We want to hear about your life–awkward moments, dumb jokes, embarrassing situations, inspiring thoughts or soap box speeches. Send it our way. The Fuss Forum is a student-generated column that allows you to complain, tell random short stories, applaud your friends, or say whatever you think the rest of campus should hear! Send your stuff to luminationnetwork@gmail.com and it could appear on the site. We’ll publish student content once a week in a post that includes all appropriate submissions we receive. Keep a few stipulations in mind when submitting content in order to make sure we can publish what you say. No swearing. No comments that would libel, slander, defame or degrade others. No falsified information or sensitive/private personal information about yourself or others. Don’t mention anyone specifically by using his or her name. At the age of six, I was a Star Wars kid. During the dog days of my early youth, the epic story of Luke Skywalker’s quest to defeat the Empire captivated me more than any other silly children’s entertainment. I proudly owned the original films on VHS. I collected a large group of action figures from the Star Wars universe – even those random aliens that only appeared in a frame or two during the cantina scene of A New Hope. I even saw The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi during their theatrical re-releases. So, obviously, May 19th, 1999 meant more to me than my birthday, Christmas, Easter, Halloween, or any other organized holiday that warrants a sort of reward or present. On this fateful day, writer/director George Lucas unveiled the first new Star Wars film in sixteen years. Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace changed my six year old world like nothing ever had. The spectacle, the action, the peril – everything collided to create a gigantic supernova of wonder and amazement. All those years of persistent enjoyment had paid off immensely. A few years passed, two more prequels made their way to the screen, and I couldn’t have been happier. Shift to this past week. George Lucas announced his retirement from the big budget film industry on the heels of his newest production, Red Tails. The first in a series, Lumination asks Lipscomb students what their thoughts are about the mascot change. This will be an ongoing series until the decision is made final. The following is written by senior biology major Alexander McMeen. Lets Go Bison. The Bison played great today. We are the Lipscomb Bison. Sounds strange doesn’t it? For all of you grammatically correct people out there, there is your correct usage of the word “Bison”. For all of us with feeling, the S is what adds the extra magic. We are the Lipscomb Bisons! Long before I was born we have been the Lipscomb Bisons. Some say it is incorrect. Others say it sounds funny. Some (Belmont) make fun of it for being different, but I find that more than ironic. For a University that prides itself on setting itself apart from others, giving in and changing our name to the Bison is crazy. Some say setting ourselves apart with the wrong form of the word is ignorant. I disagree. The word Bisons is being more and more recognized as a correct usage of the word. Even ESPN recognized it as a now correct usage of the word. Next year, it will be in the Merriam Websters dictionary, AS A WORD. What schools change their nicknames!? Some might say it is only an S, but to those who have been around Lipscomb, it is more than just an S. It is who we are. It is who our alumni are. It is whom I have grown up as.
