Several Lipscomb journalism students took away 2015 Tennessee AP college journalism awards at the John Seigenthaler Center on Saturday. Lipscomb received nine awards in the competition. Welcome back, fellow Bisons! We’re excited to be back in full swing this spring semester. We were very sad to lose previous Editors-in-Chief Cory Woodroof and Logan Butts, but we are very excited to see where they go in the near future. For now, my name is Erin Turner and I am the new Editor-in-Chief. It is such an honor to follow in the footsteps of Woodroof, Butts and many other wonderful editors. I’m looking forward to carrying on the excellent work that they all did, and I’m very eager for our staff to grow. I’m so excited to share our new staff updates; we have some wonderful talent joining in on the fun. Janice Ng will continue her position as News Director of the Lumination News broadcast. Along her side is Assistant News Director Brianna Langley. As for the radio side of things, Haleigh Ker will continue her position as Program Director and Thomas Jones as Sports Director. For the website, Brianne Welch will continue her great work as Managing Editor, while Jesica Parsley and Erika Thornsberry continue their positions as co-Sports Editors. Following in my steps is Chief Staff Photographer Sam Webb. We have also recently brought on Lana Sydenstricker, who is our new Social Media Manager. We are looking forward to all the fun and excitement that this semester will bring. As you may have already noticed, my name is Logan Butts and I am taking over as the Editor-in-Chief of Lumination for the fall semester. I am following in the footsteps of many great editors including the most recent and longest holder of the position Cory Woodroof. Cory taught me almost everything I know about running a news site, so all complaints regarding my performance in the position should be sent to him. On a serious note, my goal is to continue and build upon the great successes of the former Editors-in-Chief while also putting my own unique spin on the position. I was not the only person to be handed the keys to a branch of Lumination for this semester. Janice Ng will be taking over as News Director of the Lumination News broadcast. If her time as Assistant News Director is any indication, I know she will be successful in the role. Thomas Jones will continue his role as the Program Director of Lumination Radio. Be sure to listen to his show, Sports60, and all the other programs on Lumination Radio. As for the Lumiantion website staff, we lost many great seniors to graduation in the spring, but we also have plenty of great writers and editors returning or joining the staff this fall. Brianne Welch will continue to put in great work as one of our managing editors, while our staff photographer Erin Turner will be joining her in the role. As the old cliché goes, all good things must come to an end. On Sunday, July 20, it will be time for me to say a goodbye to all of you, the readers of Lumination – at least in a sense. On that day, I will pass along one of the greatest batons I’ve ever had the chance to carry – the title of Lumination’s Editor-in-Chief. When I took over the position in December of 2012, I really had no idea what to expect. By that point, being editor of Lumination had been one of the main goals I hoped to achieve as a college student. Through all of the experiences I had while working as editor, I can safely say that the days between the one where I took over Lumination to the one where I publish this note have been some of the most important, rewarding days of my life. My time as editor has been a whirlwind of big stories, triumphant Bisons victories, crushing Bisons defeats, fascinating Lipscomb developments and mundane-yet-necessary updates. It’s consisted of late nights in the newsroom, good laughs with friends on staff, precious naps at home and hordes of emails in the inbox. I’ve had to make hard decisions in hard times and applaud brilliant work in times of great joy. Simply put, this has been one of the most hectic-yet-irreplaceable times of my life – one that cannot hold a price but would be worth its weight in gold to relive. The life of a one-day NBC/Lipscomb student runner does not actually involve a lot of running. In my short time helping out the NBC Nightly News crew, I got tasked with all manner of things to help the on-the-road broadcast happen. The clock read 10:25 a.m. There was no thermometer in the room, but I could gauge the temperature. It was roughly 80 degrees, and beads of perspiration could be seen on people’s foreheads. It was discussed that a fan should be procured, and I should be the one to fetch it, and so I did. I placed the fan in the very office where anchor Brian Williams would soon be stationed. At precisely 11 a.m., I pointed out the nearest restroom to an NBC employee. “Do you know where the closest restroom is,” the employee asked. “It’ll be right over there,” I said while pointing expertly in the general direction of the restroom. The employee was grateful. At 12:30 p.m., an NBC photographer needed to get footage of Lipscomb’s campus, and I was the chosen one to drive him around in a golf cart. “You,” an NBC employee pointed to me and said, “You’re a student, yes? So you would know all the pretty places around campus?” “Yes, I am and I do,” I said. “Great. You can take our photographer around campus to get some shots.” The next hour was spent chit-chatting with the photographer as he got his shots, telling my beginnings and background as a student journalist at Lipscomb, and hearing about his career.
