Lipscomb’s campus experienced a whole new world this week. Sponsored by Lipscomb’s intercultural development department, the second annual Welcome to Our Worlds Week celebrated different cultures on campus. “This week is to encourage camaraderie amongst students and kind of get them out of their comfort zone,” said Mariah Lester, vice president of Kappa Iota Theta. KIT’s talent show kicked off the week showcasing performances from mimes to dancers. Tino Liu, a freshman who performed a Jason Mraz mashup, said that there was one thing that united all cultures during the week. “It’s really all about spreading love,” said Liu. “Everyone needs a little bit of love, so spread it.” WOW week also put a spotlight on flags from around the world outside the student center. Thursday afternoon food trucks lined the Allen Arena mall so that students could try food from different cultures. “It’s cool to see different kinds of food on campus,” sophomore Karli Whitson said. “It brings people out and about on campus.” The trucks brought in the community and broke up the normal food court options. “I am slightly overwhelmed with all the choices, but it’s exciting to have options,” senior Matt Brown said. “I was going to eat at Au Bon Pain, but then I saw food trucks, so that’s a nice change of pace.” Other activities for the week like live music, fashion and dancing allowed for unusual opportunities for students. “It [WOW week] helps students get engaged in the community and helps them learn about the different cultures at Lipscomb,” Lester...

Lipscomb students united in Shamblin Theater Monday night to kick off Black History Month. Marketing events coordinator, Carly Detzner, and President of Kappa Iota Theta, Melba Buchanan, put together this year’s black history month event, which began with a slide show of facts about famous African American people. The event was meant to be a fun event for students to come together and talk about black history month. Students enjoyed various forms of entertainment such as music, food and drinks. The focus for 2015 is around African American students at Lipscomb University and celebrating unity. “Celebrate unity and Martin Luther King Jr., that was his goal,” Detzner said. “He wanted us to be unified with everybody. He didn’t want to oppress the oppressors. He wanted to just be unified, so we are celebrating that unity that we have out here on Lipscomb’s Campus.” A short film was played in reference to Martin Luther King Jr. and his vision of unity and dream to change the world. After the film, students discussed it and related it to today’s society. Buchanan led the event offering questions for the students to discuss. Some of the questions included, “How the world would differ today if MLK did not exist?” Some students felt people would not have taken the same approach as MLK did with peaceful and non-violent protest. Buchanan also asked in what ways people can practice unity as Lipscomb students. Several answers from students were that they believed if they stop defining each other by the color of their skin that they can come together as one and be unified. The newest male social club at Lipscomb, Theta Psi, took home first place for the fifth annual Stomp Fest presented by Kappa Iota Theta. The Wolves, as Theta Psi is referred to by members and non-members alike, earned the judges respect after a stepping routine that caused an uproar of cheers from the crowd. Senior Jeru Jorguenson was the captain behind Theta Psi’s FBI-themed routine, and all of the members stated that he was a major reason they won first place. “Jeru Jorguenson was our coach. He’s been planning this [routine] for a long, long time, and it’s really exciting to see it pay off,” Theta Psi President Zach Bowen said, “For all of us, but especially for him and for the team. I’m so proud of them.” “This is probably one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had at Lipscomb, and words cannot describe how happy I am,” Jorguenson said. With the added pressures of coaching the team, this Stomp Fest experience was different than past ones for Jorguenson, and that made the win even sweeter. “I’ve always had fun at Stomp Fest, but having all of the stress and all that stuff pay off at the end of it is amazing.” Jorguenson said. Female social club Pi Delta took home second place on the night with a routine centered on storms. During the show’s intermission, youth club Alpha Omega stomped to a Christian-themed routine that brought the crowd to their feet. Intercultural club Kappa Iota Theta will be presenting Stomp Fest, with the theme “Evolve,” Nov. 20 at 9 p.m. This will be Stomp Fest’s fifth year on campus and the competition is already heating up, according to a member of Sigma Iota Delta, last year’s winner of Stomp Fest. “My favorite part of stomp is the competition,” said Drew Watson, a senior. “People get really into it and the rumors that get started about the groups are really funny.” The rumors Watson is referring to are about everything from a group’s theme to what music is being used. Besides friendly rivalries, the competition brings group members closer together. “It is a really good time to get closer with the group you are with,” said Kaela Pennington, a member of Phi Sigma. “It is smaller than Singarama, so everyone has to put in equal amounts of work for something great to come together. It is a side of Lipscomb that isn’t really showcased, and allows a different type of talent to come out.” The competition sets social clubs and other Lipscomb groups against one another to be judged on theme, step intricacy, music, and dance numbers. Each group only has ten minutes for their whole routine, which sometimes includes an introduction video. “It’s so much fun because we come up with our own themes, costumes, dances, chants, stomps, etc. and it really gives everyone an opportunity to contribute something,” said Virginia Jackson, a member of Phi Sigma. “For Singarama we are paired with other groups, and so Stomp Fest is the one time of year that we get to perform...

April Fool’s Day usually calls for a plethora of pranks and jokes. Lipscomb’s annual talent show, entitled Shenanigans, was no joke, though. Held in Shamblin Theatre on Tuesday evening, this free event showcased a variety of students’ talents, ranging from singer-songwriters to dancers. The event was hosted by Kappa Iota Theta and sponsored by SGA. President of Kappa Iota Theta and junior Mariah Lester served as the evening’s emcee. To Lester, the talent show is important to bring more community to Lipscomb. “We hope the talent will bring more of a student engagement for the whole student body,” Lester said. “It’s open to all students, all majors, anyone can participate, and anyone can come. “We open it up to the whole Lipscomb community to support and experience. It’s our job to showcase the students. This is our family. Look what they can do.” Before the show’s intermission, duo sophomore Cedric Duncan and sophomore Samantha Seifert performed the Rihanna and Mikky Ekko song “Stay.” “When I get on stage, all my nerves go away,” Duncan said.“Just like last year, it’s a lot of good competition this year.” The first and second place winners, who received a $100 and $50 prize respectively, were freshmen Rodra Allen, who sang a cover song, and Anna Bray, who performed an Irish dance. “I was super nervous; my hands were so shaky,” Allen said. “I was going to snap my fingers, but I couldn’t even do that.” Allen says she plans to put her prize to good use. “Me and my friends are going on a road trip, and before, I was kind of wondering...
