Power Rangers come out on top in ‘Jolly Dodger’ dodgeball tournament

The Power Rangers rarely, if ever, have been defeated by their opposition, and Friday night was no different…kind of. In the annual Lipscomb dodgeball tournament (this year’s theme being the pirate-influenced “Jolly Dodger”), Team “Power Rangers” defeated “Lipscomb Volleyball” in an epic championship held in the Fanning Hall courtyard Friday night. Senior Ben Ashley explained what was going through his head during the final one-on-one showdown. “Honestly, I was just thinking, ‘This is the end, this is it. But after it’s all over, I’m still going to have a blast because we’re all friends’,” Ashley said. Part of the show included the teams’ theme and costumes. Sophomore Cedric Duncan explains how they came up with the idea for Power Rangers. “We had several ideas at first,” Duncan said. “Husband Housewives was the original one, but decided to go with the Power Rangers.” Created with Admarket’s flickrSLiDR. En route to their championship, they beat the defending champions, “Team Belmont.” “Everybody wanted us to beat them, so it felt  great to come out on top,” Duncan added. However, the fun didn’t stop there. Since it was Halloween, students had the chance to win $100 for the best costume. Via crowd vote, the winner was a student dressed as Batman. While the competition was fierce, many teams like the Power Rangers were in the tournament to have fun and entertain the crowd. “We had a plan up until the second round, but we weren’t thinking in terms of championship,” Ashley said. “We just wanted to put on a good show.” Carousel photo and gallery credit: Erin...

Former Vanderbilt athlete makes unflattering accusations about Lipscomb

Details of underage drinking, fighting, racism and sex at a party on the Lipscomb campus in a former Vanderbilt basketball player’s upcoming “tell-all” book are not being overlooked by Lipscomb officials. “I don’t believe that this party happened, but I want to be real as a university,” said Sam Smith, associate dean of Campus Life. The claims are in former Vanderbilt University point guard Kyle Fuller’s book “Below the Rim.” An excerpt of the book was released recently in the Vanderbilt Hustler. The Tennessean has reported that the book, scheduled to be released next summer, is 40 percent completed. In the book’s first chapter, called “Dixieland,” the basketball player writes about this alleged party, and his account includes claims that the apartment hosting the party had alcohol, racist posters and “down” girls. Smith said he doesn’t believe the tale. Still, he said, “If this happened we need to take serious looks of what is going on. So we’re asking questions, but it’s still a very, very tough pill to swallow that this is really a possibility of something that happened on our campus.” The details in Fuller’s account are what makes the story unbelivable, according to members of the Lipscomb community. When it first was released, the chapter “Dixieland” claimed the party took place in Fanning Hall, despite Fanning being an all-girls dorm with very strict rules about visitors of the opposite sex. The story was later changed to say that the party took place in apartment-style housing, which was inferred to be The Village. “The problem with The Village is that there’s only one dorm a fight could...

Water in Fanning Hall returns early Tuesday morning after pipe burst, temporary water shutdown expected later Tuesday

Update: Water returned to Fanning Hall late last night (estimated around 3:30 a.m. or so), but a temporary shutdown is expected today as further repairs are expected.  Below is an email sent to hall residents by Sain. “Our amazing facilities team just left our building at 3:30am this morning. The broken pipe fixture has been temporarily fixed and will be permanently fixed tomorrow when the proper parts can be located.  In order for the repair to made tomorrow the water will have to be turned off for a short time. Please be patient as the repairs are made and more than anything please thank our facilities workers, Sam and Chad for temporary fix so that we can have water. I am so sorry for the disruption in our evening with this issue and appreciate your great attitudes.” Previous story below. Residents of Fanning Hall will be without running water for the meantime after a pipe burst in a suite. “Tonight we had a pipe burst in the bathroom on the third floor in suite 307 around 11pm,” Fanning RHD Laurie Sain wrote in an email to dorm residents. “In order to stop the water from flooding any more suites, the water to the entire building had to be turned off,” Sain wrote. The pipes sent water down the staircase and into the courtyard. A dorm-wide evacuation did not occur, but the residents in suite 207 are residing in the RA’s suite for the night. The water in the entire building has been shut off as of now to avoid flooding in anymore suites. “The plumber is on his way to assess the pipe and hopefully fix it...
