Lipscomb Men’s Soccer season comes to a close with a loss to No. 1 Jacksonville Dolphins

After defeating the Liberty Flames Saturday afternoon at home to clinch a spot in the ASUN semifinals, Lipscomb travelled to Jacksonville to take on the top-ranked ASUN team, Jacksonville, where the Bisons fell 4-2 Thursday afternoon. The Dolphins wasted no time putting together a strong offensive presence and capitalized by scoring three of their four goals within the first 25 minutes of the game. Both junior defenders Noah and Scott Gulden came up just shy of cutting into the Dolphins lead with two early shots on goal for the Bisons, but Jacksonville goalie junior Matt Levy came up with the save on both occasions. Finally, the Bisons got on the board with a late goal from freshman defender William Turner to end the first half and to bring Lipscomb back within striking distance. But the Dolphins once again were the first to score as they returned from the break extending their lead to 4-1. Freshman forward Tyrese Spicer gave the Bisons several chances but could never capitalize. Eventually, sophomore forward Alejandro Lopez scored bringing Lipscomb once again within two, but the early deficit proved to be too much to overcome. Despite the loss, Lipscomb outshot the Dolphins 19-11 and fought until the final whistle. The Bisons finish the season 6-5-2 and 1-2-1 in ASUN play in the COVID-altered format. Lipscomb holds off Jacksonville, stays perfect in ASUN play

Lipscomb has defended its home court well this season. The Bisons held again with an 86-77 victory over Jacksonville University Saturday at Allen Arena. The game started out with the fast pace and intensity that is customary to a Bisons team that leads the ASUN in points per game, and the team jumped out to an early four-point lead. It looked like Lipscomb (20-4, 11-0 ASUN) might cruise to another victory. The Dolphins (11-15, 4-7 ASUN) had other plans. Jacksonville would quickly tie the game up again. The Bisons tried to consistently change the lineup but could not find one that allowed them to open the half up. “We couldn’t get any real rhythm and make a run to extend the lead,” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said. “They were playing well; I felt like we just had to keep trying different combinations to see what would work the best.” From then on, the half was a back-and-forth affair, one that consisted of a total of 15 lead changes and five ties that lasted for over four-and-a-half minutes of game time. Near the end of a frustrating half for the Bisons, senior guard Garrison Mathews committed a technical foul directly after senior forward Eli Pepper had committed a personal. Jacksonville had the game tied up again after four free throws. Mathews, the leading scorer in the ASUN conference, had an otherwise quiet night by his standards. The Dolphins were able to keep him under control, as he shot 5-of-11 and totaled 16 points. Lipscomb jumped out to an eight-point lead coming out of the second half. The Bisons would never...

Lady Bisons fall in aggressive game against Jacksonville

The Lady Bisons fell to the Jacksonville Dolphins 75-63 Saturday afternoon in Allen Arena. The final five minutes turned in favor of the Dolphins as they suddenly rose to a ten-point lead over the Lady Bisons. “I thought we played very hard, we just had some breakdowns in key turns,” Lipscomb head coach Greg Brown said. The Lady Bisons came out strong in the first half and were leading 35-33 at halftime. Junior Danay Fothergill led the team, scoring twenty-three points total, 10 of which were free throws. “Danay did a great job and took advantage of the mismatches she had,” coach Brown said. Junior Ashley Southern followed by contributing 17 points to the final score, shooting multiple baskets in the paint. The team scored 75 percent of their free throws, resulting in 21 points. “We got them [the Dolphins] into foul trouble,” coach Brown said. Both teams came on to the court with high intensity and renewed energy during the second half. The Dolphins pushed outside the paint, sinking three-pointers and taking advantage of the foul line. The final three minutes were swamped with free throws from both teams. The excitement from the Jacksonville bench overthrew the competition, as the Dolphins shot 16 free throws within the final two. As the season is coming to a close, the Lady Bisons are 8-18 overall and 3-9 in the A-Sun Conference.
