Bisons earn third win in a row

The Lipscomb men’s soccer team won for the third time in a row Saturday night in a 3-1 victory over Longwood. This was a bye week for Lipscomb in terms of conference play, which offered the Bisons a chance to experiment with different strategies in preparation for the end of Atlantic Sun play. “I think a bye week is not a bad thing,” Bisons head coach Charles Morrow said. “For us it is an opportunity, you have questions arise halfway through the season, things you aren’t willing to risk in a conference game.” Morrow believes having the non-conference game scheduled allows them to try things that they cannot in a conference match during the season. “With the substitutions being the way they are it just doesn’t lend itself to try new things. Being able to try something new or switch personnel around in a bye week is good,” Morrow said. Lipscomb struck first in the match when freshman Jonathan Ramirez kicked in a left side goal off of a cross from fellow freshman Ivan Alvarado in the 38th minute. Just 15 minutes later, Lipscomb Junior Anthony Cedano scored his third goal of the season with a persistent play from the right side. Cedano was assisted by junior Josue Chavez. In the 54th minute, less than a minute after Cedano scored, Longwood was called for a foul in the Lipscomb box and senior Luke Gearin was able to capitalize on the penalty kick, tallying his eighth score of the season and putting lipscomb up 3-0. Longwood made it onto the board at 73:24 when Dan Campos took a free kick...

Men’s soccer defeats Memphis in thrilling 4-3 victory

In a matchup that featured two teams with only one loss apiece so far in 2014, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team came out on top against the Memphis Tigers 4-3. The Bisons hardnosed defense left Memphis on the edge of their seat early in the first half. 12 minutes into the first half, the Memphis Tigers placed one in the back of the net that deflected off of the crossbar and then the goalkeeper’s back. The score was capped off with quite the celebration, that ended in a bit of embarrassment as Memphis’ Hector Cantele slipped and fell as he ran into the crowd. With 14 minutes left in the first half, a turnover lead to a quick score by Raul Gonzalez, bringing the score to 2-0. The sense of urgency went up tremendously on both sides, and six minutes after Memphis’ second score, the Bisons acquired a breakaway pass that led to a goal from freshman Jonathan Ramirez, Lipscomb’s first score of the game. With a pass from junior Anthony Cedano (his second assist of the game), junior Josue Chavez tied up the score at 2-2 with four minutes left in the half. Four minutes into the second half, the Memphis Tigers brought an onslaught of passes that ended with Gonzalez scoring his second goal of the game. In the 58th minute, junior Matt Kerridge scored to tie the game up once again, this time at three goals apiece. Lipscomb duplicated the feat two minutes later with a second goal from Chavez, making the score...

Lipscomb soccer takes home Battle of the Boulevard trophy in overtime victory

The Battle of the Boulevard is routinely one of the biggest games of the year for all Lipscomb and Belmont sports teams. The heated rivalry often leads to physical, heated matches, and this incarnation was no different. In front of the home crowd, the Bisons earned a hard-fought victory in their first game of the season against the rival Bruins 3-2. Senior and captain Luke Gearin, recently voted the pre-season A-Sun Defensive player of the Year, put away the game-winning goal off of a penalty kick in the second half of overtime. Fellow senior and A-Sun pre-season Player of the Year Omar Djabi drew the foul that earned the penalty kick with three minutes to go in the second overtime period. The high-scoring affair began with a goal from junior forward Zach Tarbox fifteen minutes into the game, followed by a Belmont equalizer from sophomore forward AJ Arnold late in the first half. Belmont sophomore keeper Grayson Rector and Lipscomb sophomore keeper Micah Bledsoe made back-to-back key saves for their respective squads early in the second half. Ten minutes into the second half Lipscomb junior midfielder Josue Chavez rocketed a shot in from outside the box to give the Bisons a 2-1 lead. Senior Bruin midfielder Rashad Hyacenth fired in an impressive shot of his own halfway through the second half to tie the game at two apiece. photo courtesy of Lipscomb...

Men’s soccer splits games with UK and UAB

Men’s soccer split two games Saturday after playing the University of Kentucky and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In the earlier match against Kentucky, the Bisons fell short, but in the game against UAB the Bisons came away with a 4-2 victory. Sophomore fielder,Reece Holcombe, talked about the different style of play Kentucky used. “Kentucky likes to pass the ball more, they have European players so they like to pass the ball around,” Holcombe said. After a tough loss to the SEC team, the Bisons kept up their energy to get the win over UAB. “UAB is a more physical team, they are a historically bigger team and they like to be more direct,” Holcombe said, “It’s a school first, beating UAB. I think it’s a nice step in the direction that we are going. We’re getting better every year.” Sophomore midfielder, Josue Chavez, says the way they played against UAB made a difference in the outcome. “Both games were decent, Kentucky was harder to score against, but UAB, we were passing the ball better and giving ourselves more chances to score,” Chavez said. Even though the Bisons battled UAB later on in the day, Chavez spoke about how the overall energy of their game was elevated. “Our energy overall against UAB was better than Kentucky, when we were down we used our energy to pick us back up and come back and get the four goals,” Chavez said. The Bisons have been putting work in during the off-season, and it is paying off. “This spring has been tough but it really shows how much better we are getting,”...
