Hello Lipscomb! Happy summer! The past school year has been turbulent, to say the least. A global pandemic, social justice movements and a divisive presidential election left Lipscomb’s campus (and the world) entirely different compared to just a year ago. I want to introduce myself to the Lipscomb community in the hope of establishing trust in student media as well as encouraging engagement on our content and reporting. I’ve been involved with Lumination for nearly three years, in that time I’ve worked with incredible student journalists on the stories that have defined our campus community. I’ve witnessed first-hand the power in student protest, the vibrant energy of a Lipscomb Athletics game, and innovation in the face of difficult seasons. During this time, I’ve also been lucky enough to be involved in the staff of two of Lumination’s impactful editors. Mckenzi Harris and Erin Franklin are pillars of leadership, the groundwork they laid provides me with the resources to best represent the good in student journalism. A return to normalcy is on everyone’s mind right now. Yet at Lipscomb, that “new normal” will consist of a new presidential administration, a new student life vice president and COVID’s overall impact on how the university functions. In the coming school year, Lumination will seek to amplify community voices and stories amid these coming changes. We also hope to report on the excitement of returning concerts, festivals and movies. Well, that was fast. I know it’s cliché to comment on the swiftness of the summer months, but it’s hard to believe that the break is over and the fall semester already underway. To those of you who braved an 8 a.m. class this morning, you have my upmost respect. Even though life’s been pretty mellow around LU, it’s actually been quite an eventful summer on the news side of things. Lipscomb has hired a new men’s basketball coach with Casey Alexander, implemented new dining changes (including a new off-campus meal plan) and installed the new Osman Fountain in Bison Square. Other new campus renovations are currently getting their finishing touches. Lumination also made a few new additions to our staff before the summer months. Former Assistant News Director Sydney Poe will be taking over all of our multimedia coverage as the new News Director of the Lumination News broadcast and as the new Multimedia Editor. Jael Teme will be the new Assistant News Director for the broadcast. In regards to LU Radio, Thomas Jones, who you may know from his LU Radio show Sports60, will be the new Program Director for the station. On the written side of things, Kyrsten Turner will be our new News Editor and Social Media Manager, Janice Ng will be our new Special Interests Editor, Brianna Langley will be our new Lifestyles Editor, Aaron Schmelzer will be our new Sports Editor and Logan Butts will be our new Entertainment Editor. Well, folks, the spring semester is upon us. With the mentioning of spring comes the thoughts of newness. New flowers grow in the wake of winter’s barren landscape, heavy coats are tossed aside in favor of lighter apparel and the joys of pollen return to torture those of us with allergies. While we’ve got a ways to go until March weather, the spring semester takes on that idea in the world of academics and social surroundings. We here at Lumination are experiencing our own changes, so to speak. Since our beginning in 2010, the official student news service of Lipscomb University has seen new redesigns, new writers, new readers and of course, new editors. Ever since I got here in 2011 (well, technically I’ve been here since 1997 since I’m a lifer – fun fact!), I’ve had the chance to work with two different editors – two people with tremendous talent and vision. Hunter Patterson ran the site from the time I arrived at the university until May of last year, and Emily Snell was the editor from then until just a few weeks ago. Both individuals have helped make this website a cornerstone of the Lipscomb experience – a source of vital information for students whenever news needs to be shared. I was blessed to have the chance to learn from both of them on how to be a good editor. Now, I get the chance to put those lessons to work. Hello faculty, friends and fellow students of Lipscomb University. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Hunter Patterson, Lumination’s editor in chief. My staff and I are looking forward to a great year. Being at such a fine institution, we journalists have a lot of exciting stories to tell and events to chronicle. Whether it’s about one of our NCAA sports teams, professors publishing books or writing about one of our countless students who are impacting the world, we consider ourselves grateful. Like many of you, I am excited that school has started back. Also, I am excited that my peers have accepted me as editor of this news site that is truly for students and by students. It is our goal to make Lumination the place to visit when you want to know something about campus. Soon, we will have a calendar of events that you will be able to reference to know the dates of anything and everything that is happening on campus. We have also partnered with Lipscomb In Motion and the athletics department to keep you, the students, in the know. You know, informing you about the important stuff; chapel credits, t-shirts and most importantly, free food. I’d also like to thank you for visiting the site.
