season, only to fall short to Kennesaw State, but majority of the team returned with big ambitions for this season. “When you have a team that ended on a little bit of success, and the majority of that team is coming back, there was a little bit of momentum that’s come from the end of last season,” Head Coach Jeff Forehand said about the end of last season. Even though the team finished with more success than they have in past years, they are still not satisfied and want to look to go even further. Forehand mentioned one of the big differences from last year’s team and this year’s is that the 2014 team really had no expectations set for them.  “There really was no expectation [last year] because there hadn’t been anything prior to that, that we had done. I think that’s kind of a scary thing, that this year there are a few more expectations,” Forehand said. “Not that we’ve been picked to win or anything like that, but I think people have recognized how we ended and that we’re getting better, so there are some expectations this time.” Forehand said that he wants his team to focus on the present team’s identity. “I guess it is hard to kind of not think about last year since we did come so close, but I mean we got a whole new...

Bison baseball tops the conference with series win over Mercer

The Lipscomb Bisons baseball team took the series over the Mercer Bears this weekend and now sits in first place in the Atlantic Sun conference. After a rain delay on Friday, Lipscomb came out on top 4-2.    Mercer struck first with a solo home run by Sasha LaGarde but the Bisons punched back and were winning 2-1 after three innings.   Head Coach Jeff Forehand told Lipscomb Athletics that Friday’s game was just a good game between two good teams.     “Luckily for us we got some fortunate hits and scored when we had runners in scoring position,” Forehand said. “They made a mistake that gave us one run but it was just a good ball game all the way around.”   Saturday’s game resulted in a 2-1 victory for the Bisons to give them the series win. Junior John Allison earned a lead-off walk in first inning and would later score on a sacrifice fly from senior Drew Adams. Junior Grant Massey would also score in the first inning capping off the scoring for the Bisons for the rest of the game.   “It was a great first inning,” Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand said. “Drew and [Austin] Sistrunk had a couple of clutch, situational at-bats for us to get those runs on the board early. But we have to give Mercer credit because they pitched really well after that point to hold us in check. Both teams made some big plays throughout the game, but we were able to hold on for the win.”   Redshirt junior pitcher Hunter Brothers got the win giving up one run...

Bisons baseball swings for the sweep over ETSU

The Lipscomb Bisons completed a three game sweep of the East Tennessee State Buccaneers over the weekend. In game one the Bisons’ bats came alive pounding out sixteen hits. “When the hits start to spread from hitter to hitter, one guy feeds off the other. Good things happen,” head coach Jeff Forehand said. The offensive attack for the Bisons was lead by a 5-for-5 night at the plate by junior left fielder Josh Lee and a 3-for-4 game by junior center fielder Jonathan Allison. Allison hit a home run over the left field wall to give the Bisons an early 1-0 and later recorded a base-clearing triple that brought home two more runs. Allison finished the game with three RBI’s. ETSU did not go down easy. They responded to the 5-0 lead by adding two runs of their own to trim the margin to three. In the 7th inning ETSU closed the gap even more by adding five more runs, but the Bisons were able to hang on for the 9-7 win. In game two of the series, ETSU ran into a pitcher on a mission. Hunter Brothers pitched his first career complete game shut out. “When you get that performance that is all you need. He dominated from start to finish,” Forehand said. Junior shortstop Grant Massey lead the way offensively with a 4-for-4 day. He got the game started with a first inning triple to left and later scored on a RBI single. “Grant is one of the key components to this team. He is leading us on offense and defense but also with the spirit he brings...
