The paintings done in Bison Square during resurrection week are a Lipscomb tradition, but for senior Shelby Smith there is more to enjoy than just the paintings. The tradition began during her freshman year when she didn’t even think she was supposed to be involved. “I actually thought they had the wrong person when Jake [Burton] asked me to do it,” Smith said. “I was like, ‘I’m not an art major. My last name’s Smith. You may have the wrong person.’ I was a freshman so I was second guessing everything.” Smith said she quickly realized that she loved doing the paintings — so much that she has done it each year. One of Smith’s favorite parts of participating is getting to interact with the student body in the square. “I paint once a year, for this,” Smith said. “When I’m out in the square people start talking to me, which is one of my favorite parts, which is funny because I’m an introvert, but I like getting to see all the people I know and meet new people who just come up and say nice things.” Four painters, including Smith, gather in the square at Lipscomb each year during the week of Easter to paint what this time means to them. Campus Ministry chose the 2015 theme to be “Journey to the Cross.” “The theme has something to do with [the paintings] every year,” Smith said. Lipscomb’s chapel office has scheduled daily activities to help students reflect on the last week of Jesus’ life, prior to the celebration of Easter next Sunday. Assistant Campus Minister Keela Evans said the staff wanted to create events that mirror the life of Christ each day of his last week on Earth. “We really wanted to walk through what the week leading up to the cross was,” she said. “We wanted it to be a teaching experience for our students, not just events, but letting them see the week leading up to Easter.” Evans said the campus ministry staff intentionally designed the events to give students an opportunity to experience Jesus. “There are some students on campus that don’t know Jesus at all and don’t believe, and we want to love them and honor them but share the gospel with them,” she said. “We want to really focus on community repentance. It’s not just about my sins, but it’s about us as a community walking toward the cross together.” Evans recognized that students who’ve gone to church their entire lives can find it difficult to deeply engage with annual holidays like Easter. She said she identified with that problem until a few years ago when her perspective changed. “This is the day we celebrate Jesus being absolutely free from the grave, free from death, beating death and being raised and resurrected,” she said, encouraging students to soak in the reality of Easter’s meaning. “It’s more about knowing that the Holy Spirit raised Jesus Christ himself from a murdered death. The early birds got the eggs when it came to this year’s Easter Egg hunt on Wednesday, March 31st. The students who came just one minute late missed their opportunity to hunt for prizes at this years Egg Hunt. Participants in the hunt scoured the grounds in front of the high school in under 60 seconds. The various eggs provided by Campus Life were filled with gift cards or candy. The eggs were collected at lightning speeds and only the empty shells were any indication that the event just took place. Many students exclaimed, “I got a gift card!”, while other egg hunters were just as happy with their candy. The Egg Hunt was a success, even the Easter Bunny was happy with her...
