On her first day as Lipscomb University’s 18th president, Dr. Candice McQueen made several announcements during Tuesday’s Gathering. After introductions from SGA President Grant Hitchcock and her daughter, freshman Abigail McQueen, Dr. McQueen made her entrance on the podium. McQueen, greeted by a warm round of applause from the audience, cited the students as the primary reason for accepting this leadership position. “Lipscomb University exists for students,” said McQueen. “And we will empower our community, our administrators to make sure students are job one, and we will live out the visions of our founders to help you, our students, to be equipped to fully integrate with your academic passions and careers. McQueen made a few special announcements, such as the start of the President’s Student Advisory Council, otherwise known as PSAC. PSAC will allow McQueen to directly hear feedback from students through a collaborative effort with the SGA. Nominations for council members are ongoing, with the council set to be announced toward the end of September. To make up for the sophomore class’ lost opportunities, McQueen revealed that next week will be sophomore week. At the start of the week, sophomores will receive a gift package filled with an assortment of treats as well as tickets to events that lead up to an exclusive silent disco party. McQueen addressed and confirmed that the recent dining staff shortages and restaurant closures were due to a COVID outbreak. To make up for the inconvenience, students were treated to a cookout of hamburgers and hot dogs as an appreciation for their patience and willingness to cooperate with the staff shortages. Newly elected SGA executive president Grant Hitchcock says he is looking forward to the challenges of working with new campus administration and also promises to “listen” to others’ concerns as he plans to put his campaign platform to work. Hitchcock, elected in a runoff April 6, is a bioscience and philosophy major, Lipscomb RA and SGA’s new executive president. “I’m really excited about the transition, honestly,” said Hitchcock. The upcoming school year will look different on campus, with the anticipation of new administrations. This past semester, Lipscomb has seen the stepping down of President Randolph Lowry and Vice President of Student Life Al Sturgeon. “I’m just looking forward to being able to represent students in this period of transition, with a new president and the new structure that is going to be laid out for SGA,” said Hitchcock. Hitchcock also will be bringing along goals of his own, Expanding library hours and increasing opportunities for community defined his campaign platform. “I want to hear the concerns that people have, the ideas that people have, and I want those ideas to hopefully come to fruition through this office,” said Hitchcock. “We’re hoping to create a welcoming environment, and to promote SGA to that aspect as well.” In the upcoming school year, Hitchcock will be bringing with him experience from both his time as a campus RA as well as from the past year serving on SGA. “As an RA on call for 24/7, anytime that anybody needs me, I’m there to help react and be there for them.” “That’s what I want to do with this office,” said Hitchcock. Have you been missing the movies lately? Well good news, there’s going to be a drive-in this Friday (October 16th) at Woodmont Hills Church. With Regal just announcing the closing of all their in-person theatres until further notice, this event couldn’t come at a better time. There are five different options for what movie will show on Friday. The choices are “Knives Out”, “Little Women”, “Zootopia”, “Jumanji: The Next Level”, and “Ratatouille”. Students can find the Google Form to vote for their favorite on the weekly email from the Office of Student Life. The chosen movie will be announced either this Wednesday or Thursday. There’s only room for the first 100 cars, so be sure to get there early. The lot opens at 7:30 pm and the movie begins at 8 pm. Bring your student ID with you in order to get a spot. To get to Woodmont Hills Church just turn right onto Woodmont Blvd, drive a little over a mile, and then turn right onto US-31. You’ll see the church on the left after you turn. Forty students ran for 27 open office positions on next year’s Student Government Association (SGA). Because of the COVID-19 pandemic that closed campus, this year’s elections were held via e-mail. Five additional senator positions representing the freshman class will be filled when the new students arrive to Lipscomb in the fall. Below is a list of the SGA office position winners. Election season has once again made its way to Lipscomb’s campus; however, this year campaigning is being done in an electronic format. SGA is hosting their elections for the 2020-2021 school year Tuesday, April 14; polling will be conducted via email for the offices of president, vice president, secretary and treasurer as well as tenators. “I really wish I could be with you guys in person,” said Mimi Vance in her campaign video to students. Vance is running uncontested for the office of SGA president. “If I’m elected my top priority and number one goal will be to listen to you guys,” Vance said in her video directed towards students. “I think SGA can do a lot better on being transparent with our student body, to me that looks like using social media a lot better…using our blog and website better…as well as thorough recaps of all our meetings to be posted.” One commitment Vance is aiming towards is creating open-door office hours to encourage transparency, which has become a popular issue among SGA candidates. “The vice president must communicate clearly, keep discussions open and clear and be a leader on campus for those whose voices need to be represented.” Says vice president candidate Will Huff. The running for vice president is high contested this year. Alongside Huff, the candidates are Nate Messer, Patrick Smith, and Dexter Woods.
