Nine Lumination Network staff members graduated with a degree in journalism and new media. Each of them played a major role in producing content for Lumination, as they have written stories for the website, worked on the TV newscast and been heard on the radio. Chad Johnson is a journalism and new media major from Edmond, Oklahoma. Alongside being on the men’s basketball team, Johnson was an anchor, reporter, writer and videographer for Lumination. Johnson said his favorite part about being involved in Lumination was getting to know everyone better. “It’s also allowed me to open up and show people another side of me while perfecting my journalism skills,” he said. Johnson said he plans to go to graduate school at Lipscomb, then eventually become an ESPN reporter or a sports journalist. “Mainly, just finding something I love doing and being happy,” he said. Erika Thornsberry is a broadcast and new media major with a minor in management from St. Marys, Ohio. Along with playing on and helping out with the women’s basketball team as well as interning with the Nashville Predators, she also has written for Lumination Network and been a part of the weekly newscasts. Thornsberry said her favorite part about the communication department is how close and caring everyone is. “Special thanks to Mr. McGee for helping me throughout these four years,” she said. “He helped me in the classroom, getting different jobs around campus and different internships. Welcome back, fellow Bisons! We’re excited to be back in full swing this spring semester. We were very sad to lose previous Editors-in-Chief Cory Woodroof and Logan Butts, but we are very excited to see where they go in the near future. For now, my name is Erin Turner and I am the new Editor-in-Chief. It is such an honor to follow in the footsteps of Woodroof, Butts and many other wonderful editors. I’m looking forward to carrying on the excellent work that they all did, and I’m very eager for our staff to grow. I’m so excited to share our new staff updates; we have some wonderful talent joining in on the fun. Janice Ng will continue her position as News Director of the Lumination News broadcast. Along her side is Assistant News Director Brianna Langley. As for the radio side of things, Haleigh Ker will continue her position as Program Director and Thomas Jones as Sports Director. For the website, Brianne Welch will continue her great work as Managing Editor, while Jesica Parsley and Erika Thornsberry continue their positions as co-Sports Editors. Following in my steps is Chief Staff Photographer Sam Webb. We have also recently brought on Lana Sydenstricker, who is our new Social Media Manager. We are looking forward to all the fun and excitement that this semester will bring. It’s the first week of October, and Gemikal Prude and Brianne Welch are behind the anchor’s desk, bringing you the latest national and local news. In Alabama, universities’ campus security have been getting surplus military equipment. Lumination’s Madeline Smith finds out why the universities are able to receive this equipment, and how Lipscomb is affected. Reports have also shown that public school student homelessness around the nation has risen for the past school year. Reporter Travis Byrd brings the issue closer to home, finding out how Nashville public schools are responding to the reports. The Gospel Music Association’s Dove Awards are coming back to Lipscomb’s Allen Arena for the second year. We show you who and what to expect for the ceremony. Here at Lipscomb, the new College of Entertainment and the Arts has students interested. Cory Woodroof gives you a look at what the college will encompass. By now you’ve probably heard of Destiny, the fantasy video game that has gamers hooked. Gemikal Prude does some digging to see what the appeal is for students. A new documentary, “In Plain Sight,” has been released. The film, which brings to light the issue of human trafficking, hits close to home, with Nashville being one the cities mentioned.
