Lady Bisons finish season sweep over Bellarmine to stay perfect at home

The Lady Bisons pulled out another home victory on Sunday night against the Bellarmine Knights. They remained undefeated at home on the young season, led by a career-high 28 point performance from sophomore guard Jaylyn Holcomb. Though the first matchup saw an even performances across the lineup from the Bisons on Saturday afternoon, with all five starters scoring in double figures, Sunday night saw Holcomb come away with everything on the floor. The 5’9″ sophomore from Murfreesboro shot a steller 11-15 (73%) from the floor. The beginning of the game started right where the Lady Bisons left off their previous performance with threes coming all around. On the opponent’s side, things got off to a rough start as the Knights only put up 10 points in the first quarter, six of which came from senior guard Tasia Jeffries. After one quarter, Lipscomb led 21-10. However, the 2nd quarter saw a scoring drought for the Lady Bisons who missed all their three-point attempts. Seemingly trading places, Bellarmine shot 4-5 from the beyond the arc late in the 2nd quarter and went on a 17-8 run cutting the Lipscomb lead from 13 to just 5 with only 59 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Going into halftime though Lipscomb still held the lead 33-28. The two teams came out of halftime at seemingly the same clip. Lipscomb shooting 7-14 from the field 2-5 from three, and Bellarmine 8-15 from the field and 2-5 from three. Knights would get within one possession of the Bisons, but a three point deficit would be as close as they could get, as they were never...
13 threes help Lipscomb pull away from FGCU

13 threes help Lipscomb pull away from FGCU

The Florida Gulf Coast men’s basketball team has undergone significant personnel changes since dropping a 108-96 contest to Lipscomb in the ASUN title game last March. But the result was the same Thursday night. Lipscomb (15-4, 6-0 ASUN) used 13 three-pointers to pull away from the Eagles for an 89-81 victory at Allen Arena. “It was nice to find a way [to win],” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said. “I give FGCU a lot of credit – they played tough. But we had some experienced guys make some experienced plays, and that turned out to be the difference.” Senior guard Garrison Mathews went for 31 points, and he hit six of Lipscomb’s 13 threes. Matt Rose added a trio of three-pointers, while Nathan Moran and Michael Buckland each had two apiece. Mathews’ outing was his best since scoring 29 points at Middle Tennessee on Dec. 1. “[Garrison] wanted the ball and he delivered,” Alexander said. “He got to the line, he made tough twos, he made big threes. It was a complete game for him.” Mathews and Moran hit back-to-back threes with just 1:23 remaining to take an 81-73 lead and prevent any hope of an FGCU comeback. “All of us were knocking down shots tonight,” Mathews said. “Nate hit that big-time three at the end that really kind of sealed the deal. I was just fortunate to knock some down.” The offseason was not kind to the Eagles (7-14, 2-4 ASUN). Coach Joe Dooley left for East Carolina, reigning ASUN Player of the Year Brandon Goodwin graduated and went to the NBA and Zach Johnson transferred to Miami, leaving...

The Lipscomb men’s basketball team continued to steamroll through the ASUN as the Bisons grabbed an 86-57 win over the Kennesaw State Owls in Allen Arena Monday night. The Owls (3-17, 0-5 ASUN) kept things a bit too close for comfort for Lipscomb at first, but the Bisons (14-4, 5-0 ASUN) broke away in the second half to stay perfect in conference play. “[You’ve] gotta be prepared for everything,” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said. “And I felt like our guys handled the game where we never really played with great rhythm but still [won] by 29.” Read Spencer Boehme’s full recap here. Lipscomb baseball sets eyes on A-Sun Championship with No. 5 FGCU

After a season-ending sweep of Northern Kentucky last weekend, Lipscomb’s baseball team is primed for taking on the 2015 Atlantic Sun Conference Baseball Championship. The Bisons are in Fort Myers, Florida, where they will take on No. 5 seeded Florida Gulf Coast. This sweep of the Norse last weekend at Northern Kentucky’s Bill Aker Complex boosted team spirits heading into the A-Sun, according to Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand. “After a tough weekend against Stetson last week and then another one on Tuesday, it is good to see us get back on track with these three wins,” Forehand said. Lipscomb grabbed the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament after Stetson lost to tournament hosts FGCU in the final weekend of the regular season. The Bisons have won a record-breaking 35 games in the regular season. Going back to the NAIA days, no Lipscomb team has matched that victory total. Forehand said he has hopes for the Bisons to slug it out for their second A-Sun tournament championship. He also said that in so doing, the team could make the NCAA tournament for only the second time in school history (the last being in 2008). The coach said the Bisons’ bats and pitching arms were kept plenty busy — and looked plenty good — in completing that sweep last Saturday. “It is fun to watch us when we are attacking with all facets of our offense and the pitching staff is throwing as well as they are,” Forehand said after the 7-1 victory. The Bisons will now open the tournament at 6 p.m. Wednesday night at Swanson Stadium. It’s a tough task...

Lipscomb softball sweeps weekend series, seniors reflect on season

Lipscomb softball swept the three-game series against conference foe Kennesaw State with a victory of 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium. The Lady Bisons took a 1-0 win in Saturday’s first game and 13-1 win in the second. During the last home series of the season there was a senior celebration with the class that’s been the most successful in Lipscomb softball history. Seniors Jordan Abell, Paige Neely, Laura Dukes, Brianne Welch and Gracey Aguirre received praise from their teammates and coaches on individual success and how they have positively impacted the team. “I can’t believe this is it,” Welch said. “It’s so hard for me to really believe that this will be the last time I get to suit up with these girls and compete at this field.” “I’ve played this very sport since I was four years old,” Aguirre said. “And these girls — I’ve grown so much with them and because of them, and I know for a fact that they will have a lasting impact on my life.” But the celebrations of the seniors didn’t stop them from coming out to compete in Sunday’s game. Kennesaw was kept far away from home plate, and at the bottom of the third Neely hit a single into left field bringing junior Brittany Elmore in to score. Dukes hit a homer in the next inning to make the score 2-0. In the fifth inning, a throwing error allowed the Lady Owls to reach home to make it a 2-1 score, still in the favor of Lipscomb. At the bottom of the fifth, Aguirre hit Neely...
