Lipscomb University hosted former Atlanta Braves superstar Fred McGriff during its annual First Pitch Dinner on Saturday. Jonathan Seamon, the ESPN+ play-by-play man for the Bisons, emceed the event. He also interviewed Lipscomb baseball coach Jeff Forehand, alongside the team’s senior players, as they anticipated the upcoming 2019 season. Bisons’ head coach Jeff Forehand said that the dinner, which featured a live auction and encouraged fan donations, “was definitely a good night for us as far as raising a few dollars to help” the team and its facilities. The event began with a time of socialization, light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments, and then everyone sat down and ate a complimentary dinner with current players. McGriff injects humor, wisdom and reflection during his interview McGriff started off with an anecdote about how his 10th grade high school baseball team released him. “When [people] see my baseball coach around town, they’re like, ‘Dude, you cut Fred McGriff!'” he said. McGriff played 19 years in the MLB, including five with Atlanta. He was with the Braves during their 1995 World Series victory. “[The] Braves had always made the playoffs and were trying to get over the hump and win a World Series,” McGriff said. “So it was always the pressure on the guys to finally come through and win a World Series.” He finished his career with a .284 batting average, 1,550 RBIs and 493 home runs, per Baseball Reference. Lipscomb may have beaten Kennesaw State in an extra inning 4-3 victory Friday night, but the Owls answered back in the final two games of the series at Ken Dugan Field in Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. The first game of the series came with a walk-off win for the Bisons courtesy of senior Josh Lee. Lee hit the walk-off double in the bottom of the tenth inning. Freshman Jeffrey Crisan had an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, and senior Jonathan Allison had two RBI’s in the bottom of the first and third. Lipscomb was hoping to carry the momentum from the first game into the rest of the series. In the second game on Saturday afternoon, the Owls answered back, defeating the Bisons 4-3. Senior Mike Korte had two RBI’s in the second and seventh innings. KSU had three runs scored in the fifth due to RBI’s by Alex Liquori and Grant Williams. An error by Lipscomb second baseman Korte also contributed to the Owl’s scoring. Liquori had an RBI single in the top of the eighth for the Owls. Junior Chucky Vazquez tried to get something going for Lipscomb in the bottom of the ninth by hitting a solo home run, but Lipscomb could not tack on any more runs. The Bisons were looking for a better result in the final game on Sunday. The final game of the series resulted in a 12-5 Owls victory. Thanks to an error from the Belmont catcher in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Bisons won the Battle of the Boulevard 10-9 on Tuesday night at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. Sophomore Hunter Hanks scored the winning run for the Bisons after freshman Tyler Brown put the ball into play, forcing Belmont catcher Alec Diamond to hurry his throw. The ball sailed past the first baseman giving Lipscomb the victory. The hit by Brown was his first walk-off of the season. “I was honestly caught in the moment,” Brown said. “It was my first walk-off, and I had a great time. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates.” Brown was the designated hitter for the Bisons, but that didn’t cause him to feel any more pressure than normal during hit at-bat. “It is my role on the team this year,” Brown said. “I had to stay calm and do my job.” Belmont jumped on the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning, but Lipscomb answered with three runs. The Bisons scored two runs in the bottom of the third with a big hit from senior Jonathan Allison. Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand called a double steal that brought freshman Michael Gigliotti home from third. Lipscomb scored two more runs after sacrifice flies from Allison and Gigliotti. The Bison baseball team won the series with Xavier over the weekend, but Xavier took the Sunday game 5-1. On Friday night Lipscomb played small ball as senior Jonathon Allison and redshirt freshman Allan Hooker both had run scoring singles in the bottom of the first inning. It was not until the top of the sixth that Xavier center fielder Brian Bruening hit a two run homer for the Musketeers, the only two runs scored by Xavier. Lipscomb scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, with a RBI single from senior Grant Massey and an insurance run provided by redshirt junior Adam Lee. The Bisons final tally of the game came with a run scoring double from freshman Jeffrey Crisan. The second game of the series, resulted in an 11-1 win for Lipscomb. Xavier started the third inning with a run that ended up being their only score of the game. Lipscomb answered right back, scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the third. In the bottom of the fourth, Lipscomb had a lead-off homerun by Allison. The Bisons had a big inning in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs, and senior Grant Massey started it with a two-run scoring double. Allison provided a run scoring double, and Hooker provided a RBI triple. Hooker also scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch. The Lipscomb baseball team defeated Tennessee Tech 7-1 on the rainy Tuesday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. The Bisons were down 1-0 early, due to a home run by the Golden Eagles’ designated hitter Ryan Flick. This run by Flick was the only one Tennessee Tech got the entire game. But it didn’t take long for Lipscomb to answer with a run-scoring double by senior Jonathan Allison in the bottom of the third. The tie of 1-1 didn’t break until the bottom of the fifth. Lipscomb freshman Jeffrey Crisan helped break the tie by getting a sacrifice fly to right field. He was not the only freshman to have a good day at the plate. Freshman Michael Gigliotti had three runs and said that getting those runs and RBI’s were all about his mindset. “Bunting to me is religious,” Gigliotti said. “I work on bunting as much as hitting. When you have speed, it is a great tool to get on base and score some runs.” Gigliotti now has six bunt base hits on the season. Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand said that he was proud of Gigliotti’s and the other team member’s contributions, whether it was on the field or at the plate.
