The Lipscomb Bisons Track and Field team saw many of the younger athletes succeed with personal records as well as in team records as they competed in their third indoor meet of the season at Tennessee State University. The Bisons saw success in both the field events as well as running events. Starting with the women’s team, several athletes set new personal records, and some broke even bigger records. Senior thrower April Terry, one of the Bisons’ leading throwers, broke the school record in the weight throw with a throw of 17.82m, and sophomore thrower Rachel Dixon set a PR in the shotput (10.01m). On the running side of the events, the Lady Bisons were at the top of many of the events with several of the younger athletes taking some of the glory. The Lady Bisons swept the mile. Madi Talbert took first with a time of 5:00.89, Barbara Lee Ball finished second at 5:01.05, and Sally Larson rounded out the top three running a time of 5:03.47. Freshman Kayla Montgomery won the 5k with a time of 18:02.39. Freshman Kacey Kemper won the 800 (2:16.06), and the team’s DMR team finished in first (13:10.94). When it came to the men’s events, it was the freshmen and sophomores that stood out as well. Sophomore Devon Wade won the pole vault with a jump of 4.10m, while freshman Grayson Webber took first in the weight throw (13.33m), and freshman Kade Hinkle set a personal record in the weight throw (11.35m). Happy New Year, Lumination readers! Now that the new year’s resolutions have been made and the first day of 2015 is here, we want to take a hop back in time to look at some of Lipscomb’s biggest moments of 2014. Before we get to the top 10 stories, we want to take a moment to honor those we lost in 2014. Alumni Andrew Nash, Anastasia Sloan, Meghan Day and Jacob Akers, and associate professor of pharmacy practice Kim Barker and longtime faculty member Earl Dennis all passed away. As we begin a new year, we would like to keep those listed and their families in our thoughts and prayers. Quite a few stories made it close to the top 10. They include a few annual events, special guests and people in new positions of leadership. In December, Amy Grant hosted the tenth annual Lighting of the Green in Allen Arena. This year, a scholarship was created in Grant’s honor. During the spring, the fifth annual Charlie Daniels’ Scholarship for Heroes concert brought country music stars and fundraising to Allen Arena once again. Also in 2014, the Dove Awards returned to Lipscomb for its 46th ceremony. In November, the Lipscomb community came together at one of Nashville’s premier venues: The Ryman. Nashville’s Charles Esten joined the program “Lipscomb: On a New Stage,” and even performed a few tunes, too. Also in 2014, Lipscomb welcomed Darrin Bellows as the new director of security and safety and Josh Roberts as the new dean of student development. Another year, another successful season for the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country programs. The Women scored 21 points in the Atlantic Sun Championships to secure their fourth consecutive conference title. Madi Talbert, Paige Stoner, and Dani Walker swept the top three spots, taking first, second and third respectively. All three runners, along with Sally Larson who finished sixth overall, earned spots on the A-Sun All-Conference First Team. Stoner was also named A-Sun Freshman of the Year. Barbara Lee Ball, Kayla Montgomery and Minna Fields took spots on the All-Conference Second Team. Ball and Montgomery finished ninth and 13th in the A-Sun Championship. The Men’s team also had a stand-out day in route to winning their second A-Sun Championship in a row. Juan Gonzalez, Daniel Gardner and Christian Freeman took third, fourth and fifth place in the competition. All three also placed on the A-Sun All-Conference First Team. The Bisons fourth and fifth runners, junior Jared Wingerter and sophomore Jared Daedler, both set personal records in route to finshing ninth and 15th overall. Wingerter earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team. “Jared Wingadner had a great race,” head coach Benton Reed said. “He passed two Northern Kentucky guys in the end with an awesome finish. I knew Jared Dadeler was going to have a good race because he just kept on moving up throughout the race and by the end he was where he needed to be and it really made the difference for the team. During Saturday’s meet, there was a 30 degrees difference in temperature from the Bisons’ last race at Vaughn’s Gap, the Belmont Opener. Two weeks ago, the men’s and women’s cross country teams were running out of clothing items to remove in the sweltering heat. Two weeks later at the Vanderbilt Classic, they were struggling to find enough to put on. At around 60 degrees, the brisk, overcast morning lengthened their warm-up some, but overall the temperature was welcomed by the participating athletes and fans alike. With nearly double the attendance from the Belmont Opener, Vaughn’s Gap was electric. “We’re thrilled with our women’s performance today. We finished 4th overall without our top three women out there, so, great performances,” head coach Bill Taylor said. Despite withholding Sally Larson, Danielle Walker and Madi Talbert from the competition the Lady Bisons showed that they still have a lot to bring to the table. The trio of runers will compete in Boston in two weeks and coach Taylor is hoping the girls will make a statement. “Maybe not visible to everybody because of not running our top three, but we’re really happy and we feel like it’s setting us up awesomely for the end of the season,” Taylor said. Lipscomb sophomore Barbara Ball finished with a time of 17:43.54. Ball, who is the current Atlantic Sun Runner of the Week, stepped up for the Lady Bisons in her teammates’ absence. “Today was great. For someone who has not even graduated high school yet, future Bison cross country and track and field athlete Kayla Montgomery has already gained more national media attention than many professional athletes will in over the span of an entire career. Montgomery is a senior at Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem, N.C who is currently competing in the high school national track championships in New York City alongside hundreds of the best high school track and field athletes from across the country. So what exactly sets her apart from her peers? Montgomery was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis three years ago. Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is a disease that disrupts the way the nervous system communicates with the rest of your body, resulting in numerous symptoms including loss of muscle control and numbness of certain body parts. Montgomery has had a successful running career in high school, despite MS causing her legs to go numb during all of her races to the point that she cannot stand on her own once she crosses the finish line. With her success came interest from colleges across the country, including Lipscomb. However, when other schools were hesitant to offer Montgomery a scholarship because of her disease, Lipscomb was more than willing to add her to the Bison team. “Some of it is that we recruit on character and we recruit on academics.
