Lipscomb staff provide for students through inclement weather

Lipscomb University experienced its first real winter weather of 2015, which brought the usually active campus almost to a standstill. On Feb. 16, Tennessee was declared to be in a state of emergency forcing local shops, restaurants and University’s to close until roads were safe to drive on. Students on and off-campus were stranded, or forced to be, what felt like, held captive in their own houses and dorm rooms, which made the demand for food on campus a lot higher than normal. Sophomore Starbucks worker Eric Scheide explained how hectic those few days were. “We were the only downstairs food service that was open, so the cancelled class days were very busy and stressful at times.” “Thanks to a great group of workers, we managed to stay on top of the work load, and hopefully it kept our customers happy,” Scheide said. Lipscomb cancelled classes on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday morning and Friday afternoon during the week of Feb. 16. When classes are cancelled, whether it be due to treacherous weather or some other emergency, the entire campus cannot come to a halt. During this most recent class interference, many behind the scenes staff began working even harder to make sure students were made comfortable. Throughout the week, Lipscomb’s campus services and security, Sodexo food services and Starbucks staff remained on campus, and even with a limited staff, they were able to make it a successful week. Fall fiesta celebrates Hispanic heritage

A fall festival held in Shamblin Theater on Wednesday celebrated all things Latino. The event, organized by the Lipscomb chapter of Futuro, included dancing, karaoke and plenty of Hispanic food. “Fall Fiesta has been our biggest campus-wide event,”  junior education major Adriana Leon said. “It gives Futuro a way to make itself known on campus. It’s just one of the most exciting things.” Sophomore nursing major Jocelyne Lopez was also involved in the planning. “I was in charge of catering, so I called restaurants and had to go pick food up. I got Puerto Rican food, Mexican food and Central American food. Just a variety of Latino food!” Lipscomb students lined up for the food, which included dishes like horchata, flan, mocha tres leches cake and Jarritos Mexican soda. Attendees also had the opportunity to hit a piñata and take pictures at the photo booth. Sophomore financial management major David Villacorta said the event was in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sep. 15 to Oct. 15. “I’m from Tegucigalpa, Honduras,” Villacorta said. “I feel really proud about being Hispanic. I’m proud of being what I am and I’m proud of celebrating this.” Lopez pointed out how exciting this kind of event is for the Hispanic culture. “I think it’s really special and great for us to be able to do this on campus,” Lopez said, “That way we can share our culture with others.” The students in Futuro hope to have another big celebration in the spring and will also be involved in other cultural events like Lipscomb’s International fashion show. “Especially at a school like Lipscomb, where...

Longtime Lipscomb favorite Pizza Perfect Kebob closes

Pizza Perfect Kebob, a favorite pizza shop for many in the Lipscomb community, closed its doors last Saturday after 30 years of business. In a note to patrons, the restaurant announced that the shop owners will be retiring from Pizza Perfect Kebob. “Since opening, we have served a lot of Pizza’s and made many friends,” the note read. “Many of our customers and employees have become like family to us and we love you all!!! “After much consideration and prayers, we are announcing our retirement from Pizza Perfect Kebob.” Below is the full note distributed to vendors. Since opening, we have served a lot of Pizza’s and made many friends. Many of our customers and employees have become like family to us and we love you all!!! Lipscomb’s executive chef tops Belmont counterpart in “Battle of the Chefs”

While the first Battle of the Boulevard has yet to tip off, one battle has already been won.  For the first time in a while, Lipscomb and Belmont’s chef clashed in the Battle of the Chefs on Thursday in the Bison Cafe. Lipscomb’s Executive Chef Anthony Bates won the competition, defeating Belmont’s executive chef William Finnegan by a slim margin. The event was held the day before the Bisons and the Bruins play in Allen Arena in the first Battle of the Boulevard this season. James Perry, Sodexo’s District Marketing Manager, said that the event is more of a friendly contest. “It’s meant to [be] a friendly competition between the chefs,” Perry said. “It’s meant to educate people that these are professional chefs.” Perry said that “Battle of the Chefs” is a normal thing for Sodexo accounts, which both Lipscomb and Belmont are. “Belmont and Lipscomb, both Sodexo accounts, have been doing this for years; we just brought it back,” Perry said.               Photo credit: Whitney...

Lipscomb Dining chips in a few new changes to on-campus locations

Lipscomb Dining may not be promoting any new restaurants or redesigns for the fall semester, but a few developments here and there have solidified the idea that campus’ dining department is always open to change.  Dining General Manager Wolcott Fary says that not much is different at the Bennett Campus Center food court this semester, but he did have a few updates to share. For example, popular dining spot Far East Fusion has undergone a few adjustments. “It used to be that they would pack everything into a bowl, stick it in the window and that would be it,” Fary said. Fary said that he supplied Far East Fusion with new steam equipment to freshen the food. He also explained that the restaurant will now serve fresh food, and the students can order what they want. Because of this change, business for Far East Fusion has doubled, according to Fary. While Blue Coast Burrito and Papa John’s have only utilized occasional specials, Chick-fil-A has added new salads. But, one item that won’t be arriving at Chick-fil-A anytime soon are the legendary milkshakes. Fary said that because the Chick-fil-A at Lipscomb  is technically an express store, the corporate office decides what should be served at express stores. Therefore, unless the corporate office includes milkshakes in the express restaurants’ menus, the well-loved dessert won’t be coming to campus. Fary said that Zebi is doing fine, but Auntie Anne’s has slowed down measurably from last year’s hype.
