Volleyball uses successful season as platform for A-Sun Tournament

With a 3-0 sweep of USC Upstate and 3-1 victory over Kennesaw State University last weekend, the lady Bisons clinched the regular season championship and with it secured the No. 1 seed heading into the Atlantic Sun Tournament. Head coach Brandon Rosenthal knew that something was different with the team this year with heir attitude towards the game and outlook on winning. “Going to Kansas and beating Kansas, going to Missouri and beating Missouri and Illinois State,” Rosenthal said, “It was just one of those years where everybody believed and it was special.” Injuries and illness plagued the team towards the start of the season, but they found a way to fight back and end conference play 13-1. Rosenthal said that it’s not necessarily about the talent but the character. Over a quarter of the team are seniors this year and their leadership was apparent in each and every game they played during the regular season. “We talked at the beginning of the year about leaving a legacy, and that has nothing to do with wins and losses, it has everything to do with who you are,” said Rosenthal. “These girls, led by our seniors have done that.” Rosenthal mentioned when you have a season like theirs you expect to win every match you go into and there’s definitely an expectation of going into the tournament and winning. “I don’t think there’s any surprise for us or for anyone else that we want to do this,” said Rosenthal. “We aren’t going to win every set 25-0, we know they’re going to push us.” The Lady Bisons went 20-7 overall...
Bisons finish sweep over ISU

Bisons finish sweep over ISU

The Bisons finished the three game sweep against the Redbirds of Illinois State on Saturday at Ken Dugan Field. GAME ONE Lipscomb took control of the Diamond during game one, defeating ISU by a score of 8-1. The Bisons got off to a fast start in game 1. In the bottom of the first Tyler and Lee Wilson both hit singles to get on base and Andrew Nickerson was able to bring them home with a deep shot that one hopped off the left field fence. The game stayed at 2-0 until the top of the third when the Redbirds scored what would be their only run of the game when Kevin Tokarski took the first pitch from Lipscomb’s Davey Hackett to deep left field for a solo home run. This would be Hackett’s only blemish of the game. While Hackett did give up five hits and walked four he limited the Redbirds to only 1 run. After five scoreless innings from ISU’s Ryan Copeland the Bison’s caught fire in the bottom of the seventh when Shawn Mehring hit a triple to deep center field. He then scored on an errant pitch by Copeland. Brett Teschner was then walked, followed by an M.L. Williams double on a grounder that snuck in between the third baseman and the shortstop. Tyler Wilson then followed with a double that scored both Teschner and Williams to put the Bison’s on top 5-1. Chad Fromm would come into the game in the eighth inning in relief for Hackett. Fromm finished the game for the Bisons after pitching two scoreless innings. Lipscomb added three more...

Smith strikes out 15 on way to win over Illinois State

Senior pitcher Josh Smith threw his second complete game of the season on Friday night.  Smith allowed one run on 7 hits on his way to a 5-3 win over the Redbirds of Illinois State. Friday night the Bisons opened up their weekend series with the Redbirds of Illinois State. Josh Smith made his sixth start of the season.  Smith, 4-1 on the year, was coming off of a season-high 15-strikeout game. Smith would not disappoint in this outing either.  Throwing  nine complete innings , Smith allowed one run on seven hits. Smith walked one and struck out 15, again. Illinois State came into the game with a 12-10 record.  The Redbirds had won seven out of their last nine. It was very important for Lipscomb to keep SIU off the bases.  Coming into Friday night’s game the Redbirds had 47 stolen bases, nearly surpassing their total from all of last season. The Bisons gave Smith an early cushion in the first.  Zach Messer drove in freshman Lee Wilson on a beautifully executed hit-and-run.  Messer drove a fastball right up the middle as Wilson was attempting to steal second. After three shutout innings from Smith, Lipscomb added another run.  Senior Tyler Wilson singled up the middle to score M.L. Williams.  Lee Wilson and Corey Hale also scored later in the inning. The Redbirds answered in the fourth scoring one run on two hits. Smith struggled in the sixth, allowing two runs on three hits.  Smith got out of the inning on his own though, striking out a Redbird for the third out of the inning.  The strikeout was Smith’s...
