Lipscomb’s School of Music gets in tune with Nashville’s music industry

What has recently become its own school will also have its very own new contemporary music program. Lipscomb’s School of Music recently announced the expansion of its existing classical music offerings to include contemporary music undergraduate programs, which will dive into songwriting and music production. This charge first began after Lipscomb formed its College of Entertainment and the Arts that houses the new school. School of Music director Sally Reid said that the idea of having a College of Entertainment and the Arts, and even the School of Music, have been in the works for a while. “At some point the president [Lipscomb President Randy Lowry] intervened and said ‘this really sounds like a new college,'” Reid said. After the new college was formed, Lipscomb’s filmmaker-in-residence Steve Taylor had a connection that made the contemporary music program come to life. “Steve had this really good friend who was at a point in his career where he was looking to give back,” Reid said. Producer and singer-songwriter Charlie Peacock will serve as Lipscomb’s artist-in-residence for the contemporary music program. “I really think that we couldn’t launch out and do this without his guidance, because none of the faculty are trained in contemporary music or have any experience,” Reid said. “We needed new faculty, and we needed someone who understands the music industry.” And Peacock has demonstrated his understanding of the music industry ever since he started his career in the ’70s, producing hundreds of albums. Padrino’s Pops provides tasty treats for passers-by

The Lipscomb community gets a new icy treat next door with Padrino’s Pops. The new paletas shop opened next to the Copper Kettle on Granny White Pike in March. “My family made Popsicles 25 years ago,” said Lorena Cantu, owner of the shop. “We want to make something fresh here in Tennessee.” Cantu wishes to follow her father Geronimo, who started making paletas, also known as Popsicles, in 1978. By following his footsteps, Cantu creates paletas made with fresh fruit daily. There are several choices to choose from once you walk into the colorful store. There’s two different types of paletas, cream or water based. A chalkboard menu is hung on the right wall and lists all the flavors that are available, from strawberries and cream, banana and even cucumber. Another specialty Padrino’s Pops provides is the Agua Fresca, a water and fruit drink that’s heavily popular in Mexico. “It’s like a smoothie without all the heavy cream,” said Lipscomb student Virginia Lodholz, who tried a sample of Piña Colada Agua Fresca. “It’s refreshing.” Cantu wishes to expand the love of the paletas and Agua Frescas. “We want to cater, and we want to open franchises,” Cantu said. “This is our first one, but we want to open more popsicles in Nashville and in other cities.” Visit their website for more...

Longtime Lipscomb favorite Pizza Perfect Kebob closes

Pizza Perfect Kebob, a favorite pizza shop for many in the Lipscomb community, closed its doors last Saturday after 30 years of business. In a note to patrons, the restaurant announced that the shop owners will be retiring from Pizza Perfect Kebob. “Since opening, we have served a lot of Pizza’s and made many friends,” the note read. “Many of our customers and employees have become like family to us and we love you all!!! “After much consideration and prayers, we are announcing our retirement from Pizza Perfect Kebob.” Below is the full note distributed to vendors. Since opening, we have served a lot of Pizza’s and made many friends. Many of our customers and employees have become like family to us and we love you all!!!
