Nashville university students join hands for MLK Day of Service

Students from all over Nashville joined hands in a service-filled day to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Over 300 volunteers from Belmont, Fisk, Lipscomb, Tennessee State, Trevecca and Vanderbilt teamed up for MLK Day of Service on Saturday. Dr. King believed that anyone could serve. He revolutionized the society he was living in with values that are still relevant today. The day of service provided students with an opportunity to reflect on those values that Dr. King stood for. Students met at TSU to fellowship and kick off the day. The universities partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank, Feed the Children, Project C.U.R.E., Habitat ReStore and Soles4Souls. One group helped to alleviate hunger in Middle Tennessee by sorting through food, while other groups sorted through shoes, medical supplies and recycled materials. For Christin Shatzer, Lipscomb’s SALT Program director, it is a tradition for Lipscomb students serve, especially during the MLK weekend. “For the last number of years, it has always been multi-university collaborative initiative,” Shatzer said. “Given the themes of the holiday we are celebrating, it’s great for us to have collaboration across the different campuses.” Though some students were not familiar with each other, they joined together to make an impact on the community and recognized that as a whole, they are a part of something much larger. “Even though it’s 2015, a lot of the things that we are reminded of as we celebrate MLK Day are just as relevant as ever, if maybe not more pressing than ever,” Shatzer...

Lipscomb to make MLK Day of Service a weeklong event

Service and change is the focus for the Lipscomb community as students and faculty remember the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. Lipscomb’s multicultural organization Kappa Iota Theta will host “Change for Change!,” a weeklong change drive. Students can bring their extra change to the student center front desk to help purchase school supplies for the Youth Life Learning Center. “The Change for Change drive is a great example of how small change can add up and make such a big difference,” said Elizabeth Hayes, Intercultural Engagement and Development administrative assistant. “We want students to remember that sometimes, it’s the small deeds that are truly impactful.” Students from Lipscomb, Belmont, Fisk, Vanderbilt, Tennessee State and Trevecca will come together at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, in Tennessee State University’s Kean Hall to kick off the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Students will have several opportunities to choose from, including helping to paint McKissack Middle School, sorting food at Second Harvest Food Bank, painting a mural at Hadley Park Community Center, sorting medical supplies at Project C.U.R.E. and helping the Christian Women’s Job Corps of Middle Tennessee move to their new location. “The MLK Day of Service is a significant event in that it’s one of the only times in which all the universities come together, and it’s really exciting to see that vision that MLK had of serving, that everybody can serve,” SALT program coordinator Cara Harris said. “And I think just the way [students] take some time to come together and learn about why they’re doing it, that’s what makes it a unique service opportunity for Lipscomb...

Lady Bisons’ win propels team to regular season

The Lady Bisons defeated the Fisk Lady Bulldogs in the second and final exhibition game in Allen Arena Wednesday afternoon. Lipscomb got on the board first with a jump shot by sophomore Alex Banks. The Lady Bisons never looked back. The final score was 83-66. Four players scored in double digits for the Lady Bisons while Ashley Southern and Faith LeGate each posted a double-double. Southern, a redshirt sophomore from Tuscumbia, Ala., led the way with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Banks finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Junior Sara Bliss had six assists on the night. All 10 players that are healthy got several minutes of playing time and all scored points in the game. “There are a lot of girls that haven’t played in a college game, so it’s good to see them get comfortable on the court and calm their nerves before the actual season starts,” Banks said. Stevonna Scott, the Fisk junior from Chattanooga, Tenn., led the game with 35 points. Rebounds were the key for Lipscomb. The Lady Bisons grabbed 54 rebounds with 20 of them being offensive. “We just crashed the boards as hard as we could which is what Coach jams into our minds every single day,” Banks said. Coach Don Meyer was in the stands and talked to the Lady Bisons after the game. “We all love Coach Meyer like he is our coach, and he is so wise,” Banks said. “It’s so great getting to talk to him.” The Lady Bisons begin regular season on Nov. 10 against Morehead State in Allen Arena. The game will be streamed on...

With plenty of new faces, the women’s basketball team is ready for new season

By Brianne Welch and Jesica Parsley Four transfers and five freshman bring a new dynamic to the Lady Bison Basketball team’s 2013-2014 season. Beginning his second year as head coach, Greg Brown has seen great development in the young team during the pre-season while teaching the four transfers and five freshmen the Lady Bison dynamics. “We are teaching the basic dynamics and breaking habits of the new girls,” Brown said. “But we have seen all the players develop to what we are trying to do across the board.” With so many new faces on the court, the team dynamic is different, but the players are embracing the new team. “I think we’re definitely clicking,” redshirt sophomore Danay Fothergill said. “Coming from the summer to now we know each other’s tendencies and strong points. We are getting to know each other on the floor better.” The flow between the girls as well as the team connection will drive them through a season that has already deemed the Lady Bisons the “underdog”. “I think it’s cool to be the underdog,” Fothergill said. “Our mindset is, you all have no idea what we’re about to do.” Coach Brown says he is pushing the team to be a little better every day in order to be in the best position to perform well and come out on the winning side. “We always tell them we can prepare you but then competing is what you do in the game,” Brown said. “We have to get better every day, play hard and play smart. That’s what we want people to see and if we do...

Women’s basketball team set to take on Tennessee, Kentucky in upcoming season

The Lipscomb women’s basketball team has officially released their 2013-2014 schedule, which includes a December trip up to Knoxville to take on the Lady Volunteers. Nine of the teams in Lipscomb’s schedule are post season teams from last year. “We have set up a challenging schedule for our team,” Brown told Lipscomb Athletics. “It will give us some experiences in great environments while preparing us for the Atlantic Sun season.” To start the year, Lipscomb’s Women’s basketball team is scheduled to play in two exhibition games against Freed-Hardeman (Oct. 28) and Fisk (Nov. 6). The Lady Bisons jump into the regular season against Morehead State on Nov. 10. This year’s installment of the Battle of the Boulevard is set for Nov. 14 at Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons will look to avenge their 70-54 home loss to Belmont from last year. The Lady Bisons are also set to play three SEC powerhouses this seasons. They play Kentucky in Lexington on Nov. 21. Less than a month later, the team returns to Athens, Ga., to take on the Lady Bulldogs again this year on Dec. 17. Lipscomb then travels to Rocky Top to face Tennessee, a team that the Lady Bisons have never played, on Dec. 29. “It is always great to play the Kentucky’s and the Tennessee’s. They are great models of excellence and where we are working to get to,” Brown said. The team start their conference play in Johnson City, Tenn., against ETSU on Jan. 2. Later in the month of January, the Lady Bisons face 2012-2013’s A-Sun Champion Stetson University at home on Jan. 30. That meeting will...
