Lumination Network took home a multitude of honors from the Tennessee Associated Press Broadcasters and Tennessee Associated Press Media Editors 2014 College Awards. The awards ceremony was held at the John Seigenthaler Center Saturday afternoon. Lumination contributor Michael Fox tied for first place in the Best Multi-media Journalist category for his work on the planned Green Hills high rise story. Fox, along with fellow Lumination contributor Kelly Dean, tied for first in the Best Multi-media Package category for the Green Hills high rise story. The same package won second in the Best Television News Story category for Dean and Fox. The Lumination staff took home second place in the Best Multi-media Package category for their coverage of the Dove Awards held on campus. Contributor Carly Bergthold won a first place award for Radio Best Use of Sound for a Lumination Radio package on Lipscomb’s production of the play Les Misérables. The same story won third place for Best Radio Feature Story. Multimedia Editor Sydney Poe won first place in the Best Television Feature Story category for her story on The Contributor’s financial troubles. “[I’m] very proud and happy for all of our winners,” said communications and journalism department chair Alan Griggs. “Our four first place awards are unprecedented.” Lumination News, Lumination’s weekly news broadcast, won third place for Best Newscast, an award accepted by News Director Jael Teme and Poe, the former News Director. Contributor Savanna Schubert won third place in the Best Television Reporter category for her work on covering the Lipscomb/Liberty logo controversy. Lipscomb’s Lady Bisons volleyball players know how important it is to have other students supporting their efforts, so they didn’t even hesitate when their coach asked them if they wanted to go to the Lipscomb production of Les Misérables this autumn. Coach Brandon Rosenthal took a vote a couple weeks in advance and asked his team who wanted to plan on attending the show. Every hand in the huddle shot up without hesitation. “As athletes, we don’t always realize the hard work that theatre requires. It is foreign to us,” said junior Megan Stout. “The show was really eye-opening to how much dedication it requires to put on a show like that.” The team took advantage of a rare evening off to attend the show as a team on Nov. 6. “This was my first time seeing a Lipscomb show,” said sophomore Molly Spitznagle. “I was mesmerized the whole time.” The team’s busy fall semester does not allow for much time to attend events like these. They were leaving the next day for a match against ETSU in Johnson City. “We know how important it is to have supporters at our games,” said senior captain Caitlin Dotson. “The fact that we can support our classmates in the same way is awesome.” Casey Edwards, a junior theatre major who played Éponine in the production, knows from experience how important it is for both groups of students to be supported. Her freshman year, she played golf for Lipscomb and was in multiple performances. Lipscomb University’s theater department is gearing up for their fall production of Les Misérables. The musical will be held Nov. 6 – 8 in Collins Alumni Auditorium and will feature a host of talented actors and singers. Among the actors is guest Broadway star Chuck Wagner. Wagner will be playing the lead role of Jean Valjean. The musical is co-directed by Mike Fernandez, the chair of Lipscomb’s Department of Theatre, as well as Off-Broadway director and choreographer Justin Boccitto.
