Mistakes and overwhelming defensive pressure saw Lipscomb drop its second conference game in a row to the Jacksonville University Dolphins 73-64. Lipscomb was competitive early, tying the game at seven with six minutes to go in the quarter. Two minutes later, with Lipscomb only down one, a 9-0 run began for Jacksonville, putting the team up 20-10. The run, fueled by missed shots and good rebounding play off those missed shots, came to an end with a pair of free throws stemming from a technical foul called on Jacksonville’s freshman guard Da’nasia Shaw. Lipscomb went on a 6-0 scoring run early in the second quarter before having it wiped out by an identical run from the Dolphins who went on to extend their lead to 30-17. Junior forward Taylor Clark and sophomore guard Jane Deason helped close the gap slightly to 36-25 at the end of the half. Jacksonville’s defense was stifling in the first half. The Dolphins played a full-court trap defense that looked to be beatable initially by the Lady Bisons offense. The team would throw a series of quick passes to find the open player for a score. This was not the case as the game went on. The pressure proved difficult to overcome and forced Lipscomb into bad shots and other costly mistakes. One such mistake was turnovers. Lipscomb committed 14 of them in the half, which led to 12 points for the Dolphins. Also costly for the Lady Bisons was fouling. The Lady Bisons fought hard against the Skyhawks, but fell, losing 67-83 at the UT Martin Elam Center. The Lady Bisons shot well, 20-42, but just couldn’t seem to get into a rhythm during the game. The Skyhawk defense was tough and started pressing the second the Bisons got the ball. The game went back and forth at the beginning, with the Bisons gaining a lead over the Skyhawks with a second-quarter 11-2 run. But the Skyhawks quickly retook the lead 36-29. Lipscomb cut UT Martin’s lead to seven with five minutes to go, due to them shooting 71.4% in the fourth quarter. But the Skyhawks ended the game on a 15-6 run and walked away with a 83-67 win. Despite the loss, the Bisons shot 47.6% from the field overall, largely in part to the standout freshmen. The freshman trio of guards, Blythe Pearson, Jalyn Holcomb and Casey Collier, were responsible for almost 70% of the team’s points. Pearson dropped a career-high 20 points off the bench in her 24:51 minutes. Holcomb scored 16 points in her 38:31 minutes of playing time. Collier scored 9 points in her 34:29 minutes. However, even these standout performances were not enough to give the Bisons the win, due in part to the crowd of over 4,000 students from area schools that packed into the arena providing a unique energy that seemed to keep Martin fueled throughout the game. Carleigh Short hit a second-chance three with 12.8 seconds on the clock to tie the home-opener and clear the way for a home-debut victory for new women’s basketball coach Lauren Sumski. “She’s [Carleigh] been a big shot maker her entire career,” said Sumski, after the 71-69 victory over Northern Kentucky. “We knew we wanted to get her a look, this was a play we put in earlier that they executed really well so I was really excited for her to knock down that shot.” After Short’s game-tying three, redshirt-sophomore Dorie Harrison sunk a pair of free throws to win the game “We completely trusted Dorie,” said Carleigh Short. “We knew she was gonna hit both of them, so in our minds, we were just saying, ‘nothing long’ because we knew they couldn’t get a layup they had to throw it long and so Dorie stepped up big and got the win for us.” Northern Kentucky led for much of the first quarter, but Lipscomb responded with a second-quarter rally to take the lead into halftime. But in the third and fourth quarters the lead was back and forth changing 11 times during the game, and neither team could get separation until the final whistle. After losing to NJIT on Wednesday and clinching the No. 9 seed in the ASUN, the Lady Bisons fell to the North Alabama Lions on their senior night Saturday afternoon in Florence 71-50. Lipscomb did not have much to play for Saturday, as clinching the ninth seed eliminated the Lady Bisons from the ASUN tournament next week. So, as has been this season’s story for the Bisons (3-24, 1,14 ASUN), they could not maintain their first half intensity and let a three-point game at halftime become an almost 30 point game once in the fourth quarter. On the other hand, the Lions (19-6, 10-5 ASUN) had everything to play for as this game assured them one of the top four seeds in the ASUN and the opportunity to host at least one game in the tournament in their first season as a Division 1 school. The Lady Bisons improve to 4-6 on the season with their 72-53 win over Tennessee Tech. Ashley Southern led the team with 19 points and 11 rebounds marking her 25th career double double. Chandler Cooper had 12 points and senior Sara Bliss did as well, while Danay Fothergill finished with 10 points. Cooper was also 4-9 from the three point line. The Lady Bisons shot just over 40% from the field and 78.3% from the free throw line. The Golden Eagles trailed the entire game. Lipscomb led 26-21 at the half before scoring 46 points in the second half to secure the win. Saturday the Lady Bisons take on Xavier as they travel up to Cincinnati.
