Late goal from Wood seals Lipscomb win over ETSU

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb men’s soccer team earned an enthralling 2-1 win over the East Tennessee State Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon. The afternoon was a chilly one, as flutters of snow fell at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex as a backdrop to a fiery matchup. The ETSU Bucs traveled from Johnson City with only victory in mind, but Ryan Dougherty quickly set the visitors back a peg. The junior midfielder from Pennsylvania put away a free kick after just six minutes to give Lipscomb their third game-opening goal in their first three matches. Dougherty’s unassisted goal was his first of the season. ETSU responded well, but a stout defensive line from Lipscomb kept the Bucs out of the net until 30 minutes in, when senior defender Austin Bilhmeyer set up senior forward Jared Leheta for the equalizer. The Montreal man put ETSU back on level terms, a scoreline that would hold for the rest of the half. It was a clean first half, but the yellow cards came out in droves from the onset of the second half. Within just 18 seconds, South African junior midfielder Luto Tom received the game’s first disciplinary action, the first of four yellow cards over the course of the game for the Bucs. Meanwhile, Lipscomb accrued three yellows via sophomore defensive midfielder Thomas Priest, sophomore attacking midfielder Alejandro Lopez, and freshman forward Javanne Smith, last week’s recipient of two National Player of the Week honors. Outside of fouls, it was a less eventful second half of play, with one exception being a long-range effort from Lopez. The Costa Rican nearly gave Lipscomb a second...

Lipscomb Men’s Soccer shuts out UAH to open their season 2-0

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb men’s soccer team won 3-0 at home against the University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers Tuesday evening. After a 3-1 win over Evansville to start their 2021 campaign, the Bisons kept the offense coming against UAH, a Division II squad from the Gulf South Conference who will not count the game as an official part of their season record. Despite Lipscomb’s higher division status, the Bisons came into the contest winless in the all-time series between the schools. The Chargers were 3-0 against the Bisons before tonight, winning the last contest versus Lipscomb all the way back in 2003. An early goal helped the Bisons shake off their previous struggles against the Chargers. In the 8th minute, sophomore forward Alejandro Lopez took a cross from ASUN Preseason Defender of the Year junior Noah Gulden into the box. Lopez shimmied his way into a shooting position and sent it towards the far post, where first-time starter freshman forward Austin Marfell found himself with a tap-in for his first goal as a Bison. Marfell featured in last weekend’s opener with 30 minutes of playing time, but on a night that delivered him a first start and a first goal for the Purple and Gold, he will likely see this one as his favorite of the two this season. His early goal would prove to be the only one of the half, as UAH played a tight half defensively despite having few chances in the attack. Lipscomb successfully manhandled the midfield in a similar fashion to Saturday’s win over Evansville, in large part due to the presence of...

Lady Bisons use Lipscomb Invitational as preparation for A-Sun slate

The Lady Bison Volleyball team fought hard throughout the Lipscomb Invitational, but came up short in the end. In the last match of the tournament, the Lady Bisons faced the Utes of Utah. The Pac-12 team beat Georgia Tech in three sets and ETSU in three, but Lipscomb took the Utes to four sets. The team lost the first two sets right out of the gate. The first set 25-18 and the second 25-17, but going into the locker room head coach Brandon Rosenthal had a talk with his team to get them prepared for set three. “There was a talk with the team. There’s an expectation that they’ve set, and it’s their responsibility to go after it,” Rosenthal said. Following the first two sets, the Lady Bisons came out on fire to win the third set 25-15 becoming the first team in the tournament to take Utah to four sets. Despite their efforts, the Lady Bisons came up three points short in the final set losing 25-22; however, Rosenthal was pleased with the effort from his team. “The talk after the match was just, hey I like what I saw,” Rosenthal said. “There is no chewing out or what not, well there was a little chewing out between two and three, but after the match, I mean, they gave me everything they had there in two and three, and that’s all you can ask for, and I’m really pleased with that.” At the end of the match, the Lady Bisons had more kills than the Utes, but were out-blocked. Brittnay Estes led the team with 13 kills in...

Lady Bisons lose home opener

The Lady Bisons volleyball team struggled to keep pace with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in their home opener, resulting in a three-set loss. After a slow start, the Purple and Gold showed some promise in the last two sets, but ultimately it was not enough to overcome. The loss ended the Lady Bisons six-game winning streak. Head coach Brandon Rosenthal was disappointed with his team’s lack of focus and passion. “I didn’t think we came with that same drive and passion,” Rosenthal said. “I felt like tonight we were trying to manufacture it (energy), instead of it coming from the heart.” While Rosenthal was not happy with the playing of his team, he did recognize the strong play from the Hilltoppers. “More than anything, it’s a matter of playing our brand of volleyball, we didn’t do that tonight,” Rosenthal added. “A lot of that had to do with what Western Kentucky did.” Western Kentucky blitzed Lipscomb in the first set, 25 to 11, then went on to take the final two sets, 25 to 20. “Western Kentucky is a good team,” Rosenthal said. “They played some disciplined volleyball and unfortunately we paid for it.” Already without middle blocker Jewell Dobson, LUV was also without libero Bri McCombs. McCombs was a game-time decision. “Any time you are filling in for multiple players it makes it tough,” Rosenthal said. “But by the same token it gives other players opportunities.” The Lady Bisons return to Allen Arena this weekend to host the Lipscomb Invitational. They open with Georgia Tech on Friday night at 6:30 p.m., then take on in-state foe ETSU on Saturday afternoon at 12:30. Lady Bisons get series against ETSU

The Lady Bisons softball team got the sweep over ETSU this past weekend at Draper Diamond. Lipscomb run-ruled the Bucs in both games of the double header Saturday. The first game ended after five innings with a score of 9-0. Game two ended after five innings as well with a score of 10-1. The Lady Bisons combined for 18 hits, three home runs, two doubles and a triple in Saturday’s games. Senior infielder Kristen Sturdivant, senior catcher Rena’ Cothron and junior outfielder Brianne Welch all got to trot around the bases. “We hit extremely well in the beginning of the season, and it’s not like we’re hitting bad now, but to get so many hits this weekend is great for the team,” Welch said. “I expect our hits to keep coming the rest of the season.” Part three of the series on Sunday proved to be a closer game. ETSU got one across in the top of the first, but the Lady Bisons answered in the bottom half. Sophomore outfielder/infielder Brittany Elmore led off with a double, then scored on an ETSU error to tie the game 1-1. In the fifth inning, Elmore and junior infielder Paige Neely both reached on hit by pitches. Senior infielder Kelsey Cartwright blasted a three-run home run, which ended up being the difference in the game. The Bucs scored one more run in the sixth. The Lady Bisons finished the sweep 4-2. Sunday’s game was also “Strike Out Cancer” day to help bring awareness for breast cancer. The Lady Bisons wore pink jerseys, and the first 100 fans received a free pink t-shirt. “Having...
