Game date, time announced for Lipscomb-NC State NIT quarterfinal

The Lipscomb men’s basketball team is heading back to North Carolina for the third time in the NIT. North Carolina State beat Harvard 78-77 Sunday night to advance to the tournament quarterfinals. The Wolfpack will host the Bisons on Wednesday, March 27 in Reynolds Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. CT on ESPNU. The winner of Wednesday’s battle will advance to the NIT Final Four, which will be played in New York City’s Madison Square Garden on April 2 and 4. Lipscomb (27-7) returned to Nashville Saturday night after handing UNCG an 86-69 defeat in Greensboro Coliseum. The Bisons also took down Davidson 89-81 in the first round last Tuesday. The team traveled to and from North Carolina on charter flights for both games. Before escaping with a one-point win over the Crimson in the second round, NC State opened the NIT with an 84-78 victory over Hofstra on March 19. The Wolfpack (24-11) narrowly missed the NCAA tournament despite finishing No. 32 in the NET rankings. The NCAA selection committee cited NC State’s 3-9 Quadrant 1 record as the main reason it was left out. NC State is led in scoring by three experienced guards, including senior Torin Dorn (13.5 PPG), junior Markell Johnson (12.4 PPG) and redshirt junior CJ Bryce (11.5 PPG). Tickets are $15 and can be requested by clicking HERE. Reynolds Coliseum seats just 5,600 fans, so tickets are expected to go quickly. The NC State-Harvard game was sold out Sunday...

Lipscomb trounces UNCG to advance to NIT quarterfinals

GREENSBORO, N.C – Road games simply don’t bother the Lipscomb men’s basketball team. In front of a mostly-hostile Greensboro Coliseum crowd, the Bisons delivered a dominant performance in an 86-69 blowout of UNCG Saturday in the NIT. The Bisons will play the winner of NC State-Harvard on Wednesday, March 27 in the tournament quarterfinals. Lipscomb continued to add to its NCAA Division I-era road win record with its 13th of the season. The Bisons had 10 road wins last season, but they eclipsed that mark with an 87-75 victory over North Alabama on March 1. “I don’t know what it is,” Lipscomb senior Garrison Mathews said of playing on the road. “It’s a good feeling that we can come [play] in front of the great crowd that [UNCG] had and play well.” Mathews and fellow senior Rob Marberry were at their best against the Spartans. Marberry led the way with 24 points on 12-of-13 shooting, while Mathews produced a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds. The Spartans jumped out to an early lead behind the hot hands of senior Francis Alonso and junior Isaiah Miller. But Lipscomb made 10 of its final 11 shots in the first half to take a 43-35 advantage into the break. After Mathews made a three with 1:38 remaining in the first, the Bisons never relinquished their lead. Much of that run was thanks to crisp passing – including a long runner from Marberry to Nathan Moran to end the half with a layup and a 10-2 run. Lipscomb finished with 20 assists to UNCG’s seven. “Any time that we can get a bunch...

Lipscomb receives top national ranking

Lipscomb University has been ranked as one of the top Christian universities in the nation according to the 2015 Niche Ranking. The Best Christian Colleges ranking includes 288 Christian colleges in the country, with Lipscomb ranking in at No. 23. Lipscomb was also listed as the top Christian university in the state of Tennessee. These rankings have been based on 50 statistics and ratings from thousands of surveyed students. This is not the first time Lipscomb has received recognition for its high standards and distinctions. In December 2014, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance named Lipscomb on its list of best values in private universities for 2015. This listing is the first time Lipscomb has been among other top schools in the nation, such as Harvard, Vanderbilt and Duke. Students come to Lipscomb for many reasons — for some it’s the faith aspect, academic quality and community feel. Junior Anna Lail from Charlotte, North Carolina said that she has experienced transforming moments through Lipscomb. “I had a life changing experience on a mission trip to Haiti and knew I needed to change my life’s path,” Lail said. “Knowing that Lipscomb is in the top 25 in the country has made me realize I made the right decision switching schools and majoring in theology.” For freshman Joel Cottrill from Columbus, Ohio, Lipscomb’s location and spiritual emphasis were huge decision-making factors. “My main objective in finding a college was that it was in the South and Christian,” Cottrill said. “My brother goes here and I knew spiritually that Lipscomb would be perfect for me and I’m happy with my choice. “Lipscomb was also my first choice as I...

Lipscomb recognized for superior veteran services, affordability

Lipscomb has been recognized for its commitment to veterans and for its affordability. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance recently named Lipscomb University in its list of the top hundred best value private colleges in the nation, and Military Advanced Education has named Lipscomb a top military-friendly university. MAE awards this distinction to the hundred top-scoring colleges participating in a questionnaire about the quality of schools’ veteran service programs. Factors on the questionnaire include support for veterans’ families, campus ROTC programs, counselor training in military-related mental health issues and acceptance of transfer credits. Other schools on the list include Vanderbilt, Auburn and UCLA. “It is a reflection of our goal to continually improve our veteran services program,” said Assistant Dean and Director of Veteran Services April Herrington. “Recognition from organizations such as this is an indicator that what we offer is working and making a difference in the lives of our students.” Lipscomb’s veteran services have previously been recognized in the 201 Military Friendly Schools list for six years in a row and as the second-best regional university in the South for its veteran services by US News & World Report. Lipscomb has been providing free undergraduate tuition to veterans through its Yellow Ribbon Program since 2009. For the first time, Lipscomb’s affordability for veterans and other students has been recognized by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. Other colleges named in the list include Harvard, Duke, Princeton and Vanderbilt. The list compares quality-based criteria such as admission rates, freshman retention rates and student-faculty ratios to finance-based criteria such as financial aid and average student debt at graduation. “Student debt load is a critical issue...

Lady Bisons finish 0-2 at Georgia Tech Holiday Tournament

The Christmas break gave the Lady Bison basketball team a chance to get some rest, but the team still came up short in the Georgia Tech Holiday Tournament. The Lady Bisons travelled down to Atlanta where they first played the host, Georgia Tech on Dec. 29. After the first half of the game, the Lady Bisons were only down by 11 points; however, in the second half Georgia Tech scored 32 points to come away with the 71-53 win. Ashley Southern had her 26th career double-double and fourth of the year. The Lady Bisons were perfect from the free throw line, but only shot one free throw the entire game. Georgia Tech was 42.9 percent from the field while Lipscomb was just 36.2 percent. Just a day after the loss to Georgia Tech, the Lady Bisons had to refocus and prepare to play Harvard on Dec. 30. The game against Harvard was different than the game against the Yellow Jackets. The Lady Bisons did not come out as strong in the first half. The team allowed Harvard to get ahead 41-22 in the first half before finally losing 84-63. The Lady Bisons were neck-in-neck with Harvard in terms of scoring in the second half. Lipscomb scored 41 points to Harvard’s 43. Despite the loss, the Lady Bisons had four players score in double figures. Chandler Cooper and Ashley Southern each had 14 points, Sara Bliss had 11 points and Danay Fothergill had 10. By the end of the game the Lady Bisons were shooting 42.1 percent from the field to Harvard’s 45.2 percent. The Lady Bisons come home to...
