The 56th annual Singarama wrapped up Saturday evening, with the coveted Sweepstakes awarded to “The Wonder Years.” The Sweepstakes award represents a fourth win for “The Wonder Years” after consecutively winning all three other awards for Theme, Music and Staging. The winning group was comprised of the social clubs Phi Sigma, Theta Psi and Kappa Chi, as well as several “friends.” “The Wonder Years” tells the tale of “most responsible child” Andrew Foster, played by Dane Mortensen. After his parents leave for a “business trip,” Andrew’s “Glammy” whisks him and his two younger siblings away to a weekend biblical retreat. “It just means that even in times when there’s unknown and there’s wonder to be had in life, life can still be wonderful,” director Myron Sailors said on the meaning behind the show. “There’s no reason to stress about not knowing what’s coming next because that’s just part of life.” Months of preparation went into the mini-musical. Sailors spoke on how highly he valued the work put in by the production team and cast. “My production team that was right there with me through it all and my cast that was just so encouraging and worked so hard…Without them, none of this would have happened.” This year’s performances were hosted by Berkley Boglin, Luke Howard, Hudson Parker, Peytan Porter, Alexa Williams and Brittney Wood. Everyone loves a good underdog story, and Greek life members were lucky enough to witness one at the Greek Life Appreciation Ceremony. The ceremony for the 13 social clubs on campus was to honor the achievements of Greek life over the past school year and to crown this year’s boy and girl club of the year. “The event was to celebrate all the accomplishments in Greek life and all the work ICC and Sam Parnell have put into the Lipscomb Community,” Sam Smith, Dean of Student Life, said. “We wanted to celebrate the service, social events, relationships, and drug and alcohol awareness events social clubs have participated in this year.” The winner for the male social club of the year was Theta Psi, a fairly new club on campus, and the winner of the female club of the year was Kappa Chi. Kappa Chi seemed like the underdog of the competition, being one of the smallest clubs on campus, but the club insists this is the recognition they deserve. “The competition was stiff,” Melissa Pinhal, a Lipscomb senior and president of Kappa Chi, said. “”I feel for every girl in the club it’s a lot of validation. [As a smaller club], we don’t get recognized, so to get recognized is great and gives us a goal for next year.” Kappa Chi was the winner out of seven female social clubs, most of which are quadruple the size of it. “It’s unbelievable that our little club is doing such big things,” Kappa Chi senior Whitney North said. “It’s the highest honor us sisters could get, and it’s great that out of everyone...

Months of hard work will soon pay off for students involved in Lipscomb’s 52nd annual Singarama, which opens this Thursday in Collins Alumni Auditorium. This year’s Singarama production is Ready, Set, Go! featuring groups led by student directors Anne Claire Smith, Carolanne Deaton and John Alex Foster. This year’s hosts and hostesses are Delaney Brown, David Austin Lowery, Michael Oruma, Caitlin Phelps, Tyler Russell and McKenna Smith. Aaron Sain is the host and hostesses director. “Go” is the story of a window washer who wants to enter the world of business. It features songs such as “Status Quo” from High School Musical, “Mirrors” by Justin Timberlake and “You Can Go Your Own Way.” Clubs participating in “Go” include Delta Omega, Delta Sigma, Kappa Chi, Sigma Omega Sigma and Tau Phi. Delta Sigma member Laney Overton has especially enjoyed bonding with students from other social clubs. “Being in a social club you sometimes are confined to your social club, and Singarama’s a really great opportunity to branch out and meet new people from other clubs,” Overton said. Students have been working on their shows since January, often practicing five days each week. Frequent practices do not bother Singarama first-timer Tiffany Best, though. “Whenever I’m stressed or busy or upset I can just take my mind off of it and sing my heart out,” Best said. Anna Grace Wolfe of Delta Sigma has also enjoyed the practices but is especially enthusiastic about taking the stage at Singarama for the first time. “I’m excited to be on stage and the moment where we first walk onto the stage,” Wolfe said. Campus may have appeared eerily quiet on Wednesday night, but that’s because most the student body was inside Alumni Auditorium cheering on pledges at Bid Night. This semester’s Bid Night began differently than most — a Greek-wide devotional was held to kick off the evening. The devotional included a short prayer time before bids were given out to new members. “Pledge week is such a hard, stressful time,” said Lauren King, a member of Pi Delta. “I’m glad we could start it off thinking about what really matters at the end of the day.” The noise of pledges chanting and clubs cheering consumed the auditorium as new social club members were introduced. Every club had a different way of introducing itself and its new members to Greek life. Female clubs Delta Sigma and Pi Delta’s pledges sang songs, while Kappa Chi’s girls did their best strut. Male social club Delta Tau caused a ruckus with their insane skits, while Theta Psi awed with a miniature stomp routine. “Everyone always does the same boring things, so DT likes to add a little fun into the night with our skits,” said Tate Dalrymple, a member of Delta Tau. Now that the introduction is over, the eleven-day pledge week begins. “Pledging really is about growing close as a club,” said Carli Stump, president of Delta Sigma. “It all seems silly but all has a purpose in the end.” Greek life is expected to attend Lipscomb basketball games on Thursday and Saturday with their new pledges. For the second year in a row, Phi Sigma took home first place in the powderpuff football tournament after beating Pi Delta in the championship game. Phi Sigma athletic director Mallory Johnson was proud of her team’s effort. “We won last year, the first year of this tournament,” Johnson said, “I love to see the clubs having friendly competition, but we just wanted to come out and defend the title.” The teams played two rounds before being narrowed down to two teams for the championship. In the first round, Delta Sigma beat Kappa Chi, Phi Sigma beat Phi Nu and Delta Xi forfeited giving Delta Omega a win. Pi Delta beat Delta Omega and Phi Sigma beat Delta Sigma in the second round. Obviously the clubs wanted to win, but that was not the main goal for the tournament. “Of course I would have liked to win to go to the championship, but I just love seeing all the clubs out here enjoying the day together,” Delta Omega president Makenzie Kanyuh said, “Events like this put social clubs in a positive light.” After the first two rounds, a break took place where the clubs enjoyed food and drinks together. Music and other tailgate games were being played as well. The tournament also provided a time for the pledges to have a cheer-off during the games. “Social clubs rarely ever get to come together as one Greek community,” Kanyuh said. “It’s kind of funny powderpuff brought us together today, but the boys got a good laugh and the girls got to be a little competitive.
